Everest Base Camp: FAIL

  • It has been one year since we were stopped, 3kms short of Everest Base Camp. As we start planning a return trip to Himalayas, and decide what other hikes we want to include on this next adventure, we couldn’t help but reminisce on our first trip to Nepal and all the things that made us fall in love with the country and the people. It still hurts to watch the video back, and be reminded of just how close we were to Everest Base Camp, before being told no one could go any further. Whether you watched our daily vlogs on the trek last year, are new to the channel and haven’t seen any yet, or just want to watch the highlights again put together into one video, check out this video and find out why we failed to make it to Everest Base Camp.

    This is no failure! Making it to the top of Kala Patthar is quite the accomplishment, over 18,000 feet!! And actually much harder than the relatively flat trek from Gorekshep to EBC. The views from there are certainly much better. Scenery and effort-wise you didn't miss anything, only in not checking some artificial box...

      Thank you!! It’s been so great to hear from yourself and so many others on this. It was an amazing experience, and you are totally right. We will go back, and hopefully check the artificial box (which is 100% what it is), and hopefully since it will be just us and a guide will get to spend some time interacting with those that will be summiting, more than we would have on this trip. There is always a positive!! Thanks for your comment!! :)

    Fantastic!!! THIS is the Everest video I’ve always wanted to see!!! ❤ I really enjoyed seeing the incredibly beautiful scenery, colorful towns, smiling local people & unique animals, displays of faith & culture, and especially the restaurants & food, as well as the sleeping accommodations!! Your commentary was entertaining and informative, your guide was engaging and knowledgeable, the bridges and narrow paths looked very daunting, and the whole trek was fabulous. Thank you SO much!!

    Idiotic planning from the agency. In a case like this group should be able to split up, those not feeling well should go down slowly, fit ones go and do the planned trek with an assistant guide.
    Go with private porter-guide next time and adjust your itinerary as you go.
    Another thing: coming up via Tengboche is not the best route choice, as there is a much superior high trail on the opposite side of the valley via Phortse. Guides are too lazy to suggest this amazing High Scenic Trail. Only come down via Tengboche, makes no sense to hike the same low trail twice.
    If it is of any consolation you did not really miss a lot after all. Best views you get from "Kala Pattar" anyway. Been there 5 times since 1985.

You will arrive at Mong La high ridge with several lodges, best viewpoint in Khumbu! Go down to Phortse Thenga (bridge) where you turn right and cross the river and climb to Phortse village. Stay overnight there. Next day take the High Scenic trail from the North-East corner of the village to Pangpoche (about 3 hours), have lunch and continue to Dingpoche in the afternoon. Takes 2 days just like the Tengboche route, few hours more walking, though, but the days are relatively short on the way up.

    Just watching your video as I’m headed to base camp in October. Sorry that you didn’t get to the stones/sign BUT on your point on missing out on talking to Everest climbers - the base camp you go to as an EBC trekker is not the actual base camp where the Everest climbers are hanging I’ve been told. I don’t know anyone who trekked EBC who got to interact with Everest climbers. If that makes you feel better! Unless you guys were getting some special arrangement.
    Ps. Did you do the whole trek in leggings? I was planning on wearing thermals and hiking pants to double layer as I was even a bit cold in that on Kilimanjaro and in Patagonia. Well done guys and thanks for the footage

    • @ZachandDanielle
      @ZachandDanielle  Před 19 dny

      Thanks for the comment!! Yes, I did the whole trek in leggings (and lots of layers on top). I think there was one day where I put an extra pant layer on top of my leggings. It was cold, but once you’re moving it’s not too bad as long as you have lots of top layers. I had warm socks too :)
      We did it in May though, so I’m not sure if October would be more cold?!
      We had been hoping since it was May and that’s around the time the climbers push for the summit that we’d get to interact with some! I think next time we go Kami, our amazing guide, he might be able to work that out for us, but you’re right…with a group it doesn’t seem like you’d be able to, typically.
      Have an amazing time on your trip, it’s going to be soooo great!! 😊

    Great video you two. Just think of those who pay up to USD$65,000 to climb to the top, and many have to cancel with less than 100 mts vertical to go, after staying there for two months and those are the lucky ones if you take into consideration the ones that never go back to their loved ones and remain buried on the mountain. The reward vs risk assesment for this trek was almost infinite given all you guys were able to experience at different levels, and I believe, you only shared a small percentage of it. Now getting into the 60's, but planning to accomplish the trek just like the two of you. Congratulations and great job !

    Nice accomplishment either way, and you’re basically there so congrats. Hiking here in a different B.C. (British Columbia 😅) stuff like this has so often happened to me and ppl I was with on hiking trips, road trips etc, where something out of the blue came up to foil our plans.
    I felt so bad knowing you could have gotten to your goal after pushing yourselves for such a long trip. After watching pretty much every harrowing Everest documentary & video on CZcams, I know that Sherpa’s know best! But in your case just going to B.C. I thought they could have been more lenient knowing that you were fit, responsible and so on. I would’ve pushed them a bit more and offered them a tip to let me go and meet them back at such & such a time, but every situation is different.

    • @ZachandDanielle
      @ZachandDanielle  Před 21 dnem +1

      The diarrhea only affected Danielle, she had to take some antibiotics to get rid of it. It is very common, it could have been from anything - we aren’t 100% sure where it was from. Since most people will get it at some point while trekking it’s advised to bring some antibiotics that treat the common bugs they have there.

      We went with a group from Canada, and the leader of that group (Sherpa Encounters) works closely with amazing Sherpas and porters. He was the one that made the call for the group to not go. We don’t think that’s a typical thing - usually the group would be split, but we think due to his health at the time, some of those in the group, and the length of the hike that day he just called it off. In hindsight would he have done the same thing if we could go back in time? I’m not sure…. But we will go back again and book directly with Kami, our Sherpa - he can set everything up and then you don’t have to go with a group either.

    It was good to know that you can made it to EBC physically and mentally eventhough some events prevented you to go. You will know what to expect for your 2nd attempt. Suggest you to change other sherpa though because your current sherpa didn't plan your journey well. Strong hikers must never scarifying their destination for the weak hikers. It was so unfair to you.

      We will know what to expect next time for sure!! It wasn’t our Sherpa who planned it, it was a guide….when we go back again we will definitely use Kami again, but it will just be him, Zach and I, and whatever porter (if needed).

    This is piss more planning by the company. All this should have been factored as a what if.

      There were so many people feeling unwell, that despite us feeling okay, that’s why the decision was made, unfortunately. The group leader was concerned about the health of some of the people that wanted to go to on to Base Camp if the groups were split, along with some of the Sherpa’s health as it would have been a long day for them too. It was unfortunate, but we were a team and in the end it gives us another reason to go back!! Kami (the singing Sherpa we hiked with mostly) is amazing and we are planning a trip back with him where since it will just be him, Zach and I, we can spend more time at Base Camp than we would have on that trip - maybe have tea with the climbers and get to talk to other sherpas and groups more. That’s what we would have wanted then, but likely wouldn’t have got at that time. So, it all works out. :)

    I really enjoyed your video. But please don’t use the word “retarded” when describing a beautiful spot. It is a word that causes distress to people who actually have mental disabilities. There are many words you can use to substitute. I hope you will take this as constructive criticism. You offered lots of great detail that I haven’t seen in other Everest videos. I also subscribed.

      Thank you, and you’re right. We didn’t mean anything by it, but you are right 100%.

    Who cares about base camp? Having scaled 4 peaks is way more rewarding!
