    I think part of what made "Schindler's List" work so well is that Spielberg felt absolutely humbled by the source material. He tried repeatedly to pass off the project to other directors, and when he resolved to do it himself, he refused to put any of his signature directorial flourishes on it. John Williams also initially refused to score the film, believing he wasn't a worthy composer, but relented when Spielberg reasoned that all the better choices were dead. When you go into a film with the idea that you are merely serving the material, it has the chance to really speak for itself.

    • @Koldeman
      @Koldeman Před rokem +41

      True. Even during the shoot, one day was so emotionally wrenching that he asked Richard Attenborough (who he just directed as John Hammond in JP) to fly over & finish the shoot. Although he certainly has the directing chops to do it, Richard understood this was an endeavor that Spielberg had to see to completion. There's also some anecdotes about how Spielberg would call Robin Williams to cheer him up after extremely rigorous moments during the filming. Spielberg has VERY good friends.

I love Spielberg - he’s one of my favorite directors. But to be fair, he had a lot of help from other producers & directors with several of these films & some came with controversy, like Munich & Amistad - where they were criticized for historical accuracy & misleading characterizations. Sometimes, it’s not a bad thing to take a little more time, especially when making an important historical film. 😊

Reason why I wanted to become a paleontologist, but ultimately made me want to become an actor. Also makes me appreciate life more and nature. The message is so powerful EVEN being “overshadowed” by the sheer amazingness of the CGI and everything

    As I understand it, Spielberg later helped George Lucas storyboard some of the action scenes for Revenge of the Sith, like the Grievous Wheel Bike chase. So he repaid the favor 12 years later.

    Say what you will about Schindler’s list but that movie is an extraordinary achievement. Black and white. Hand held camera work. A tight, disciplined script. It will be a film that will stand the test of time.

    If I’m not mistaken, Spielberg was also approving Animaniacs storyboards and scripts on the set of Schindler’s List. If directing one movie wasn’t a multi-tasking feat in itself…

    Steven Spielberg has used no other special effects company but Industrial Light And Magic which at the time was ran by George Lucas. I can see how George was coinvent to be asked. He was probably looking over a lot of the project himself in the first place.

      Also referred to as ADR or looping, it's when you go back to the recording studio and rerecord dialogue. On set, dialogue may not come out sounding right or even intelligible given other sounds like wind machines, "rain", or pyrotechnics so in the controlled environment of the studio they can record the dialogue to match but this time getting a clean copy of it.

    I have a theory about Spielberg that I would love to ask him about. Spielberg famously pushed the boundaries for acceptable violence in mainstream films in Jaws and the Raiders films, and I think subconsciously the reason he did so is that he thought Americans needed to confront the true extent of the violence of WWII in Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan. Those films would have been too graphic even for an R rated film had he made them in the 70s. So even though he was heavily criticized at the time for the violence in his “popcorn” films they actually served a noble purpose in the long run.
