  • Here is the next big, small gaming desktop from HP, the TG01-0023W, another great offering by Walmart that is priced at $599 new and $499 refurb, but the refurb is practically new. Following my Pavilion 690 mods from last year, I had to grab those new ones versions of the popular gaming desktops and test it myself, plus of course improve everything I can.

I've had the newer version TG02 (same case design and brackets, different front cover) for a couple of weeks and the only complaint is the thermals (reaching 90+ degrees while gaming for CPU and GPU). I ended up installing an upgraded CPU cooler, added three 92mm 1600rpm redux fans (1 exhaust, 2 intake). The two intake fans were installed using the black bracket on the side (had to recreate the black bracket on CAD software and then used the negative space to fill the peaks and valleys on both sides of the bracket to create an isolator gasket for the fan to only suck air from the vent holes/mitigate vibration and had to dremel a small portion of the SSD caddy to fit the fans. Now it runs like a dream but will need to rearrange the fans if I want to upgrade the GPU in the future.

For those interested in going dual-channel, I got the Crucial CT2K8G4DFRA32A 16gb kit today and put it in my TG01-0429. It properly registered at 3200mhz. However, the "upgrade" to dual-channel resulted in only 3fps increase across the board in only one of my games. Two other games saw no appreciable difference. So, it would appear that my config in the TG01-0429 (Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1660 Super) doesn't really care about dual-channel anyway as far as gaming is concerned.

Looking to maybe add a second M.2 slot with an adapter, but I don’t know if it will work or if it will choke the WiFi in the other slot *EDIT* It works! this is another possible upgrade as long as the GPU isn't too tall. I tested this port with an M.2 256GB SSD, and a 4x USB 3.0 port unit and both worked fine. attaching an m.2 NVMe to a smaller port limits it's speeds, but it still is much faster than an older SATA SSD and works great as a backup drive if you choose to upgrade the computer's stock storage

I have a TG01-2002hk Hong Kong version with a 11700f (yeah...) inside this, do you think a Thermalright AXP-100 can fit in this? Or if tower coolers like the AK120 mini they make would fit here...

Some people do use Noctua towers, but personally I would only us a downdraft cooler

I was hoping you'd show how to upgrade the Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi 6. Which exact model did you use? There are different variations and haven't found the correct part. I have this same computer and tried updating the to Wi-Fi 6 but it hasn't worked. Hope you can help. Thanks!

Look for any AX201 or 210 and 211 Intel models

Is there a way to add a power button extension so I can have the desktop hidden? I've done this with older dell optiplexs. Is it possible with the tg01-0023w?
