- Here is the next big, small gaming desktop from HP, the TG01-0023W, another great offering by Walmart that is priced at $599 new and $499 refurb, but the refurb is practically new. Following my Pavilion 690 mods from last year, I had to grab those new ones versions of the popular gaming desktops and test it myself, plus of course improve everything I can.

Awesome
I've had the newer version TG02 (same case design and brackets, different front cover) for a couple of weeks and the only complaint is the thermals (reaching 90+ degrees while gaming for CPU and GPU). I ended up installing an upgraded CPU cooler, added three 92mm 1600rpm redux fans (1 exhaust, 2 intake). The two intake fans were installed using the black bracket on the side (had to recreate the black bracket on CAD software and then used the negative space to fill the peaks and valleys on both sides of the bracket to create an isolator gasket for the fan to only suck air from the vent holes/mitigate vibration and had to dremel a small portion of the SSD caddy to fit the fans. Now it runs like a dream but will need to rearrange the fans if I want to upgrade the GPU in the future.
What cpu cooler did you use?
Just grabbed one of these refurbished for $399! Really good deal considering the cost of GPU's right now. Awesome video, thanks. Subbed!

With a 1tb modern nvme ssd and 2x8gb 3200mhz memory, it performs surprisingly well. You need to run ryzen master to OC the ram. But you may as well, the ryzen 3500 can easily go to 4.2ghz.
How can i make my ram 3200?

Very helpful video. Removing the factory CPU backplate was very difficult. I couldn't find my spudger, so I used 2 old credit cards to get it off. I think my total time start-to-finish was 2.5 hours.
Upgraded my RAM to 16GB V-Color Prism Pro RGB kit number - TL8G32816D-E6PRKWK. Works great no issues since upgrading 2 months ago.
For those interested in going dual-channel, I got the Crucial CT2K8G4DFRA32A 16gb kit today and put it in my TG01-0429. It properly registered at 3200mhz. However, the "upgrade" to dual-channel resulted in only 3fps increase across the board in only one of my games. Two other games saw no appreciable difference. So, it would appear that my config in the TG01-0429 (Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1660 Super) doesn't really care about dual-channel anyway as far as gaming is concerned.
Great Info!
Thanks bro

Looking to maybe add a second M.2 slot with an adapter, but I don’t know if it will work or if it will choke the WiFi in the other slot *EDIT* It works! this is another possible upgrade as long as the GPU isn't too tall. I tested this port with an M.2 256GB SSD, and a 4x USB 3.0 port unit and both worked fine. attaching an m.2 NVMe to a smaller port limits it's speeds, but it still is much faster than an older SATA SSD and works great as a backup drive if you choose to upgrade the computer's stock storage

Hey there, the one listed in the video are memory modules that should work out of the box, the none JEDEC rated memory would require Ryzen Master settings in order to achieve its speed, the 3200mhz JEDEC one works right away, and there are no memory settings in the Bios
@@HardwareSense Great. Grabbed JDEC (w your link) and will have today. I’ll keep ya posted😊
Thank you!
Bummer. Grabbed the Crucial Ballistix Black 3200mhz but only running at 2667. Any idea how best to get running at 3200? Ryzen Master? If so, any good tutorials on settings for this ram within master?
@@DarrinBentley You will have to play around with Ryzen Master with those
Just got this pc (or something very similar to it, still part of the tg01 line), and was thinking about switching out the case on top of some of these upgrades. Do you think it would be worth it? Also what size is the motherboard? Thank you for this video!
@ i got it straight off the hp website, not sure if they're still in stock tho
@@harshanas1729 the motherboard is a baker, proprietary from hp, meaning it has specific measurements only for the pavillion case, I've found a case switch video but it wasn't worth it since you lose the ability to use all of your ports on the motherboard.
@@razawavs Thanks for telling me this, I never ended up swapping the case and now I know not to.
Is there an extra header to power the intake fan or will the splitter cable be needed?
Hey! Nice vid! I wanted to upgrade my cpu cooler on my HP pavilion TG01-1109 will a 120mm water cooler fit it? Thanks so much!
It will not unfortunately
I have the Hp 290 G2 business PC and it looks exactly like this one
I mean the case is essentially like most other hp cases just with a different front plate
Hi where did you get the northbridge heatsink from? My build didn't include one
Any point to using 32g of ram versus 16? The Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz DDR4 DRAM Desktop Gaming Memory Kit 32GB (16GBx2)) ? I dont have to worry about BIOs do i? Also whats a good 1tera SSD I can safely have put in? Any suggestions for something that will last awhile and be fast? Is it possible to use a PCI slot ssd or no? Sorry i have limited pc knowledge
32GB is good if you are doing video editing and of course in general the more ram the better, and more future proof.
The one I just bought came with a Ryzen 5 5600x , upgraded ram and ssd and have a great mid tier pc, next upgrade will be swapping the Radeon r5 5500 to an RTX 2060 and maybe the cooling
Even stress testing now, stayed under 70°C while hitting 140+ frames on most games
@@xxragingxcajunxx1924 LITERALLY same here, lmk how your upgrade goes
What is the max memory for this? I just picked one up. Also - what size is the rear fan? I am looking to get an RGB one.
32gb and 80mm
9:25 That's a large case fan xD
Awesome Video! I just got on refurb and I have an unused AMD wraith prism cooler that came with my 3900X, will I be able to use that cooler on this build?
No, the mounting on the motherboard is Intel
@@HardwareSense ah thats unfortunate, even if i got an AM4 retention bracket it wouldn't line up with the holes?
@@Fujioh Yes no matter, you can use the AM4 bracket or heatsink. The mounting holes are Intel
@@HardwareSense Thanks for clearing that up. I'll probably end up going with the Scythe Big Shuriken you recommended then.
@@Fujioh I would recommend the cheaper Snowman over it, same performance for a fraction of the price
is there an alternative for the cooler? some Noctua for example? the one you recommend is not available but if you search amazon it appears for 83$.
Just get the Snowman for $16 it's just as good as the Big Shuriken 3. It has its own video, check it out.
9:17 What about a universal 12mm fan mount bracket? Thanks for the vid!
Unfortunately I have not found a way to mount a 120mm fan yet, but I haven't gaven up yet
I have a TG01-2002hk Hong Kong version with a 11700f (yeah...) inside this, do you think a Thermalright AXP-100 can fit in this? Or if tower coolers like the AK120 mini they make would fit here...
Some people do use Noctua towers, but personally I would only us a downdraft cooler
I was hoping you'd show how to upgrade the Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi 6. Which exact model did you use? There are different variations and haven't found the correct part. I have this same computer and tried updating the to Wi-Fi 6 but it hasn't worked. Hope you can help. Thanks!
Look for any AX201 or 210 and 211 Intel models
Is there a way to add a power button extension so I can have the desktop hidden? I've done this with older dell optiplexs. Is it possible with the tg01-0023w?
Sure you can
