I had a unit that I started servicing and every few months the cap would die. I tried different brands, replaced contactor, replaced wiring. After the third time, I looked up the motor specs.. Someone before me had replaced with the wrong size cap. 30/5 vs 35/7.5.. Lesson learned....

Our 1991 Lennox AC - about 29 years old, which we use about 2 1/2 to 3 months in summer (Canadian capital summers), is still working: No tune-ups other than self-maintenance, no charge issues and never replaced original capacitor (with PCB?) since day one, but I'm keep a replacement capacitor handy - just in case! Thanks for the videos, Steven. Also enjoy watching your chihuahua as we own couple of them.

How often should these things be checked out on a routine basis? Should it be twice a year? Once in the spring and again in the fall? I am talking about routine checkups by a pro. I had an expensive newly bought washing machine for 5 years that stopped working. Had someone come out who needed to order a part for it. About a week later I got a call and they told me that my washing machine is obsolete. Not only did my machine not have any parts made for it anymore but the machine wasn't made anymore. While I was able to get a new washing machine because I had American Home Shield warranty which covered it, I found that to be crazy! If I did have AMS I would have been in trouble. So I have learned to ask if these machines as going to be discontinued or are the machines still being made, etc. Such a shame too. What a waste. Machines used to last forever, but companies have learned that if their products don't last, then consumers will have to purchase another product from them. So they make more money. I don't want to buy anything that is going to be discontuined after a couple of years, can't get parts for, etc.

i don't think the oil type that makes capacitor went bad. it's the capacitor itself that were cheaped out to make it cheaper. a well known brands like ASC (Shizuki for Japan market), KEMET, Epcos, etc should be a lot better than cheap chinese caps

From what I've seen the AmRad caps seem to be the best (made in America.) Checked out a 24 year old Rheem system today cause they just wanted it looked at to make sure it's okay. It still had its original AmRad cap in it from 1997 and was still full at 35/5. I was extremely impressed
