  • When the #SubaruBRZ and it’s Toyota twin came out nearly ten years ago, they reintroduced the affordable, rear drive, sports car to the young enthusiast. For 2022, the #BRZ and #GR86 is all-new with more of everything an enthusiast could want. We take the new #Subaru #BRZLimited to Lime Rock Park to see what this new version can do.

    The take rate on manual vs auto for each brand can probably be explained by each brands customer base and the offerings that they already have. I think a lot of Subaru at least recently had manual options, whether you are looking at the Outback or WRX/STI, and a lot of Subaru owners are pretty loyal to the brand. I think everyone has probably known someone who had an older manual transmission Forester or Outback or something like that. Whereas Toyota definitely has a lot more autos in its portfolio, even for their sports cars, like the Supra, so that probably plays a huge role in it.

      I know they meant the other one to recreate the wedge shape and although I like the front, I like the facelift and generally think the rear is finally FIXED. it just never sat right with me. Nothing wrong with the original ae86s imo
      Bummy isn’t even the right word. More like basic. I’m the type of weirdo that would’ve driven a black pontiac firebird trans am like a villain if I was alive in the 70’s.
      I’ve always liked doing those wide donuts and sweeping turns on a awd subaru, etc. but their strength has always been on precision handling and grip. Forget rallying, look at tt sti’s. Once you experience it, you’ll know.
      I appreciate subaru taking it in that direction, instead of encpuraging everyone to bust a drift or get sidewayz or whatever. There’s pros and especially built race cars for that, don’t ruin your nice daily. Those are the cars that end up totalled.
      I don’t think it was ever just about that even with initial d and motorsports but I’m not trying to ruin anyone’s fun. I love adding sway bars and coilovers, I’d never be against that, that’s also how it is over in japan where these tuner cars come from. But people also drive em off cliffs or should i say side of mountain trying to be cool, so…its the truth. People gotta use their judgement. Like slim profile tires and potholes. It ain’t gonna make it like that on the street for long. Yeah, ferrari has em but you ain’t supposed to daily that either. People will get mad, plug their ears, etc.
      Hopefully the line of specialty affordable solid rwd toyota coupes as an homage to the 86 stays strong, and that there remains a semblance of purpose. Because while other companies are looking to the future with the pasts eyes this car is looking at the past with the future’s eyes. And directly tweaking what we know to create something still interesting as far as new cars go. We need to be interested. People hate boring tech.
      My only fear in getting a new car, is probably the combination of boxer and timing chains and how much a nightmare it is for anyone to work on this engine ultimately unless they’re just putting in new ones. You can be putting around town in it and be destroying it or burning oil in it without knowing. They do like to go… people were even putting ea series engines on tiny airplanes. but they had specialty builders, which is my point. out of the factory, its great until something goes wrong and there’s no subaru expert you can trust or find easily. even if you were ready to pay. just forums where when theyre actually active, its pure disarray.
      most engine parts are supposed to be replaced, and you start getting into aftermarket territory and if you’re not ready you’ll end up with a quick and dirty repair and then the car ends up shattering the engine down the line so you get a new one from the junkyard put it in if youre past warranty and then you never forget to check your oil again, etc lol. The problem isn’t even you, it’s actually chugging oil one day. I wouldn’t even buy a used one at dealership prices much less a new one. I know toyota has their own bank for financing you, but not sure how subaru does for interest rates. I’ve had a few imprezas.
      At the end of the day you’re made to feel inferior for not having boost or nothing, lol.
      Bolt-ons can be a lot of fun.
      I’ve had to do a lot of upkeep, research, new motors, etc. Fun cars though…. I don’t think anything runs forever without maintenance and repairs, and the good thing about a boxer for me is that it was small enough to rebuild in my shed. But always had to track down someone who can bore and hone the block with diamond hone and ultrafine brushes…
      if you want an sti version, you won’t be able to buy it from subaru; you’ll at least have to go to a performance shop. and thats good, because there’s already too many mustangs going wot down the street and making power for the sake of it just because they could afford the $60,000 package on what everyone knows is essentially a big stupid mustang. get this instead and see your car be compared to a miata in a magazine.
      or you could have this, and then by the time I get my hands on it it sounds like a lawnmower with a rusty exhaust…
      Hell if you get one that ‘runs and drives’ on auction, you might still end up with maybe a thrown rod, that you can’t see from out, and 2 dropped valves, and a spun bearing, and the wrong year head gasket for a sti on it, or maybe all of the above lol thats what I got…. one case half has a piston crooked and stuck in it permanently.
      kicking myself because canbus is stupid and I can’t sti swap anything or go dohc. and I hardly even care; because I have time to read forums on the internet for days and I want to to make MORE POWAH BABY
      studying harder than a damn witch.
      and why does the new wrx, and outback and hyundai kona share the same plastic jeep fenders lol idk… look out when you go to a dealership theyll tell you they have no chips and no cars and you’ll be signing the papers like, “which one’s mine” don’t worry sir; it’s on the next super mega freighter out of japan.
      I would probably buy this, if I needed something reliable and cool and sporty that I could buy at the dealership for relatively cheap fully optioned for the same price as a wrx, this has looks but you wouldn’t regret that wrx either… easier to get inside of too, this is lowww. Or you could get an impreza and turbo it lol. I have all the time in the world to work on my own stuff and usually broke…
      once you’re paying the note on this, and you forgot to get that underchin spoiler but damn you also need a engine hoist so you can put those rep turbo headers on, ahhh lets go with the lip and double sided tape, hell lets make a youtube video…how does it go, hey its me ya boy…with the carbon fiber aliexpress fenders. hurry up and blow yr engine
      ahh this has intake noise reproduction in the cab so you can hear it. if you keep an open mind about it, it’s better than any exhaust resonator delete.

