I am from Austria and I would say you are partly right. Before 2014, I felt comfortable and safe as an openly gay man. The majority supported LGBTQ+ individuals, but it was primarily the ÖVP who always voted against equality. However, the progress regarding protection laws and same-sex marriage are really important and they came after Conchita‘s win. I remember many right-wing minded people got upset and they went very silent after conchita won the contest.
Conchita taught me without knowing it, how I was limiting myself, through my internalized homophobia etc. I would have never been exposed to your amazing voice, your incredible songs and you. Just a beautiful soul, wonderful humour. Where I felt uncomfortable about your beard and unusual appearance, I'm so grateful that your music inspired me to know about you. What I discovered is a person much younger than who inspired me to write this, hopefully you read this someday. I'm so happy to see young people like you, as you're actions will create such an amazing change. I'm also very sad that I was never privileged enough to have someone like you to understand I've been hiding, for decades. You chose life, while I was scared. You are incredible
