I live in a part of Phoenix famous for it's mid-century style. Super easy to find old furniture by the curb for free. I love it. I walk 2 hours a day and often find things for free. Dressers from 1930's & 40's are common. I find so many I break them down and use the wood to build built-ins and other things. Currently making cabinets for my kitchen remodel all from salvaged material. Chairs, couches, entertainment units, toilets, sinks are all very common. We have city bulk pick up 4x a year and plenty of great items to be found. I garden and many of my plants were found curbside. Garden hoses, all I want. Great fun treasure hunting.

Everything in my parents house were original to the build in 1967 ! My dad also has shirts from the 70’s and 80’s that he still wears. He’s the same size he’s always been. 170 pounds at 6’1 “. He walks a lot and eats super healthy. Just got his blood work back and it’s perfect ! 😊

Great video, Dawn! Makes me homesick for my daddy. He passed 3 years ago this coming May. I miss him so much. He was a lot like your dad. Super frugal, super handy and saved everything. He always took great care of everything he owned. He was a kid of the depression. He was a minimalist long before it was trendy!! He made it until 95! The best thing he did was to provide an adequate savings to take care of my mom. He scrimped and saved and because he did, my mom’s needs are being well met! He taught me so much! Enjoy every second with your dad. The pain of losing him is unexplainable.❤

People who bought furniture in the 70’s have solid wood. And you are expected to keep it for several decades. Now people want a change every now and then. In high school I got my great grandmas dresser. Not sure the age. Didn’t really match anything in the room. But it had deep drawers. I think people also want the ability to drive it home in their car. So light and flat pack it is. Still have it in a closet for excess stuff.

In fact I became more active and had more time to do things I liked a lot more. Cable was actually kind of stressful. There was a lot of "news" and things that were entertaining but stressful. Like looking at a car wreck. Can't not look, but not nice to see. I think not having it improved my life. I looked for other things and even people to remove from my life if they were really making me happier. Surprised how many things I didn't need and was better off without.

I think we all need to eat less. I love a big fat super burrito, but now that I am retired and I'm not running around like a crazy person anymore, I'll buy a burrito and I cut it in half and it will feed me for 2 days. I just don't need the calories I used to chomp down. I used to be able to get a large fry at any restaurant and eat them in one sitting and now I can't eat them all. I'll eat those over 2 or 3 days. Trader Joe's salads will last me for 2 to 3 meals. Even a rib eye steak will last me for 2 or 3 meals now and back in the day, I could eat a rib eye steak in one sitting. So my food costs have gone way down post-retirement.
Most of the things I want to buy, I really don't need. So I ask myself do I want it or do I need it? I usually say "no" to both questions and I keep on walking. I also delete and unsubscribe to all shopping emails. They can be so tempting and if I don't see them, I'm not tempted.
Your Dad did a beautiful job on that shower! The tile is amazing! I'm not a do-it-yourselfer, so I hire people when I need help for the house. I tell myself I'm stimulating the economy! lol!

As a retired CPA, I want to thank you for this video and commend your father's wonderful, non-wasteful lifestyle. His life is materially rich and his home, auto, etc. are very nice! This truly gives hope to those on limited incomes. HOWEVER, you are apparently not considering the "non-monthlies," such as property taxes, an occasional medical/dental bill not covered by insurance, occasional need for a new roof, furnace, appliance, repairs he can't do himself, etc. These can easily, over time, double his yearly expenditures. Folks planning retirement need to consider this.

Older towels are so durable and well-made; keep them and buy them if they are reasonable at any yard or estate sale. The new ones don't last very long.

your dad is all the better for eating smaller portions of food , as long as it is well rounded and healthy and he is not skimping on nutrition.... most of us should be like him on that one.

Your Dad is a man after my own heart. I agree with everything he said, you DO save money by NOT spending it, period. I'm in the same boat I live on a disability income of $1100 a month, so u do learn to "love what u got". I too don't buy what I don't need any more. I drive an 18 yr old car, I have no mortgage, or credit card debt. Too bad he lives on the other side of the country in AZ I'd marry him just because he iron's his clothes. LOL

I LOVE all that nice wooden furniture and your dad's decor! I'd give anything to have my grandparents' furniture from years ago. Vintage everything is very popular, and the resellers would love to have what your dad owns, lol. Your dad reminds me of my mom's father. He stayed slim and trim, ate healthy, and when I was a kid, I remember watching him dive off the diving board at a swim club he and Grandma had joined years ago. Unfortunately, however, he was a lifelong smoker but managed to live to 78, when he died from a heart attack. He loved his Banlon shirts and Goldtoe socks and had every color, lol. Your dad's place looks so nice and the neighborhood so neat, no grass, lol. I'm always fascinated by states like Arizona and no grass to mow, what with my living in Ohio and all the greenery that needs constant upkeep in the summer. Thanks much for giving me another good memory of my childhood years in the 60s.