    It looks like Toyota's springs are stiffer in the rear and Subaru's springs are stiffer in the front. And Toyota compensated this oversteer setup with a ducktail spoiler. Toyota's setup is closer to racing cars (oversteer for slow corners and close to neutral in fast corners when aerodynamic starts working, pushing the rear tires down). I'd prefer Toyota's approach but I just like oversteer cause it's easier to control than understeer IMO. Either way, the car should be neutral in most situations. Should try both.

    • @TimurIskhodzhanov
      @TimurIskhodzhanov Před 3 lety

      Pretty sure with any reasonable front camber the BRZ will be more balanced than GR 86 on track. If not, stiffening the rear sway bar will get rid of the understeer. I'm pretty sure the ducktail spoiler is not generating any measurable amount of downforce to make any difference in corners below 100 mph.

    • @user-vy8jn9mc6g
      @user-vy8jn9mc6g Před 3 lety

      @@TimurIskhodzhanov It's not as easy with mcpherson suspension. And a little understeer is not bad IMO. Excessive understeer is a problem though. I'm pretty sure that is not the case. Speaking of a spoiler downforce - you don't need much for a balanced car, and yes, you'll feel it closer to 90 mph. The problem is that you might loose some of that downforce when the car start drifting (cause it'll go sideways).

    • @TimurIskhodzhanov
      @TimurIskhodzhanov Před 3 lety

      @@user-vy8jn9mc6g It is easy, to a certain degree. SPC 81305 bolts cost $20 and give you -1.7º; putting the bottom OEM knuckle/strut bolt into the top hole bumps it up to -2.0º. That's still not enough camber for these cars, but much better than 0º.

    • @user-vy8jn9mc6g
      @user-vy8jn9mc6g Před 3 lety

      @@TimurIskhodzhanov I don't think that you need 2 degrees for a street car. You can dial the proper balance with reducing the grip from the rear with stiffer springs or more tire pressure. I used to have overinflated rear tires, cause I prefer oversteer. The car becomes nervous on the limit this way but I'm OK with that . For racing you'll need a lot more modifications either way.
