This has become my favorite Gundam anime and that's tough with how much of an avid fan I am for Gundam Wing. This show, even though its sixth Season 1 episode airs on Sunday, has become my top 5 and is a masterpiece. It hits all the right notes.

Iâll never get tired of the moment when someone realizes a mobile suit is a Gundam
And I do believe this is the best Gundam Reveal Ever. The music, the sounds, the reactions of the characters watching, everything made it freaking Perfect. Granted I doubt everyone watching actually knows what a Gundam is outside of a couple who have ties to the old Mobile Suit Development Council. Like Elan Ceres here at the end.

@@fmitchell238a The MSDC banned Gundams because of the GUND interface putting pilots in the hospital or outright killing them. You can see in the prologue that the Lfrith (and now the Aerial) was designed to avoid causing this but requires a deeper link with the machine, which Ericht (Suletta) achieved when she was 4. She could be using it effortlessly in this case as the Gundam is her "sister".

From an outside perspective that makes them sort of mythical, like they're each a kind of Excalibur that (for good or ill) proves to be a huge turning point in human conflict.
@@cookechris28 In a sense, they are. Gundams are consistently far beyond anything else that exists at the time of their creation/introduction, effectively being capable of turning the tide of an entire battle all by itself. In the original anime for instance, the RX-78-2 (the original Gundam) so vastly outclassed the Zaku II that was Zeon's workhorse and mainstay front-line machine that the Zaku II's machine gun was effectively useless against the Gundam's armor, and the Gundam's Beam Rifle and Beam Saber could each take out a Zaku in a single hit. Mobile Suit sized beam weaponry was pretty much exclusively used by the Gundam until Zeon finally got to work developing their own MS beam weapons, primarily for the Gelgoog (which in terms of specs actually outclassed the Gundam, but by the time Zeon started deploying the Gelgoog it was too late, as they had already lost the vast majority of their Ace pilots [Johnny Ridden was one of the few Zeon Aces to survive the One Year War], which forced Zeon to toss inexperienced rookies into the highly advanced Gelgoog, which resulted in the Gelgoog's overall performance being far below what it should otherwise have been). Though just carrying the "Gundam" name doesn't necessarily make a mobile suit a proper "Gundam", as is the case with the Gundam Ground Type, which is essentially just a higher-spec mass-production model of the GM Ground Type that uses design data form the RX-78-2, but is heavily stripped down to cut down on production and maintenance costs (the Gundam Ground Type for instance didn't have access to beam weaponry until the later stages of the One Year War, and thus had to make do with the same kind of equipment used by the Ground Type GM).
And in the PS2 game, MS Saga: A New Dawn, during the course of the story it's explicitly stated that a single Gundam is powerful enough to take out 1,000 enemy Moblile Suits all by itself (and this line is spoken not long before you see the RX-78-2 for the very first time, and you are not long after given the Gundam).
If a Gundam ever winds up performing poorly in battle, it's very likely due to the pilot not being skilled enough to use it properly, or it's up against an enemy mobile suit that simply has it badly outclassed.
Gundam SEED is one of the few Gundam series where the protagonist's Strike Gundam doesn't just wipe the floor with the enemy, since the enemy has 4 Gundams of their own (that were all stolen). If not for the fact that ZAFT managed to steal the Aegis, Blitz, Buster, & Duel Gundams, the 5 Gundams very likely would have wiped the floor with the ZAFT forces.
The Chorus when the shield appears, and the small pause when the Bits get ready to fire, amazing details. This anime OST is amazing. Goosebumps all over. I can't stop watching this.

Anyone know when the OST will get its official release? I IMMEDIATELY went looking for it after seeing this at the end of the episode. So good!!!!
I also really love how the bits don't always fire from an established "front" but sometimes from a side and seemingly randomly and from all angles and the sheer suddenness of all that firepower perfectly coordinated and leaving the enemy pilot completely helplessly confused.
It's just a basic epic OST with a drop, nothing special.
That music, the animations. This Gundam is looking to hit the ground not running but practically sprinting.
Remember watching Gundam 00 and knowing this was going to be a great ride... Getting that feeling here.

