- The Silver Star is a passenger train operated by Amtrak on a 1,522-mile (2,449 km) route between New York City and Miami via Washington, D.C., Richmond, Raleigh, Columbia, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Tampa. The Silver Star and its partner in the Silver Service brand, the Silver Meteor, are the descendants of numerous long-distance trains that operated between Florida and New York for most of the 20th century. This video is a comprehensive, travel blog-style tour of riding on this train in an Amtrak Sleeper Car Roomette. Enjoy!

I've ridden in a roomettes from Philadelphia to St Louis. Nice accommodations for a single person. The dining car meals were superb. My trip was in 1958
Thanks for sharing your experience
😀😀
What a coincidence! I am actually on this exact train right now!
Where you headed?
@@TheBronxFanner Miami, taking a short little vacation there
@@ROTE Cool.
Congratulations
Is the food any better then when this was filmed?😬
I am a fast reader, but some of the captions were going to fast. Also, I had to choose whether I wanted to watch the video or read the captions. In some parts it is not possible to do both. A lot of transportation channels have switched to narrated rather than captions. You might consider that. You have so much great information and I want to see the video and get all of the interesting tid-bits. Thanks for a great video.
Narration ruins the video, want to watch not listen to someone talk
I’m glad I’ve already learned about Amtrak long-distance trains to understand this video
I traveled this route every year except for 2020-21 on my way to see family in Florida the views on that route never gets old I could do that route every day and each day i would probably see something new
Due to an eye operation, I need to know if this train goes deep underground? Pressure being underground would be a concern. Can u kindly let me know?
@@discosphinx no it doesn’t go underground
Nice bro, I used to work for amtrak as a conductor and engineer, I miss those days
EXCELLENT!!! Felt like I was actually traveling there! Thanks so much!!
Woah! A trip report, that's amazing. Ive rode on Silver Star #91 to Raleigh, NC to go see some family, then went back to NYC the next week. Awesome video!
2:10 this looks dope.
Great trip report. I rode the Silver Star from Washington D.C. to Orlando Florida at the beginning of June and it was a fantastic trip. At 4:18 that looks fabulous. This trip I had was great. I even have a trip review of that same train as well.
Yesterday, I went on the Silver Star from Cary, NC to Washington, DC! But on an Amfleet II Coach.
I like the printed subtitles in this video. They move a bit fast to read, but much prefer to read than have the camera person “act”, and close up on themselves. Love how the text stays mostly subjective. The food opinions are also appropriate. I try to bring lobster to eat onboard, and other passengers frequently ask an attendant, “can I have what he’s having?” Plan ahead.
We rode the Silver Star East Coast to Florida from Wilmington DE last May 2023 and were pleasantly surprised by the old fashioned dining car service. Real white table cloths, real silver ware, three scheduled menus to choose from a day. No McDonalds/cafeteria food. Fine service reserved for sleeper car people only. I hope this is a trend. I guess I'm spoiled now. I just saw a video for service East Coast to New Orleans on Amtrak Crescent, dining looked pretty dreary. So I guess you have to check in advance.
Amtrak thankfully switched from “flex” dining to traditional dining for the Silver Meteor and Silver Star services! A most welcome change that certainly follows international best practice. Hoping that other east coast services such as the Lake Shore Limited follow suit!
Wow. I've been on this train several times. NYC- TAMPA..NYC - SOP.. It's a good trip when it's on time
I see many complaints about the meals while on board. I'm traveling Philadelphia to Port Charlotte Florida this summer. What type of food options do they have? Its a toss up between coach and the basic sleeper car. Don't need the toilet in my room as the restroom stink is bad enough on coach service.
@@pattybanzhof I suggest you pack some food. The food on the train isn't good and it's expensive...I usually get sandwiches , and other stuff then.put it in a cooler that's portable.. if you're in a sleeper the drinks and food are included but you need to tip whoever takes care of you
The cafe food on Amtrak is not that expensive
I rode the Acela train last year and I remember doing this route from Providence to BWI. It is nice to see this video and know some facts about what I was looking at. I am riding the Silver Star and having a roomette for the first time this Thursday. This year marks 40 years since my first Amtrak ride when my grandmother and I took the train from Cleveland, Ohio to Seattle.
