  • The extraction of Africa's abundant resources has been secretly controlled to a select few “old money” families - such as the Oppenheimers - often hidden in plain sight.
Indeed, they have dominated the global diamond industry in an era of unparalleled dominance - controlling an astonishing 85% to 90% of rough diamond distribution for over 100 years - not only in Africa, but worldwide.

Chapter 1: The Wealth of the Modern Oppenheimers
Chapter 2: An Oppenheimer Patriarch Is Born
Chapter 3: Ernest Takes Over The World’s Diamond Market
Chapter 4: The Life and Times of Harry Oppenheimer
Chapter 5: The Legacy and Controversies of the Oppenheimer Dynasty
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
In this video, we dive into the remarkable story of the Oppenheimer family, a dynasty whose influence has extended far beyond the shores of Africa, shaping the global diamond industry and beyond.
We begin with an exploration of Africa's rich natural resources and the complex socio-economic challenges it faces, setting the stage for a tale of economic prowess and strategic influence.
We also on the Oppenheimer family's dominance in the diamond industry, tracing their journey from the late 19th century to the present.
We highlight the family's ability to amass vast wealth and influence, surviving through historical upheavals such as two World Wars and the digital revolution, and avoiding controversy in the blood diamond scandal.
We profile key family members, starting with Nicholas F. Oppenheimer, who has significantly expanded his wealth in recent years.
His diverse investment portfolio, spanning continents and industries, is explored in detail. Nicky’s ventures, ranging from private equity investments to his involvement in the healthcare sector, illustrate the breadth of his business acumen.
We then delve into the origins of the Oppenheimer dynasty, tracing back to Ernest Oppenheimer, the patriarch who established the family's initial foothold in the diamond industry.
Ernest's rise from a young diamond buyer to a prominent business and political figure in South Africa is chronicled, showcasing his strategic mind and entrepreneurial spirit.
We also shed light on the next generation of Oppenheimers, focusing on Harry Oppenheimer's contributions to both the business world and politics.
His revolutionary marketing strategies transformed the diamond industry, and his political influence is examined, particularly in the context of apartheid-era South Africa.
We then shift to the controversies and ethical issues surrounding the diamond industry, particularly the accusations of monopolistic practices and the impact of cultural references like the film "Blood Diamond" and Kanye West's song "Diamonds From Sierra Leone."
These cultural phenomena brought increased scrutiny to the ethical and environmental implications of diamond mining.
The story culminates with the Oppenheimer family's strategic decision in 2012 to sell their stake in De Beers, marking the end of their direct involvement in the diamond industry but not their influence in global business.
We explore their subsequent investments in diverse sectors, highlighting their continued economic impact in Africa and beyond.

    FUN FACT
Oppenheimer’s 60 000 hectare Ranch is the biggest in Zimbabwe. He’s so powerful that even when Mugabe took land from white farmers, Oppenheimer’s Ranch was left untouched. Carries 7500 - 10 000 Cattle at any time. Exports to England and USA. Oppenheimer spends his time there sometimes with his dogs. He flies his beef out from Shangani to Cape Town for personal consumption. It’s a very serious Ranching operation they’re running down there. Ohh also. There’s a rich coal seam running through part of his ranch. He has been in and out of court fighting this off. Wonder if he’ll mine it himself later

I respect this channel but with all due respect there's a way the West sees Africa which I feel is wrong, very very wrong. Africa isn't a country, the way the West portrays Africa as if it's one country with one people with the same culture.
The Oppenheimers in this reference don't control Africa, please and please get your facts right. Africa has 54 countries are you trying to say this family controls 54 countries? What you can say is, how this family controls mining in certain countries in Africa. That's a better headline, than saying the entire Africa. I feel it's highly disrespectful to we as Africans, I don't know what others think, but that's how I feel.
It's very unfair when you lump Africa together as if it's a country with one people, NO! It's a very large continent with more than 1 billion people, with a land mass only second to Asia.
It's like I'm to say because ambani's reliance group is a big company in India, I should then say, how his company controls Asia. That you're big in a country or a certain part of a continent doesn't mean you dominate the entire continent.
    Please take to correction.

