I have a panic disorder and if there's one thing I've learned from the whole ~experience~ (which is horrible btw do not recommend) is to always stick it out, engage, and never let your panic prevent you from living your life this is a very very hard thing to do though and it took me a loooong while to figure out how to not just run away from everything every time I got panicky so bravo Dodie YOU ARE SO STRONG AND BRAVE GIRL keep going and never give up ❤️

i went thru marijuana withdrawal recently which induced a fair few panic attacks, but because of that i learned this trick early on. i was genuinely scared i gave myself panic disorder, but that thought ironically can actually do that. this advice is the only advice that actually works!! forcing yourself to calm down makes it worse because it makes the panic attack seem bigger than it is.

Dodie, you are so incredibly brave for sharing these things. Thank you so much for doing this and normalizing panic attacks (though they are still very serious, they aren't shameful or weird.) it's really great to hear that other people have them and that the things that happen in your panic attacks are the same as what happen in mine. It makes me feel valid and good.
I would certainly encourage you to do this again if you get the chance. You should actively try to do it again if you can. That would prove to yourself that after you've done something scary once, it's far less scary the second time, if not perfectly fine. If you do that with enough things, maybe you'd nearly "cure" yourself of panic attacks forever! It would be really interesting to see.
I had/have a horrible fear of doctors and hospitals and medical settings, especially being nude or being touched. Then without any therapy or proper mental preparation (actually just 9 months of panicking on and off and crying my eyes out about it) I actually gave birth to a baby in a hospital and was fine. Like actually fine. I did not have a panic attack. Which I still cannot believe. I want another kid someday and I'm really interested to know if I'd do even better next time, or about the same. To be honest I can't imagine what it would be like. But I know I always imagine it's worse than it really is.
Anyway! Thanks again for making videos like these!!! Please keep uploading them! I want to hear all of your raw and real deepest darkest feelings and thoughts!!!! (If that isn't creepy... if it is I am soooo sorry.)

I've hated the dark since a traumatic year 5 camping trip with a laser pointer ahah my friends thought it was fun to pull a prank on lil 9 year old me. They told me if the laser went in my face I would be blinded ahhh how terrible I thought. We were in a shack with no lights, and with no torches it was pitch black. So they put the laser near ma face and then -bam- all torches off no light oh dear. I thought I was blind I was like flailing round crashing into walls wailing, lol, till late at night (like 10 but hush). Then, a mum came in - and woah it was like the gates to heaven so much sight flooded my eyes. It was ''sooooo funny'' to everyone else but it was quite a scarring experience if I do say so myself.

I've only experienced a darkness that dark once (that I recall). My grade went on an outing to the Cradle of Humankind and we walked into depths of the caves and it was so dark that I *literally* could not see my hand in front of my face and everything around me was *literally* pitch black. I had maybe the exact opposite reaction as you did though - I thought it was insanely cool and I wanted to stay there for as long as I possibly could because I thought it was so calming. I have anxiety too but mine's more of a social anxiety disorder so maybe that explains the differences in our reactions? idk idk, great video dodie, it was really interesting hearing your thoughts 💛💛💛

Know/remember film cameras? My 'work experience' way back in 1988 was spending a couple of weeks with a company that processed peoples' film rolls into photos for them. Part of that had me just sitting in one of the *DARK* rooms they used for getting the film out of the housing it's in whilst in a camera and onto a roll drum with lots of other rolls for further processing. I was just sitting whilst someone with experience was doing the actual work.
Given the film was still light-sensitive and undeveloped at this stage that room was *D*A*R*K*. Kind of felt like the darkness was pressing in on my eyeballs.
I also have vague memories of some cave where the lights got turned out. It is indeed a little freaky to be "looking around" but seeing no difference, including when waving your hand in front of your face.

There is a place near where i live, where you go into a pitch black room with the sticks that blind people have and experience different situations like a blind person. In one part you are in a boat, in another you are riding the tram and you pass through a park and its very interesting cause all the people helping you through the course are actually blind and at the end you get to ask them some questions. Me as a very shy person normally somehow just became social butterfly because i couldnt see at all and i was really surprised because i could easily talk to people i was intimidated by before. it was a really cool experience.

It's honestly so freaking awesome and inspiring to hear you talking about your mental health issues without perpetuating them - which can be half the battle sometimes. It's important to work on keeping a more healthy relationship with ones illnesses. Remembering that the illness is not who you are, but it is still a part of you and your growth as a person.