Hi Dawn! Thanks for the tour of your dad's place. Your dad is a very intelligent as well as wise man. He's learned over his lifetime to be content with what he has...just because a person can afford something doesn't mean it's a wise decision to purchase it. By eating smaller meals, your dad is reaping a two-fold benefit...keeping physically fit as well as making possibly 2 meals from what might have been one, thus saving yet being able to go out to eat. Nice video, thanks for sharing!

I love your father's home. It is beautiful! I love his furniture also, back then, the furniture was made to last, not like the laminated particle board crap they make now. When he retired, he should have started giving classes in do it yourself classes. Beautiful pictures, he sure knows how to decorate well!

Lots of the old furniture was made from solid wood, and the quality was better. Even the fabric clothes were made from , and the materials in decorations were better. Your father's home looks very nice and comfortable, and I did not see anything shabby or anything that needed to be replaced. I think we could all take lessons from him.

I still mow my lawn, fertilize, and pick up leaves every fall; there's an expense but my lawn mower is 23 yrs old and only pull cord and cable replaced in those yrs. Your dad gives me inspiration at my 70 yrs. I do have internet and enjoy studying history so I get my money's worth having internet but got rid of cable tv 8 yrs ago. Cheers.

Your dad’s possessions may be old but a better description is to say they are well taken care of. Your dad is very tidy! I’ve observed that men who served in the military tend to be tidy. Your dad is very wise and I’m going to try to be mindful of his advice to stay out of the stores and off Amazon in order to save some money! I was just telling someone that it seems like every time I go out shopping, I drop $100. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My Father is the same way. He was brought up in a small town in Texas during the depression. He went into the service during the Korean War after he came home, he married his high school sweetheart and moved to Los Angeles, Ca. Started working in the airline industry. Then he went to college and graduated with his B.A. Degree. He then became an Income Tax Consultant and retired after 50 years. Now he is 91 years old. He lives in a house that we kids were brought up in. He only paid $40,000 in 1974. It is a 4 Bd. and 2 bath., Home. Now he has three houses, and they are all paid off and they are rental properties. He was frugal when we were kids, and we had a name for him cheapskate. He always says now look who is laughing we sure are not anymore!

a man after my own values, I have everything i need and want I am creative and happy with no debt. His clothes will likely be costly now due to revival and his furniture is very likely REAL wood, built to last and quality, just goes to show that caring for your things saves lots of money, He needs to be a teacher for the younger generations to learn how to manage money and making wiser choices.

I had to laugh when you said your dad was extremely independent. His daughter is a lot like that! * That shower was beautifully done. * Clothes and furniture (real wood) cost more, and were better quality in the 1950 through the mid-1990s. Also, men's basic clothing does change over the years the way women's clothing does. I understand why he is hanging on to them. Not only is the fabric better, it feels better. * You can buy cheap look-a-likes of his bedroom furniture right now in the stores (isn't that funny!!! LOL Styles comes back). Loved your high school photo Mom Dawn. Thanks for this fun video.

Your channel popped up on my feed tonight. I can appreciate your dad as I am the same way. I will be 79 in April. I am still living in the first home we purchased in 1971. It is furnished almost completely with furniture from my grandparents and parents. The walnut dining room table, hutch, and buffet has to be at least 100 years old. Two cherry bedroom sets and the maple living room furniture belonged to my grandparents from the 1940s. An oak bedroom set which has a chifforobe was bought in 1942 when my parents were married. I still have a cashmere coat with a mink collar that my parents gave me when I graduated from HS. There are clothes in my closet that I have worn for at least 20 years. I do have Internet, cable, cell phone and landline and spend money to travel. I grow a lot of my food and still do most of the work myself around the house and yard. Thanks for the video. It is good to know that there are people out there that appreciate the simpler things in life and aren't sucked into the consumerism.
