HOW TO: VW Oval bug brake drum hack

In an attempt to circumvent buying a new brake drum, I go about modifying a newer style brake drum to work on a 1957 oval window Volkswagen Bug. The excitement never ends!

Put a gland nut washer behind drum

I assume it was a drum from a different year? Or were the axles / trans changed at some point? Nice MacGyver work!

After the hullabaloo trying to figure it out myself… I believe there was one later drum - but on original backing plates. That drum worked (maybe it had been modified in the past, idk). The drum that started this mess was original and it fit, but the splines were all messed up from the axle but being loose.

I honestly never considered that! I swept everything up and it’s rained since then… maybe I got lucky!
Wish I could say the same about the oil spots 😄