Nice! I would Love to try this One Day.
Sadly I am a kid and I have only been on one Amtrak sleeper train. But one day I will ride them all!
When you reach the age of being able to obtain one, get yourself an Amtrak Mastercard credit card and build up those points. Use the card, pay the bills on time and start working toward those free rooms.
First pay off all of the debt you owe because you picked an Ivy League school and it didn’t offer you a scholarship, then go into crippling credit card debt, pay that off, and retire with 1$ saved and you can!
I enjoyed the ride and smart commentary.
Prior to the pandemic the Silver Star didn't offer any dining options other than what could be purchased in the snack lounge. The Silver Meteor had the flex dining as apparently both Silver Service trains now provide. Fortunately, at that time, the Silver Star sleeper price was lower to reflect the lack of dining.
Sleeper car is the only way I’m making this trip by train. I’ve done coach in the auto train a couple of times… one time it was empty and I could spread out. Last time it had a crying kid that kept the car up all night.
Great video but some of the information text wasn't on very long to read it. Seemed like I'd get halfway through reading and it would disappear before I was finished with a few of them.
Wasn't aware of the accommodational differences between Viewliner I's an II's until I watched this excellent video. Took Train 91/92 recently in coach -- was very comfortable but your tour of roomettes/BRs makes me want to investigate taking a room next time. IMHO Amtrak should stress the fact that the price charged isn't high when it saves you cost of a hotel room. Plus the trip is beautiful -- many historic sites visible along the way.
Very good points!! It really is such a comfortable trip in sleeper
So where it looks like PRR cantenary poles coming out of the first street tunnel on the rfp. That was the old PRR main electrified freight line to DC and Potomac yard in Crystal City/Arlington Va. when conrail took over they took down the wires but keep the poles up. Some poles have been taken down but only near the long bridge area but the others are still standing strong as well with a few PRR signals in benning
I have taken this train in the sleeper numerous times and will be doing it again this Thursday. Always love the experience. However I am very disappointed that the traditional chef meals have not returned. Amtrak has reinstated it on the west coast I understand but not on the east. That's upsetting. Once again, a great video.
I'm gonna be taking this train in December in Coach. I should be taking it next year in Sleeper
@@K.D-1109 Get the Amtrak Mastercard and build up points toward travel. Also using the card on the Rewards site on hotels and auto rentals offer points by the thousands. You can steadily build towards free bedroom/roomettes. It's a great experience.
Congratulations
Good video, 0:30 the tracks from Deland - Poinciana in Orlando are also owned by FDOT
Chef prepared meals?... LOL
12:20 so this is where "DJ Hammers Planes" comes in, LOL. nice C130 background aircraft. probably a A-H model, not a J model.
plus 12:25 we see A10 warthogs.
Very much enjoyed this. Long live our rails. If we really cared about pollution these would expand and be upgraded.
I did the Silver Star from New York City to Kissimmee, Florida this past November Thanksgiving week. Did the lounge at Moynihan train hall, got a roomette on a Viewliner II just like you did, ate Asian salmon and rice in the dining car for dinner. I'm trying to do a video of the experience and it's running over 30 minutes in my editing. Loved every bit of the ride, except for the dirty windows.
fantastiuc video
wow 😲luxury 😎👍🏻
"Silver Star" service and equipment is deplorable. I worked that train off and on for 30 years from 1985 to 2015 - as Attendant and Conductor - and have seen first hand how Amtrak's tarnished "Silver Service" has steadily deteriorated over the years. Blame Amtrak's Board of Misdirection and CSX.
And after getting much needed influx of cash they still have not returned full dining car service to the Florida trains with the exception of the Auto Train.
Mino ride the Silver Meteor and Silver Star.
Nice compilation of highlights of the route.
IMHO, the food options at Moynihan lounge are great; far better than any other Amtrak lounge, and better than the current Flex food on the Silver Star. Perhaps they were less impressive because you visited during breakfast hours.
