Being 21 and going on my own to start a business and building a clientele was really scary. And now that I’m 23 I can look back and see how hard it’s been and how much it’s improved over the past two years. But hearing you talk about making mistakes and really finding your trade really spoke to me. I really enjoyed this video because it’s shows I’m not alone and every one starts somewhere. People are so bad at looking around at other successful trainers and saying “well I’ll never be that good” but they never realize that at some point those trainers were in the same spot you are in now. So thank you. Great video!
Love from the US! I only just recently started taking riding lessons again. I was very involved with riding when I was younger but my parents couldn't afford to pay for shows and all that goes with it. I stopped riding for a long time because most of the barns where I live only invested in the riders that would compete. I finally found a barn that is willing to train me without pushing shows down my throat and I LOVE IT! And at 26yrs old, I'm actually pretty good, I'm picking it up a lot faster than I thought I would and have been receiving a lot of compliments from other riders at the barn. Now, I'm hooked. I want to learn everything! Horsemanship, riding, barn management, anything that I can get my hands on and make a career out of it (I can't to the desk job life). This video was so inspirational! For someone who isn't afraid of hard work, it's nice to know that even if that's what it takes, if you're determined, you'll get there. Subscribed!!

I have just stumbled upon your channel and you are brilliant! I was a professional groom for many years and hearing your story just made me smile. I moved all across the country working for everyone from eventers to stunt riding yards retiring last year due to a bad back but feel I have literally seen everything and every type of person. Most horse channels seems to be kids who have it handed to them or riders playing at being a 'professional' but you sound like an utter grafter! Will watch your future videos from behind a desk with jealousy and a smile!
I'm sure you could write a very interesting book!

Great video, thanks for taking the time to make this! I can totally relate, I did a few years of working with horses in England, Ireland and here in New Zealand. It's bloody hard work, and I think we made 2 pounds an hour in England - people taking advantage of you is totally relatable! You're doing great, horses are hard work and the emotional highs and lows are insane but love your attitude and keep on fighting. I'll keep watching your vlogs!
"I got to ride all the naughty ponies because I didn't fall off much" in the other video I watched "when I was younger I fell off a horse that shook I fell off. Don't judge I'm ok 26 and it still gets me" 😂😂 me every day with my loan ponie that is semi retired 😂😂

I have no doubt in my mind you will go as far as you want to go. You have the same fire I had, you have the business set up and the goals you want to reach, you will get there, you have the talent and worth. Believe in yourself, no one else will do that for you, thats your job, to know how good you are, to know what you are worth to others, and tt know how good you are. I am trying to teach my daughter this at the moment, but due to hit 15 she's just not seeing it. She was never given the chance to work with horses like I was, sadly my situation now because of my health doesn't allow for the cost, if we had the money she would certainly have the chance, and i hope one day maybe she will, go for it Miri if you want to aim for the stars, I'm pretty sure you'll hit the moon!

BRILLIANT! Yes I mean you..It is rare for me to be impressed by young people these days, never mind finding a rider I respect. I always tell young women who work for me that twenty eight is the age of self realization. When you find, who you are is who you wanted to be. As you gain this understanding of your self; you discover not only self worth- you recognize and accept all faults and frailties. Then, you can progress without the fear and frustration of making the same mistakes over and over. Success then comes much easier and more often. You, Miss M, are well near to a Somebody. Job well done, on to the next...Horse! How great is that? AMAZING ! no thing greater
So grateful for you sharing this, I live in Essex and have worked on multiple yards and agree with the way you’re treated and always being made to feel not good enough. Sadly I didn’t pursue the work side and chose to keep horses as my hobby because of this, it’s a tough industry that’s for sure. Well done you for persevering!

Such a real view on owning and working with horses, and I am so glad you talk about how it is not all romantic and fun, and how important having a trade in the equine world is! I feel you on everything you've said about getting taken advantage of but it always leading to more knowledge and more experience. Im excited to watch more videos and fully relate!!
'I think I was a bit exploited'/'I learned very early that you don't trust people in the horse industry' - everyone who works in the industry when looking back on their early experiences. (Don't get me wrong; I had some amazing working pupilships; but it depends so much on the employer).
(ETA: also the excitement about having a 'proper job' with an actual contract)

