"She’s Flapping In The Wind A Bit" | Is Netflix's Baby Reindeer Entertainment Or Exploitation?

  • The hit Netflix Show Baby Reindeer premiered just over a month ago, earning its creator Richard Gadd rave reviews, along with praise over how he portrayed themes of stalking and sexual abuse.
But one person who isn’t impressed is Fiona Harvey, a woman internet sleuths quickly identified as the ‘real’ Martha Scott, who harasses Richard Gadd’s character Donny in the show.
On Piers Morgan Uncensored, Fiona repeatedly denies stalking Gadd in real life; calling him 'psychotic' and a 'liar'. She also makes it clear that she’ll be taking legal action in the near future.
Cristo speaks with mental health trainer Marilyn Devonish and entertainment journalist Sam Dowler over the issues of entertainment and exploitation.

On the prison term issue, my guess is, she was convicted, but was given a suspended sentence, hence "she has never been to jail." Reminds me of when Lance Armstrong used to be asked whether he ever took performance-enhancing drugs and his answer always was "I never failed a drug test!"; verbal sleight of hand.

I know someone who worked on a true crime documentary for Netflix and he said the amount of proof they require to back up your story is massive. He said they want to see receipts and proof of everything or it doesn't go up. People seem to think Netflix would just make a show about a real person without seeing any proof or looking into legal matters. The real woman from BR clearly lied all the way through the Piers interview as she's clearly got issues.

I am not sure mental health issue is actually relevant in this case. The problem is that people with certain issues dont see themselves as having a problem, so they will not only deny they have an issue and will then obviously refuse to do anything about it. There are a ton of these kinds of people in the workplace and unfortunately the law simply doesnt know how to handle the situation.

Stalkers don't like being stalked all called out!
She lost it a bit in the interview when Piers asked her if she was in love with Richard.
She became very nasty then you can actually see the light bulb moment that she nearly revealed herself!
She has so many Facebook profiles & even has a status on one of them, "Reindeer I love you!"
She keeps them all updated with the same statuses or similar. I think I counted 7.
If she was worried about people looking for her or stalking her, why not lock the profiles or disable them?
Her grammar is atrocious! She couldn't have attended university!
On some profiles she is single & on others her relationship status is "complicated" not one says that she's in a relationship. She just lies & lies & lies!
Whatever her mental issues are she definitely has some narcissistic tendencies. She's obsessive and has a history of doing this. She's a repeat offender.
She probably did get a suspended sentence, so didn't spend time in jail or she did serve time & thinks she can lie about that. She lives in her own world. I don't feel sorry for her because people like this don't care how they hurt others. She's dangerous! Just never thought the world would find out. What I'd love to know is if she really has a job. She said Richard didn't have a job & lived off the government but he was working in a bar. She's the one who had all day to follow him around the bar. Bet she's not mentally fit enough to keep a job & she's the one living off the government.

In television shows, dramatization and creative liberties are commonly accepted, allowing for deviations from strict accuracy. Whether a character is offered tea, alcohol, or a soft drink, or whether a meal is involved, becomes inconsequential in the grand scheme of storytelling. Similarly, the portrayal of events, such as a character not actually being imprisoned, or the last episode presenting a 'what if' scenario, contributes to artistic expression rather than strict adherence to factual events.
While some shows claim to be based on true stories, it's understood that such assertions often incorporate elements of fiction and interpretation. Take, for instance, 'Fargo,' which despite its initial claim of being a true story, is clearly fictional. The disclaimer of being 'based on,' 'inspired by,' or 'a true story' is more about capturing the essence and emotional truth of an event rather than adhering strictly to historical accuracy.
I don't think they needed to change the character's name; however, they did, so that should definitely absolve them of any wrongdoing. Also, I doubt Netflix would have produced the series if they weren't 100% sure that all these emails, voice messages, etc., didn't exist.

Is it just down to baby reindeer because Alex Belfield was convicted of stalking and yet no one showed much sympathy for him and excused his behaviour as being vulnerable and having mental health issues. Stalkers seek power and control over others and they stop at nothing until they get it as we saw in the series. You can’t excuse this and forevermore say it’s MH issues when it’s not. When will you people realise there’s weird people who are just that but that doesn’t make them mentally ill. There’s good people and bad people in the world the bad ones are capable of anything some thrive on manipulating and controlling others not because they’re mentally ill it’s because they can and they want to feel superior and powerful. It’s disgusting those of you who are stigmatising mental health in this way. People who do bad things to others should be held to account and certainly not excused. More people are likely to sign up to Netflix to watch it. So the Dollers will still keep coming in. Why bite of the hand that feeds you until you have to. If a Defimation casecis made. Ironically Netfix could get even more. So chances are if found guilty they would still make a hansome profit. Change the prefix to Based on The Truth. But since Fiona put her self forward on Pierce 's show. She kinda outed herself. Denied it was her whilst admitting to some of the events. Never once giving a real answer to many questions asked.

Soo.... Did it turn out she IS a lawyer and DIDN'T get arrested? With NO previous issues like those in the show? Hmm also She isn't media trained so she'd be unequipped for an international Interview on such a huge platform. I feel compassion for her and i do feel she is being exploited

Netflix produced this piece over a period of time when any number of people ,journalists and investigators could have carried out background checks on the source material. Time will reveal what is true The premise itself is real and is sad and tragic,Top marks to the actress who played Martha. She is the Misery Chastain of of Netflix

That’s the only thing they did wrong in my view . The descriptor should be “ based on a true story “
There is clearly a license taken with some facts
However 41,000 emails and 106 letters are very specific numbers and are provable . Also this woman is a known stalker of other individuals who themselves have even sought protection from her . This may indeed be the reason she was so readily identified.
I am interested in people’s sympathy for this woman
If she were a man would this be the case . I very much doubt so

In fact Benjamin King, Netflix's senior director in the UK stated the following last week : 'Baby Reindeer is an extraordinary story and it is obviously a true story of the horrific abuse that the writer and protagonist, Richard Gadd, suffered at the hands of a convicted stalker'
Note he doesn't mention this as the abuse suffered by the fictional Donny but rather the abuse suffered by the real life Richard Gadd, if they don't have proof of these accusations they will be facing an expensive payout.

Firstly the guy is playing himself and acting out his own trauma including a SA. That alone make it one of the hardest hitting and unique shows ever. There’s the story itself which I understand if u don’t like but another major factor it the fact that we don’t know the truth. Her interview was all over the place. Full of lies but yet there were lies in the series too. It’s literally u folding in front of our eyes, and it’s far from over. I could go on but if u don’t get it u just don’t get it