@@kinglumption Hey, cgi is a tool, and an all CG Gundam anime could do things in ways no other could. It's about how you use it.
@@bthsr7113 this. cgi if used right can broaden how animations move on screen. even the most popular shonen animes right now use it. hell the one piece red film utilize some for combat and god damn that changes vastly how fights playout from show to film. in show they could start doing it if A. the studio staff knows how to do it and/or B. they cant due to the hardcore fans may get aggro on even a hint of cgi used for the show. hence the current limitations to the anime now.

Never under estimate the kind person in a battle, they might be hiding a demon inside.
Another small detail that I love is how they animated the swing of the Saber instead of a usual linear or curve swing. It's animated to be a circular sweep counter clockwise and then it's brought down. Akin to what you'd see more in animes with samurai sword fights
Suletta watches a lot of anime with Aerial in the cockpit back when they were at the Mercury. Seems like they do learn some moves from it.
She must have practiced with solid swords a lot
Because it's used to cut the tip of the head, not into the body. Different strokes and swings are used to target different points on a body. And in context, Suletta only had to cut off the opponents horn to be awarded the win.
I can watch that beat drop a million times and still want to do it again.
I love how aerial just stands there, letting the funnelâs do the work. No dramatic pose, just âDie.â And then a non stop barrage from every direction.
The hands are completely loose too. No clenched fists implies a complete lack of effort.

One thing that I appreciate is that for the first few viewings of this scene, it appears that Aerial's GUND-BITS effortlessly dismantle the Darilbalde. However, after watching through the entire first cour and coming back; you can actually see that the Darilbalde's more heavily armoured frame lets it hold out significantly better than either the Beguir-Pentes and the Pharact against the beam spam. If you watch the clip at 0.25 speed you can make out the blue flashes produced as the beams strike the Darilbalde and that while they are staggering and knocking it about; they aren't really doing much damage. It's only once multiple beams start targeting the same parts of the mobile suit simultaneously while switching to a more continuous firing mode rather than short pulses; does it actually slice the Dilanza to pieces.
I knew Suletta would win but I wasnât expecting total domination to that degree.

In every Gundam series, there has to be a Masked Villain
Mikazuki and Barbatos were brutal and fierce. Suletta and Aerial are elegant and mystical. Love the contrast between the two Gundams, even though they're from completely different series.
There's also this contrast - When Mika pilots the Barbatos and connects to it via Alaya-Vijnana, he's figuratively making a deal with the devil, exchanging his own well-being for power.
On the other hand, Suletta and Aerial consider each other _family,_ able to fight together as one because of it.
To add to this, Heero and Wing were stoic and efficient, and when Heero uses the Zero system, there is a respect of eachothers skills

@@buniboi2163 I wanna say technically no, it's a forced arrangement that neither of them particularly wants to be in. Miorine is more accepting of it because Suletta has no ulterior motives for wanting to marry her, she doesn't treat her like a prize to be won or something without independence. And so she'll use Suletta as a shield from would be suitors like Guel. So officially they are engaged, but I wouldn't say they're legitimately dating, not yet at least. Episode 2 could of course prove me wrong.
That moment when the bits line up around her and everything just pauses for that split second is amazing.
The sound effect they used for when the shield deflected the beam is so good. Really excited to see where the series will go.
I really got the sense that beam was strong, and that without the shield, Aerial would be missing a large chunk.
@@bthsr7113 I think the sound design & visuals are just brilliant. The whole thing of Guel's beam striking Aerial's shield is very reminiscent of the beginning of the Hashmal fight in IBO, when Barbatos tanks that first laser that the mobile armor puts out and as it deflects, it just evaporates a huge chunk of the mountain behind them. Similar thing here, where her shield just breaks the cohesion of the beam and it just splinters and sprays out around her.
The mechanical sounds when the Permet Score is activated and the red lights flash up through the torso are impresive.
Some series have good OST but donât really know how to use it
Other series have great use of it but not many good tracks

Play some Falcom Games. They use their music extremly well for their gameplay and story progression.
A good pause before the epicness, that's what I live for in these anime.
Attack on Titan has figured out to wield their badass OST to evoke such visceral emotion in the viewer. Glad to see Mobile Gundam is hopping on board this train!

@@maadtee6281 Yeah, probably. Even with the Barbatosâ beam resistant armor, itâs unlikely that beam weapons actually got as powerful as in other Gundam AUs since they were just dropped as soon as the armor was developed.