As far as I know they moved their headquarters out of SA to London due to uncertainty of the new SA Marxist governments intention to nationalise all minerals , and as such they take all the diamonds and profits to London. Since then they have contributed to bleeding SAs economy while the ANC has stolen the rest. De Beers also is the only private company to write laws in its favour criminalizing citizens for possessing uncut diamonds on their own land. The sentence for illicit diamond buying and selling is up to 21 years in prison. The minerals belong to the nation , not to the corporation. Land law abrogates admiralty law. Unfortunately the criminal admiralty law, not valid on land, has been permitted to cannibalize our country, while making us all debtors to it and resulting in abject poverty.

An admirable and glowing account of economic prowess, however, many South Africans view these as "ill-gotten gains" propelled by the 1913 Land Act that disenfranchised South African indigenous people of 87% of their land (all the arable and mineral rich land) and handed it over to European settlers like the Oppenheimers. Following that, the 1948 Apartheid Laws further entrenched a system of the subjugation of the African people, legislating the enrichment of white, European settlers. Africans were excluded from any form of formal enterprise. That is how the Oppenheimers and others in that time got to be wealthy. Hardly just economic prowess. They were the early beneficiaries of a political and economic system that favoured them and essentially gave them a monopoly. They are also notorious for political interference in the countries in which the operate. Don't get me wrong, they have clearly done very well for themselves but we should remember the whole story.

@@gedsimpson9854you know very well that you are lying.Throughout history, various African civilizations and societies were well aware of the existence and value of these minerals. For instance, gold has been mined in Africa for thousands of years, and ancient African kingdoms such as the Kingdom of Ghana, the Kingdom of Mali, and the Kingdom of Zimbabwe were renowned for their gold production and trade.
Diamonds were also known and utilized in African societies. The region that is now modern-day Zimbabwe, for example, was home to extensive diamond mining and trade networks long before European colonization.
It is important to recognize that Africa is a vast and diverse continent with rich cultural, technological, and economic histories. Different African societies had varying levels of knowledge and expertise in mineral extraction, processing, and trade. Many indigenous African communities had developed sophisticated mining techniques, tools, and knowledge of mineral deposits.
Unfortunately, during the era of European colonization, the extraction of these resources often occurred under exploitative and oppressive conditions, with local communities being dispossessed of their lands and resources. This history of colonization and exploitation has sometimes contributed to misconceptions and stereotypes about the knowledge and capacities of African societies.

My husband, DeBeers and Maurice Templesman were asked by the producers to consult on the Blood Diamond film. All refused, therefore the film has many errors. He was actually given the Diamond mine featured in film as thanks for his economic support, however it was too dangerous to own, so he returned it.
Fancy color diamonds are a side line for us, we only market those with a Kimberly certificate.
The Oppenheimer family does not control modern Africa.

During Mining Apartheid era, you will find there were townships surrounded all corners by army bases namely Soweto (SOuth WEstern TOwn). This Township borders the main reef mines. So one can argue that it was a concentration camp.
So those towns were built woth very low coat homes, no trees planted because helicopters could conduct aerial security. Curfews were in olace and whike we can blame the apartheid government, the fact is that it was large mining corporations who ultimately controled the labour they required. Mineral resources were controled by Anglo orporation and NOT the government.
Apartheid was a business decioson, not a political one. Anyone who argues othwrwise are shifting blame and ignoring the fundamental reason.
Cecil Rhodes was the giy who implemented segregation, long before Present Verwoerd. In fact Verwoed wanted to nationalize tye mineral resources but he met his end.
During Cecil Rhoses era, the Boer War happened because of mining control.
Recently during new government, the diamonds are not poliahed in SA, BUT Isreal. So the country's top resource you leaves the land and you have to womder why?
So why is the ANC allowing it, is the real question? Knowing thwir entite freedom fight was purely based on nationalising mines. Unfortunately their principles have been lost in avarice and division.

It’s all about race and white Europeans took as they pleased and they’re still the majority and in power: North and South America, Australia and New Zealand and also what they call Israel!

The Oppenheimer's seem to have a very special bloodline (there's so much talent throughout the history of the Oppenheimer's) Including great Inventions.

(However, during the Medieval period the Witt's emerge as a noble family with great influence, having many distinguished branches in Northern Germany and become recognized for their participation in social, economic, and political affairs).