i am meant to have a new horse arriving on friday but my yard owner cancelled the whole thing yesterday because of a small miscommunication. most people would not have responded the way she did and now everyone involved is very confused about what is going on
The fact that she said paid in experiencd is enough kind of got me. Most of the helping you get to do is mostly mug out or groom a horse. Usually you dont get to ride and you dont get cheaper lessons either. The horse world is definitely filled with exploited workes, because so many girl will do anything to be arround a huge yard... or small yard.
Luckily most professionals i know actually hire people to do the mugging and grooming for a somewhat good pay, then they usually get a stable along in the pay.
But man, i would hope young girls start respectjng themselves and dont mug out for free and being exploited. Do you get to ride a horse a few times a week if you mug out, the go for it. But if you only get to groom and mug out, maybe go for a tiny walk, then i would not think it was worth it.
Magic Books yeah it’s a really common thing, the ‘you should be grateful to have the opportunity to even be here’ sense that many employers can give. I’ve worked with so many young girls (17-20) who work like stink and are content to forget about themselves entirely, but so many seen to think that the only ‘in’ to the industry is working 70+ hour weeks for a pittance and feeling grateful that they’re even been given that. Even if they have several years worth of experience and a good degree of knowledge. And it has nothing to do with the ‘level’ of the yard, either; two of the worst examples that I’ve come across were well-respected 4* eventers and yet the manner in which they treated their young employees was hideous.
@@eleanoraaacr3372 it's absolutely horrible. But sadly as long as someone is willing to do it, they continue to do it. It really shouldn't be different from other field of working, but it just is. People just say suck it up, you get experience in a yard. Like, no. If I wanted to do it, I 100% had to be paid, because honestly it's sucky work. Some people may like being a groom and mug out. But like I want to ride, it just so happens that grooming and mugging out is part of it. But I don't find it fun. It's a chore for me, and that might sound harsh, but its not like it's the funniest thing to do for me. I like riding way better.
There should definitely be some rules on this subject.
It's like all the girls who likes doing makeup and working with it, they get paid so crappy because at the end off they day there are 1000 of other girls willing to do the job for no work. To much supply and not enough demand sadly.
I love your honest and unassuming mindset. You are a great role model for those wishing to get into the horse business.

Really loved hearing about your back story Miri! Thanks for sharing. What young girl hasn't been taken advantage of by a school - promises of free riding time!?? Ha - more like free labor & little if any, time to ride. I was often given the tougher horses too, because I didn't fall off & had quiet, gentle hands. I think my seat really came from riding bareback. Your journey sounds much like a Dr. in training in the US, crazy hours, loooow pay, etc. Glad to hear that you're learning your worth, you've earned it. 😊🐴❤
Really enjoying your videos! I definitely did not have your resilience when working with people who don't make you feel great in the horse industry. I live in Lexington Kentucky, and had quite a few negative experiences at some farms here. Sadly, it really soured me and for the past 6 years I wanted nothing to do with horses. Recently I have been missing it so much, and to be honest stumbling across your videos has brought me such joy. Hearing how you think and feel about horses reminds me that there are good people out there, I just haven't found the right farm yet. I hope to continue to slowly ease back into having horses in my life again, just have to be a bit more careful this time! Thank you so much for your honesty and genuine love for the sport. First horse i rode in lessons was a 16.2hh ottb named enterprise. I mucked for lessons and then tacked for lessons. I loved that horse. Lessons from 14.5-16yo wish they were longer. Barn closed and i was out of a job.

Absolutely hate selling horses. It makes buying a horse problematic because I am never selling a horse again. It means that I am under pressure to buy the right horse. Doable but not fun. This was a very interesting video.
Omg I only just realised nearly 13 minutes in that this was mo's foal 😭😭😭 but I am a believer in things happen for a reason and that reason was so Mo could save another beautiful soul.

Ran out of videos to watch so came back to yours as knew there were lots I haven't seen. Including this one... you are truly dedicated and amazingly strong! Quick question... how to pay for life... like food/horses/living early on when you said how you did loads unpaid... and did you go to school?
One other thing that I find hard is that artwork is ALWAYS considered supposedly cheap. I currently get about £3.40 per hr lol... I made a tough choice a month ago that no, I need to make it worth more. It may not be my "work" because I cant actually work but its income i really need... so when I reopen my books the prices are higher, still only giving me an average of £5.40 ph but my gwar is so many youngsters do it for stupidly cheap and with digital art its soooooo much faster and they charge less etc... so basically just now praying I get clients when I reopen with the new price otherwise I'll have to drop again. But yeah, its tough to value myself at all, I mean I don't at all but I'm going on what people have told me to do, because I can't trust my judgement of myself. Very hard though and so nervous to reopen at the end of November 🤞🏼

Hi, I know this might sound totally strange. What if you cut Kenko's tail a bit shorter, so its not so low. I watched your previous video on Kenko and from the beginning when I saw her trip, the first thing I thought was that her tail is so long. Just a crazy idea.

i ride horses that have had problems. I believe now I'm helping with breaking a thoroughbred stallion. I rode him and touched him for the first time. this ride was only his second ride.