1:18 timing Suletta deploying, grabbing, then wielding the blade with the music beats is just sublime. I hope the editor is pleased with themself.
Even Elan closing his book was timed to the music. The sound direction in this anime is insanely good. Same goes for the scene at the end of ep 24 where Suletta is floating in space and most of the sound cuts out, it heightens the tension so well.

It's my first time watching a Gundam anime and I'm VERY IMPRESSED! I didn't expect much, but the first two episodes (prologue and EP-01) really delivered the setting to expect!
The soundtrack is amazing, the animation is astonishing, the look in the face of that dude when he realized that's not just some random mobile suit, but a freaking Gundam was over the top and the sound of the "plasma" blade being unsheathed gave me goosebumps!
Honestly? So far, it's a 11/10 for me, I really thought no other anime would make me this excited to watch and expect the next episodes so soon after watching Lycoris Recoil.
Think we can all take a moment to appreciate Gundam Aerial (of course, what do you expect when you bring in both the Mecha Designers from Gundam 00 AND Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans)

It's a neat concept that can be played with a lot.
It's actually referencing shor novel that ties prologue with main series. Suletta was suppose to get a shot and as kid she tried to avoid it. Mother told her that if she run she will gain one thing. She will avoid getting the shot. But then she might get really sick later on without it. But if she move forward, she will get the shot so she won't get sick and she will make her mother happy and she will gain recognition of others for her bravery. So if she would run, she would get one but if she move forward - she will get two.
At least in Episode 3 they explained this to people little bit more because it was little bit confusing when she was repeating that without context.

I love how efficient this all is. Thereâs no wasted movement. The mech just stands there as itâs using the drones and ends it with just a simple sword swing. Really helps to sell the difference in skill here

Heres the thing though. We dont know how much is skill and how much is the Aerial. Though im very curious to find out

@@carlzerris6566 I was assuming itâs a mix of both. Sheâs a better pilot and aerial is a better mech. Iâve never seen a gundam anime but I assume the flying things arenât automatic

@@oceandragoon3099 So funnels/bits operate differently depending on the universe. In 00 they are controlled by a haro and in uc a newtype will essentially command them with their mind. However in UC, its more a case of them pointing at the enemy the funnels need to destroy and the funnels do the rest. I suspect its much the same in this case since the funnels responded to here as a baby and basically did all the work. As John said above, this series will likely focus on her ability to pilot without relying soley on the Gundam tricks.

@@ax300kk Could also watch Gundam: The Origin series, it's a modern take on the prologue to the One Year War series (which is the original Gundam that aired in 1979). Very good looking and if you're interested in the UC timeline (the main Gundam timeline) it's an amazing start to the story.

I'm starting to suspect this Gundam series might be drawing a fair bit of inspiration from The Tempest by William Shakespeare?
The eerily graceful and sentient Gundam piloted by protagonists Suletta Mercury is codenamed "Aerial" - audibly identical to the elemental spirit Ariel. Suletta/Ericht and her mother Elnora roughly correspond to Miranda and the sorcerer Prospero, driven into exile by corrupt noble relatives. Suletta's naivety and inexperience with school life, tomatoes, and social graces corresponds to Miranda's innocent sense of wonder towards other human beings. Furthermore, at the end of Episode 1, Suletta accidentally becomes the fiancé of Miorine, the daughter of the man who destroyed her mother's old life - yet another parallel to Miranda's romance with Ferdinand, son of the man who exiled Prospero.
If the parallels hold, Gundam: The Witch of Mercury may also wind up being a tale of revenge with a happy ending. This being a Gundam series, however, a few tragic deaths are likely to happen first.

when you hear the vocals and you think the music was going to hit but that was just hype, then comes the silence before the storm and when the bits start to fire the music hits like a truck, a lamborghini truck, beautiful, elegant and powerful
This moment was so cathartic. Especially seeing how arrogant and jerkish Guel was earlier in the episode.
He needed a reality check, and Suletta just gave him one. Remember, kids, just because you're an entitled brat doesn't mean you win at everything. Also, there's always a bigger fish.
last point is the most important. he got off lucky, if Suletta was a hostile they encountered well on a field outing he wouldn't have just had his mobile suit dismantled into a scrap heap

They called it the hammer of Witches. This is more like daggers or obsidian edged scalpels. Efficient, precise, elegant, and handled by a deft touch. Her opponent is a hammer. Simple, brutal, and blindly direct.
I haven't watched any Gundam anime since Wing and G so seeing how it's come to this is pretty amazing.

