Zink technology was developed in building W-4 on Polaroid's Waltham, Massachusetts campus - I was a security guard there. Most of the buildings on the campus were empty as Polaroid was largely defunct by then. (Zink later became a spin-out of the company and relocated elsewhere). I remember patrolling (walking) through Zink's labs late at night marveling at this new ink-in-the-paper technology. Large colorful photographs were everywhere - on lab tables, walls, etc - they were photographs taken through microscopes of exploded Zink color crystals. Each color crystal (or are they capsules?) releases it's color at a specific temperature. The photos were used to evaluate the progress they were making. I even saw printer prototypes with large heat activated print heads...building W-4 still stands today on a hill overlooking the former campus. Most of the rest of the buildings have been bulldozed and the campus is now a shopping plaza. What was once the administrative building is now a store and office building for Clark's shoes.
Thanks for the interesting comment!
Interesting . Thank you Ed :)
Clark's is a local company to where I live. I had no idea that they were such a large, international brand.
Zink moved to Whitsett, NC - a huge plant that used to be owned by Konica. I think it was a film or paper coating facility for Konica at the time. Zink is a very interesting technology. I hope they continue to develop the technology to make larger printers and paper.
Fascinating slice of history! Thanks for sharing.
I've never been impressed with the print quality of these either, but it's fun to mess around with for an afternoon. Digging the new outro as well!
I planned to give this Polaroid camera to my 7 year old nephew because he loves using my Fuji Instax instant camera (reviewed in an earlier video) ...I was in two minds because I thought it might be a bit complicated, but then the locking-up issue kiboshed that plan. He'll be getting the Fuji instead.
Lazy Game Reviews hi ive been watching you since 2015
That Sharp turntable closing was timed perfectly with the beat.
We got all the big guys in this thread!
All troubles aside, for the price I think this is a great gift for a kid you're trying to get interested in photography. There's something magical about getting a physical copy of the picture you just took. Even more so for this new 'all digital' generation coming up now.
I got a Zink printer a while back to see how good it was. The images I printed out with it back then are still looking perfectly good. It's quite pleasing if you hold a soldering iron or heat gun to a bit of the zinc paper as it suddenly changes through all the colours. It must be incredibly precise to be able to do that consistently.
I have this camera and I take it everywhere! I feel like we’re so spoiled with the high-tech shots that phones, dslrs and whatnot take now that we expect every camera this generation to produce the same quality. This is a camera that shoots, edits and prints instantly, AND saves copies of photos in digital format. I’m pretty happy with that!

How good do I recommend it
Do you find it disturbing that the screen is so reflecting?
Eww no i want my 24 megapixel dual camera, auto stabilizing lens waaaah
Does it have a monochrome mode?
Love the New Closing sequence. Keep up the excellent reviews
Agreed. Lots of cool gadgets.
Thanks for another fun video Techmoan!
Hey, Techmoan, I just wanted to appreciate the fact that you review this kind of products in such a deep and comprenhensive manner, even though they may seem like dull things for teenage girls, there is always something special in the analogic-real life photography and actually having to store the photos as the precious memories they hold. Your videos exceed in quality, you never stop to amaze me with new and interesting gadgets.
Thank you, you make our lifes a little more "analogic".
As always, enjoyed your in-depth review of the camera. New outro was great, found myself wanting to watch the video clips instead of the names though. Your video footage is just so mesmerizing to watch :-)
I was trying to be excited for the camera, but in the end I just waited for the new outro, which is awesome! :)
It appears that turning hdr off makes people disappear.
"Would you like to turn HDR (Human Direct Realism) off?" Yes because i'm antisocial!
The HDR (Human Disintegrator Ray) is almost worth the price of the camera.
I have a camera which takes multiple pictures in dark scenes and combines them to brighten them up instead of using a flash (it has none).
When I took it to the zoo almost all animals in the cave area disappeared from the photos.
Florek would you like to turn off human display recreation
@@ronin181990 Holy shit you're thanos
This is such a coincidence I was looking at these on the duty free during a flight last week and nearly took the plunge. Then I found there was a lack of reviews of these so thanks for the review!
That is the best outro I have ever seen. The music couldn't fit better, bravo.
Loving the new outro, overtime (the song) works really really well with that montage! as always keep up the great work
It almost feels like we're taking a step back from the original Polaroid cameras.. maybe the technology needed a little more nurture... and that video is truly terrible... it makes you long for a fixed lens.
Hey, you're here too!