I had a panic attack at my school camp this year, and I've never been one to think I was scared of the dark and I don't even know if I am, but I was in my cabin and I couldn't keep myself from crying. I've shared a room with my little sister for the past 6 years of my life, and she's scared of the dark so ever since she was 3 and we started sharing the room we have a little night light to help her. So I guess being so used to this little light has just become so normal, and in the cabin, it was so dark and my brain just started panicking because I felt like I couldn't distinguish the difference between reality and the thoughts in my head. It was one AM and quiet, everyone fell asleep but my brain made it out to feel like this room was the loudest place I have ever been to. I don't even know how to describe it, its like inaudible words in my brain became louder and louder until it felt like it was screaming. I felt so small, so I went outside to breathe. A duck came near me ( honestly it wasn't even that close, it was a few meters away) and I must have been hella emotional because I poured my heart out. To a duck. I was all like 'thank you for being here, you make everything feel real again and you're so precious I love you'... But then the camp nightguard came to do his check up on the cabins to find me crying to a duck and made me walk in a straight line because he thought I was drinking and that's why I was so emotional. Oops, I guess? I went back to my cabin, and I ended up calming down because it started raining and I found it so much more relaxing. Camp was wild this year

You've got this! I have life threatening chronic illness and disabilities and am pretty much always watching Dodie's lovely videos from my hospital room she really does help me. Just breathe remember H.O.P.E hold on pain ends and it'll be over in two seconds. It's really not even the needle itself I think it's people just overly freaking out about it that is the biggest part. It helps if someone scratches your hand or maybe gently pinches your hand to divert your attention(Being chronically ill my entire life eventually I had no choice but to just get used to constant surgeries poking prodding etc. I have basically like a permanent IV called a central line that's surgically tunneled into my chest and goes straight to my heart since I can't eat and rely on IV nutrition called TPN and it definitely took some getting used to but I did and if I can get used to permanent tubes and lines and hospitals I pinky promise you can get through a few quick injections I believe in you! 💖💪🏻🌼🙏🏻

i've felt this disassociating panic since i was 10 or 11 years old. exactly how you described except it doesn't go away and i flee or almost pass out. i haven't been to a movie theatre or anywhere very dark since it started and lately it's becoming more frequent and less environment specific. you help me start searching online for answers and helped me realize i had anxiety and that this feeling that everyone told me i was crazy for was disassociating and probably derealization. so thank you for always talking so openly and unashamedly about your mental health and experiences babe. all the love

i remember one night as a child, there was a tornado watch so my family slept in the basement. my sister and i slept in this little area under the stairs. there was a little light attached to the wall that you push down on to turn on. i remember waking up and seeing just pitch darkness and not knowing if my eyes were open (as weird as that sounds lol) and i thought i might've been dreaming. it freaked me out a bit. the "opening your eyes made no difference" part made me think of this

The thing you mentioned about having a panic attack while being stuck on a ride or having an injection at the dentist was such a relief to hear someone had experienced something similar because I thought I had been going crazy when it happened! I had to get a referral the other day to get laughing gas because they couldn't give me a needle to freeze my mouth for a filling because I had a panic attack. The doctors were super rude to me about it but it's their loss I guess because I'm never going there again lol

about a month ago i went on vacation to florida and we had to stay the night at a house id never been in before and the thing with me is that every time i sleep i have some sort of light on like i have fairy lights in my room and when i'm not home i like to have the curtains of whatever room i'm sleeping in open. but with the house we stayed in, the curtains didn't open, and it was so dark that i had the literal exact same reaction, i was panicking so so badly because i was holding my hand right in front of my eyes but i couldn't see it and blinking hard and seeing no difference. it's the most panicked i have been in a long while and i had almost forgotten about it but this reminded me. i'm sorry that you had to feel that same panic, dodie

saw the title and thought you were gonna sing a panic song in the dark,,, anyway, i had an experience like this recently. not in a dark restaurant but i had done this sort of zip line obstacle course thing?? it was very long and high up. at first it was alright but as i had continued, it started to get more precarious and the obstacles were less stable and smaller and just generally terrifying omg. i had to quit halfway though because my brain just kept saying "i don't like this i don't like this i don't like this". but i was proud that i at least tried it and got halfway through. i think it's very important to be proud of yourself for trying something you normally wouldn't, even if you do panic. i'm happy that you're proud of yourself and happy that you stuck through. that's definitely something to be proud of, because it's difficult to stick through something when you're panicking because all you want to do is get out of the situation. idk but this video made me happy 💛