The main mobile suits heads have just gotten smaller and smaller over the years. Nice to see that they've gone back to the 2d animation, and the soundtrack sounds great too
I've been a gundam fan for a long time now and I gotta say this is some of if not the best animation, sound design and scriptwork I've seen in the series. the MC is a brush of fresh air, the Mobile Suit Designs are really inspired, the story looks like it's gonna be something amazing and of course the possibility of the romance. it all is just so fresh and amazing and I can't wait to see more!
edit: also I gotta point.out how terrifying it is she's able to fire those bits all without once harming the cockpit, now that's impressive

If all we got from Gundam over the next few years was the Hathaway trilogy and the prologue of Witch from Mercury, I'd be a happy camper. But seeing that quality continue makes me even more excited for the future of Gundam.

This was an awesome reveal, I loved that they showed Miorine failing to pilot the Gundam first just to show that Sulleta's win wasnt just because Aerial is OP but was because Sulleta has a deep connection with her gundam. I also wonder what happened to LFrith from the prologue since Sulleta considered that gundam her sister.
The Lfrith is suspected to be upgraded into the Aerial, hence why they look similar.

Well, letâs be honest. Funnel attacks are bad enough just finding yourself in one. But when you donât even know what a Funnel attack IS and you suddenly find yourself surrounding by small, highly mobile remote beam cannons (not to mention not being in a zero-G environment for maximum mobility)âŠâŠâŠâŠyouâre pretty much screwed. There was really nothing he could do here. Credit for this goes to overwhelming advantage due to mobile suit.
The fact that Aerial Gundam can use Funnels and Bits under gravity is an advantage.

The animation is amazing, this alternate timeline is quite interesting with the 4 major corpos, each with their own style of mobile suits. Haven't been this pumped since 00, not a big fan of IBO though. This seems promising after watching the prologue and first episode.
But will this series make the same success as UC and CE?

What a time to be a gundam fan. Two episodes in and both moments for the main mobile suit of the series were amazing to watch. This and Gundam evo were practically being spoiled rotten.

There actually is really well used 3D CG in this epsiode and this scene in particular. It can look impressive when used correctly and allow for some amazing camera work and dynamic angles.
@@enriquemeseguer8140 yep, there are moments when you can still see the stiff movements that can be achieved through 3D animation.
Hathawayâs cgi was stunning and implemented perfectly, but there is a certain feel about 2D gundam which is hard to describe, it just looks awesome
Surprised that a character is reading Schopenhauer. Very fitting philosopher for the UC timeline, I wonder how his ideals will fit into this series, or at least into the character reading him.

That Aerial is being sealed, and toned down its power in order to not fully reveal it is a Gundam. Meaning there is still a "peak performence" or "over the limit" configuration still waiting for the Aerial.
Damn, it has funnels already? Makes you wonder how powerful itâs gonna be when itâs gets a mid-season upgrade/replacement.

Iâm glad I wasnât the only one thinking this. Most of the beginning versions are always basic to some degree but still out perform the vast majority of any other mobile suit. Itâs not until like you said later in the series that they have funnel/bit based weapons. The final upgrade for aerial is about to be ridiculously busted. 00 Qant finally has a contender.

@@dustf1nger118 Even in the prologue it had funnels. Though I donât know if Aerial and Lfrith are the same MS or if Lfrith is the predecessor to Aerial. Either way this is still beginning of series and this girl just wiped the highest ranked pilot in the school. I think the funnels will only work for her. Sheâs probably this universes equivalent/variant to Newtypes. What that variant is called we donât know yet. I can definitely see the school trying to take the MS from her. Aerial is on a whole other level than the schools other MSâs. As it should be, itâs a freakin Gundam.
@@brianjensen3576 It's implied that Lfrith was refitted into Aerial. I doubt a mining company would have the resources to make a brand-new Mobile Suit, and besides, Suletta treats Aerial like a sister, much like she rationalised Lfrith to be her sister years before.
Gundam Aerial is the second Gunpla I ever built because I love the design. I had never watched the show and had played an old demo of a Gundam back in the PS3 era. This is the first time I'm seeing anything from this show and this gave me chills!! This is amazing!! Quickly, she might be the first character I like!! Definitely going to watch this series because of her!! đ