Nitpick on your terminology: Roomettes and Bedrooms are sleeper rooms or accommodations, not sleeper cars.
No mention of the Red Bull Arena stadium at Harrison?
Thanx for the great trip. Could almost feel the temperature getting wormer the further south we went. Return trip via the Autotrain??>
The fast and Furious
My favorite view on this route is Washington and the rural areas in the Carolinas and Georgia going through the small towns and u see police, fire , post office are all under the same roof lol
very interesting for a french like me !
I have ridden the silver star many times from Newark NJ to Tampa FL. IMO From NY/NJ to NC sleeping car is not necessary as all the travel is mostly daylight hrs. If you are going from VA/NC to Florida get a sleeper. because it's mostly overnight travel. If you are traveling all the way from NY to Fl get the sleeper
19:42 You could have mentioned that the train was passing through a Civil War Battle Site, the southern wedge of the Frist Battle of Fredericksburg; that Pyramid you passed by was Meade's Pyramid.
Meade is a w
I❤❤riding the train. I got a sleeper on recent trip to Savanah. Disappointed in the size for the amount you pay. Coach seats are more comfortable except you dont get to eat in the dining car. Im a big fan of the dining car..my late dad worked as a dining car waiter for nearly 30 years. Dont like eating food from the sack bar and wish Amtrak would return to allowing coach passengers to pay the cost of eating in the dining car. Doesnt make sense to me that they changed the policy.
18:56- Reagan is in fact a NATIONAL airport. The international airport in northern VA is Dulles which is about 45 minutes west. (I live about 5 miles from Reagan by the Alexandria Amtrak Station, so I thought I would share that for your future videos.
Going on 91 next month.. First train ride 😳🤞🏾
DJ I when were you at Staples Mill because I was there on Friday last week
I rode the Amtrak train all the way california
Hey I’m riding the silver star this Saturday from nyc to Tampa. Is there a certain side of the train that has better views than the other? I want to take a few pictures
I slept and woke up at the end.. you could've added voice
CSX does not own the tracks from Deland to Poincianna, FL. Those are also owned by the Florida DOT (regarding your map)
Poinciana is the most Florida name ever
Enjoyed my one negative it was very hard to read the commentary the white print got lost as the train was moving
Can you do a video of getting on off train...I'm afraid to board as I have back issues I afraid I can't climb up. Thank you for this content
Don’t worry! Amtrak is excellent with providing assistance to those who may need extra help boarding and alighting. 😀
❤❤❤❤
I like the viewliner roomettes better than the superliner. i feel like you get more for your money.
If a person is in coach can they reserve to eat in the dining cart?
Amtrak needs to do a better job at cleaning the windows 😂
You were riding through the Hudson River Tunnel, not North River Tunnel.
Which one of these stops Orlando or Kissimmee Florida is closer to the port Canaveral cruise ships are to the hotels there either one
Is the lower bed a double-bed size?
Where are the seats in Farley Waiting Room?
unfortunately I read somewhere that there are no plans to bring back tradtional dining to east coast trains for the foreseeable future. Traditional didning is limited to Multi-Night journeys only at the moment
great video but print too fast
Site of Chase, MD wreck 12:18
Someone please answer. Due to an eye operation, I need to know if this train goes deep underground? Pressure being underground would be a concern. Anyone know?
Why would a train go underground? It’s not a subway.
A roomette goes for 5 bills or higher that’s for one night, how is that cheaper than a motel?
Has anyone ever traveled this distance through coach?
U had me till u arrived @MCO… 🤷🏻♂️
How long is the train ride
About 31 hours
Amtrak treats it's western passengers far better when it comes to food
Man, you could of filmed the engine change. Otherwise not bad.

Yeah, we get it. Dining sucks. Sheesh.
It's a horrible experience, this people have to be getting something out of this. Workers are horrible and bothe ways around 3 hrs late, it stops with no announcements to tell you what's going on or nothing like that. Coach sitting is bad, sinks run out of water its terrible the wifi it's terrible cuts out every 2 min. Don't do it take a plane
