    LATEST UPDATE!!!
Hello, friends of Madison Mountaineering! Courtenay here with a very exciting post-summit dispatch. As you probably heard from Garrett yesterday, all of our climbers and our amazing Sherpa team summited Everest (8848m/29,032ft) at 8:00 AM on Thursday, May 23rd - a day none of us will soon forget!
After basking in the warmth of our accomplishments and our -40 degree sleeping bags in Camp 4 (7900m/25,919ft) on Thursday night, it was time to head down the mountain. As my childhood idol and friend of Madison Mountaineering Ed Viesturs famously says, “Getting to the top is optional, getting down is mandatory.” Well, we have used his directive and have made it safely down to Camp 2 (6500m/21,325ft) losing over 4,000 feet of elevation in just a few hours.
I’m currently dispatching from the comfort of our heated Camp 2 dining tent - a luxury after four days of freeze-dried meals up high on the mountain! We are all certainly eager to be reunited with our base camp (5364m/17,598ft) friends and the amenities tomorrow. Thank you for following along with our many expeditions this season. We’ve got just one more dispatch to go!

I've just checked the Madison Mountaineering website (Ryan is climbing Everest with them) and the team have spent a second day resting at Camp 2 which is a change to the plan. The reason for this is they have put their summit attempt back by a day due to a change in the weather forecast. An extra day at Camp 2 will help them with acclimatization. They now hope to summit on May 23. So tomorrow morning they will be setting off for Camp 3.

Just seen a report that the entire Madison Mountaineering team have all summited successfully. Hope they all get down safe now and can’t wait for the videos!!
    Copied from the MM website:
Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the Madison Mountaineering Mount Everest (8848m/29,032ft) expedition climb. Today is May 23rd and I’m happy to report that we all summited Mount Everest, 100 percent success and all safely back in Camp 4 (7900m/25,919ft)! That’s four climber/clients, myself as the guide/expedition leader, plus our stellar Sherpa team! We’ll put out that name list shortly, but all in all there was about 15 of us on the summit of Everest this morning.
We had a great day, a beautiful sunrise up on the Southeast Ridge! Not too many climbers on the route. It was very uncrowded, so we enjoyed the climb and the summit! We were all up there together to celebrate and savor the moment on top, and then of course made our way safely back down to Camp 4 by about midday here on May 23rd. Everyone’s just resting, rehydrating, eating some noodles and other food, and looking forward to a good night’s rest here on oxygen, then we’ll head down to Camp 2 (6500m/21,325ft) tomorrow!
All is well here! (I’m) really proud of our team. Great job to everyone! (We’re) looking forward to getting down to Camp 2 tomorrow and we’ll check in then. Thank you!

Guessing your going back up for a summit push in just less than a week. Listen to your Sherpa, never ignore or go against their advice after leaving the South Col. On the summit day (you will be leaving the night before) make sure you hold what is important to you and how important you are to your family. Your blogs are super chilled but to inject a bit of reality be prepared to choose to live rather than top out and not make it back, go through this scenario in your head prior. Not summiting Everest on your first attempt is not a failure, dying is. If you feel utterly ruined at the South Summit and know your reserves are gone and nearly spent, head down rather than wait it out for the step, there is always another year. It becomes much harder above 26,000 on any mountain and despite being in a team, should the worst happen say above the south summit with exhaustion your chances of getting back are pretty remote. Also if your struggling to get fluids in at the South Col and keep them (other end ) then again don't go up. Remember every down suit in the snow once was a highly motivated, highly fit and sometimes highly capable mountaineer with decades of experience. Depending on weather, luck and how you are on the day the mountain will always be there, especially for one so young. Wishing you blue sky's and the very best of luck for next week. PS Use handgel sanitizer after touching the money and esp prior to eating if your heading to say Gorakshep etc (bad stomach on top of alitude bad stomach is a real shit and you'll miss the window completely). Edit - PS Good to see the new rules in effect with the waste dumps.