Technology advancements really have made companies decide to go the route of cheaper easier solutions then actually putting modern technology to the use it could be put into. shame tbh
nostalgia nerd i love your channel and i think Polaroid just don't have the funds to produce anything substantial, they are a bit cheepo, they are always selling TVs in asda. great idea though about printable paper on the go just doesnt turn out as expected, nobody wants physical copies anymore just a thousand photos of random crap because memory is cheaper....
this is simply because of the chinese cheapos who bought the polaroid brand name.. now they manifacture the worst smartphones and their warranty is worthless.
IMHO the camera quality is not even on-par with one of those "regular" smartphone cameras. It seems that my old OnePlus One makes better photos and videos compared to that Polaroid camera.
Even my old Samsung compact-camera I bought 3 years ago for 160€ makes better photos and video. It surely makes no print-outs but well... you pay for the Polaroid name here.
But hey, mobile digital cameras are completely new thing to the technology world ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ A half-decent lens, better sensor and good AF wont cost that much extra... the tech is there.
Really good review. Might I say, one of the best reviews I've ever seen. Objective, relevant information. Thank you!
I'm glad I watched this before I spent my gift cards on this. Thanks for the great in depth look!
Another great job. Your videos just keep getting better and better.
Tbh I liked the picture quality, the ones outside have a theme to them
My son is 6 years old n he watches your clips everyday. Then pulls appliances apart with permission. Thank you for teaching him new things
Nice little camera to have for fun summer days and I like the new outro.
that skull and crossbones bunny is interesting
yeah, seems like designers played to much undertale
Do R/C! too*
Really enjoyed the video. Lovely closing credits!
I love the new Patron-Outro-Screen!
Thanks for the video!
I love your new end credits. Very slick... Great review as usual.🙂
I enjoyed that review Techmoan. Especially that you included the firmware update and continuing bugs. Often overlooked. I also think the new outro will serve you well :)
Keep it up Techmoan! you're my fav youtuber by a mile. Cheers!
The prints are a bit naff and the picture quality isn't amazing but I actually like this and it appeals to me a lot more than the older style instant-print cameras. Maybe they can release a firmware upgrade to fix the forever-hunting auto focus on videos.
Loving the new outro, it makes me wish I could subscribe twice.
The new outro is great! Very enjoyable video!
Great review! And loving the new outro!
Hey I am turning seventeen and interested in old technology how they work and thanks to 8-Bit Guy showing me your channel.I honestly loved it and now subscribed to you.Thank you and keep up the good work :)
Cheers from U.S.A
If I'm being honest, I've always loved your videos, your presentation, even the puppet skits you have at the end of a lot of them. The *only* thing I would always skip was the outro... and it's nice to see you have a much better one now! Keep doing what you do, fellow technologically inclined mind.
I just bought this camera off of Amazon. thank you for making this video it's is very helpful. now I'll know the pros and cons of the camera.
I like the new credits video at the end, It really tells a lot about your channel.
That new outro is great. Good job!
loving the new credit sequence. I watched right to the end!
The outro is miles more professional and well polished, keep up the good work
Very thorough and informative, why I enjoy your channel so much.
I cannot express how much I prefer that outro to your old one.
But the magic of Polaroids is that the pictures don't look amazing so it looks personal and old
Totally. Digital killed Polaroid once already and Polaroid came back as a retro thing. Why is Polaroid trying to kill itself again with its own product?
Thats the reason why im saving up for one.
@@ModMINI but its not Polaroid. Its Polaroid originals. A totally different company. A Dutch company that bought the license to the Polaroid name and IPs to use on various products. Polaroid corporation (the famous company) is largely defunct.
The new credits are LIT great work
love the new end sequence well done
Another excellent review. Very objective! I love the review out in Liverpool docks! Brilliant! Well done Mat !
Excellent review and I love the new end titles.
That new outro was beautiful!
Great video as always.. and love the new Outro.
Loving your new outro.
Enjoyed your latest review too.
Cheers.
I was really interested to see how this product performed in real world scenarios and your video showcases everything I needed to know. Not a bad product but, it's definitely not the best. Excellent review.
I absolutely LOVE the new outro. It now makes me actually want to see their names.
Mr. Techmoan, you perfectly walk the line between being accessable to your audience, and not directly interacting with the horrible nightmare people that permiate the entirety of CZcams comments. Cheers!
Really nice video. Thanks for the high quality once again. Cheers
Love your outro, all the cool stuff
Loving the new Outro!
That outro is incredible!
i love your videos, Ive been watching them for a few years now, have to say your credits where like something from a real tv show, i almost forgot i was on youtube, isnt it amazing that now days we can do this sort of thing. btw i still remember noels house party way back when. haha,
Techmoan: your fav youtubers fav youtuber.