      Excellent advice!!
Yes, Dave, Ryan was coached by experienced mountaineer Alan Arnette for many months prior to this climb, and I suspect that Alan most likely told him these things.
But I love it when someone with lots of mountaineering experience chimes in here.
It makes my day when I read comments like yours!!
And to anyone out there who reads this, Alan Arnette has a fascinating CZcams channel of his own, and he has weekly updates about the activities on Everest and other mountains, which are really good.
I first heard about Ryan in a interview on Alan's channel a few months ago. Highly recommended video for anyone out there who has not seen it!

@@Amanwithoutaface112 Yea likely to set out agreed and push for the balcony but if they make that in sh*t state and time and part of a large well respected expedition then the guide will likely turn them around here when changing bottles if really well behind, unless they have been suffering from some ox issue and it can be attributed to that, or even say they might have paid for supplemental say 4-5 liters flow and been on standard 3 or whatever, makes a big difference. There are bad guides, but these are generally routed out and well the competiion for the top teams (and prices) is tough so they generally will be found out in short order. They also have seen it all before, so are better places to assess your time and general ability to make a judgement call higher up the mountain knowing you might get past the south east ridge slabs and even summit, but that is only half the journey. I'd say there are quite a few climbers up there that had they turned back at the South Summit would be able to read this today. You'd be very foolish to go against a good guide and their advice, unless you are an accomplished mountaineer yourself and have alot of high altitude experience and knew exactly how your body can perform, but its important to note you may have done a route before, then not able or vice versa, the wonders of the human body. The reality is you tend to make less rational decisions the higher up you go, sleep deprived, in pain, low ox, struggling to get calories in, struggling to get fluids in or retain, it all add's up which is why people often need a voice of reason/sanity.

      @_Mountain_Dave Před 19 dny +4

@@nancyhanson3472 Yea he will know the score on guides too etc and companies and sure will have passed on the beta of the route and what to expect. One thing i would add if he read's this is carry spare energy gels compared to whatever you think you may need and have electrolytes. Literally can be life saving. Ensure your well hydrated on leaving the col. Also pace yourself, case of tortoise and hare at high altitude.

I think you just make those noises as a stress relief. I would be swearing left and right if I had to casually step over a gaping chasm, lol. Here’s to good weather and a strong will, my friend. Your dog misses you, too, I know it.

Ryan Mitchell, climbing with Madison Mountaineering and one of my Summit Coach clients, gave an update on behalf of his team: By the way, Ryan is doing a very well-done video log on CZcams that is generating many followers.
Hey, everybody! It’s day 36 of the Madison Mountaineering Mount Everest (8848m/29,032ft) expedition.
We’re all feeling good here! It turns out that our initial summit day of May 22nd isn’t looking that good. The weatherman said that we should wait until the 23rd. Therefore, we decided to wait in Camp 2 (6500m/21,325ft) for one more day. So, that’s giving us a little bit more acclimatization time. We’re going to be stronger, ready to move up to Camp 3 (7230m/23,720ft) tomorrow morning - a nice alpine, 6:00 AM start. Not really “alpine,” but it’ll be nice.
Other than that, we’re all prepared, we’re getting those macros in. Better to be at Camp 2 rather than up higher waiting. It turns out a lot of teams actually turned back, so we made the right decision and we’re ready to go!
I’d like to shout out my dog, Harley! He’s technically my mom’s dog, but we all know that he likes me more! Sorry mom… That’s all! Oh, this is Ryan by the way.
Update: Maddison arrived at Camp 3 on Monday night, May 20, Nepal time. Also, Furtenbach’s Nepal team is at the Col, but it took them nine hours to climb from Camp 3. It should have taken under four, so the route must be jammed.

I went to both the Madison Mountaineering website and their instagram. I think that Madison Mountaineering has one team climbing both Everest and Lohtse together and the owner, Garrett Madison is on that team and they have summitted Everest. Ryan's team is doing Everest only, and they have gone back to the village of Namche to rest and will make their way back up with their summit bid scheduled for next Wednesday, if the weather cooperates. (It takes 12 hours to walk to Namche, one way).
Makes it kind of confusing when Madison Mountaineering has two separate teams in the area at the same time.
And Ryan has not shown any videos with Garrett Madison in them, so he is also climbing there, but not with Ryan.