Nice outro! Had to watch it a few times so that I could fully appreciate the clips in the background, and then read all of the names as well in case there were any clever ones (of which there are several.)
love your show sir and the 8 bit guy, jeep them coming sir.
It always makes me chuckle when you clarify that the UK actually has stores recognizable to the US. I'm certain have stores that aren't recognizable in America, but still.
I loved your review. It was informative and hilarious at the same time👍
I really dont like that uncovered SD card slot
Keyser Soze thats what i was thinking
You'll be OK. The silicon cover on my Cannon A60 2003 camera rotted and fell off, but the slots are still functioning OK
Solution: tape lol

lol.
If this was $50, it wouldn't be so bad but at $150 plus the cost of paper, it's not worth it.
Those are pounds, that's basically $200 USD but yeah if it were closer to $99 it'd be nice to have just it as a portable printer.
Tom5tom Entertainment and it's also going to be at least 200 EUR because of that "being European" tax :/
Tom5tom Entertainment That's a pretty fair statement
esp when you consider the fuji instax camera is around $60-70, granted it isnt digital but you still get the instant photo novelty
Tom5tom Entertainment Yeah, I wanted the screenless one before I seen this one but I didn't really like the quality of the printed photos but the only reason why I think this one is ok because it takes photos, videos, prints them out from either the camera or your phone. So with or without paper, you can still use it. I have one from the 80s & hasn't been touched since last fall. Film is too expensive. 8 shots for 23$. So in comparison of others, this is somewhat better. I do wish it was cheaper though. :)
love the review, thanks Techmoan
As a 30+ man who is tired of being spoken to as if I were 5 years old and despise the way most people comment on CZcams these days, I really appreciate your content. It makes me feel like there's still hope for passion, creativity and heart :)
Thank you!
I was really surprised to see that this was actually a modern product, what an interesting market choice. This video was very informative, though I doubt I'll be considering this camera.
Have a nice day.
Thank you for all your great videos :-) Always a pleasure to watch.
The grey BG in the picture of the soft toy at 12:55 is due to the camera's auto exposure trying to meter the BG to come out mid-tone grey. All light meters do this. Ideally the compensation for this should be made at the time of exposure using the EV controls (if the camera has them!). A black BG would'nt come out black - it too would come out a bit pasty!
As always, a great review!
Another fantastic video! Great outro as well.
As for the camera, I feel the Fujifilm instax is a much better deal - more spontaneous, simpler and it's real film.
Like the new outtro! Sounds like the Sound FX from Six Million Dollar Man at the end !
Brilliant. I was thinking about picking one of these up, but now I might wait.
Very useful demo and review, thanks!
What a cool new outro! :)
I hate long outros, but lets watch it 3rd times :D
Agree with others...great new outro! The sounds at the very end reminded me of the "Six Million Dollar Man" intro.
The credits/end was awesome!
those little beepy noises right at the end... i love hearing little blips like that. i really appreciated how the original ghost in the shell movie included such noises in the "POV" shots. the CPU-whine type stuff. (even though it actually annoys me when i get those over headphone jacks... which were a big part of why i switched to macs back in the day. nowadays though onboard audio on PCs has all these separation and shielding things going on, and thankfully seems to just be a thing of the past.)
Loving the outro!
The new outro is quite a trip down memory lane for regular TechMoan viewers!
Came for the Poochy amiibo, left pretty satisfied with the camera review.
Love the new outro!
Great review as always !!!
I do fancy the analog noises of your reel to reel at the end, it makes it less digital/perfect more human in a way.
Wonderfully detailed review, thank you.
Thanks Mat! Keep up the good work.
Love the new outro too!!!!
new outro is awesome
Poochy is so cute!!
The stand alone mobile printer seems like a better buy, the same fun of printing our your photos on the go but not locked to the crappy camera part.
Excellent review ! Thanks for sharing!!
I believe this to be one of the best produced and most well edited channels on YT.

I love your end credit mate
awesome video as always!!
Great review Matt. I think it's very much a case of "horses for courses". It would make an excellent present for a teenager or younger. It's a fun way of getting into photography. Cheers.
Outro is a keeper.
Love the new outtro
Love the new outro.
Lazy Game Reviews + Techmoan +The 8bit Guy = AMAZINGNESS.
I really like the new Patron credits
Great review! Cool little camera although I would never buy it because of the bad picture quality.
Really like the new outro!
Great new outro! May I suggest you consider using for the end card the oscilloscope footage you were using as a transition? The reel-to-reel intro is a classic, but it's already at the beginning of the video, and I think that oscilloscope footage is really cool-looking. Just a suggestion, of course!
Love the outro - by the way !
