Though, the players should have some input into the direction and story of the game since it is their story. Just not that much by just one player.

There is a very simple solution for "That guy", it's a mystical technique called NOokay. It works like this:
"I wanna be the pilot and own the ship" You're not the main character, NO.

    Okay.

The worst by far was a Spanish girl, she would insist on maxing out any "is pretty" or "has money" mechanics the game had. forcing her character into everything that was going on, insist that she would do it better, then throw a strop when the specialist out performed her. No show or walk out of sessions when her character faced any kind of consequences for her bad behaviour, or failures. And her worst one, any time she was called out or corrected for inappropriate behaviour, immediately shut you down with "but in Spain..." not as an apology for being in the wrong, but as justification why she is so obviously right.

Heck, they aren't really in canon, either; Stormtroopers are pretty clearly portrayed as generic grunts, who can't even shoot a target that's right in front of them! In the Fantasy Flight system, there are higher-grade Stormtroopers and specialist Stormtroopers, but the really dangerous ones are the Dark Troopers that're taken straight out of Dark Forces--the hyper-advanced combat droids that just happen to have armor plating that makes them look like 7-foot-tall Stormtroopers on steroids. A story quite similar happened to me.
I've been DMing for a couple of years now and the first time I've actually been as a player in DnD was a few weeks ago. I made my character, a chaotic evil tiefling sorcerer (just to put at ease your minds she wasn't a murderhobo, just an evil character that isn't quite right on the mind field) that was quite the illusionist. Well, to the point:
If enemies ambushed us it didn't matter, just cast sleep and kill them while they are down.
If there was an enemy lair i would just transform myself in one of them and act my way to the bottom of the lair.
If we needed to intimidate someone I'll just draw and illusory eldritch abomination like sword to do it.
In the end I ended up doing everything and I only realised once the session was over. They forgave me because it was my first game as a player, but man do I feel bad about it to this day.

They were roommates, "Steven" lived with the DM so he couldn't exactly kick Steven out of the apartment. This was mentioned at the start of the story. DM, I can understand your position. It sounds like your friend is a really toxic combination of Very excited to play and very insecure (the player insisting that they be able to do everything mainly because they need to be needed by the party to feel validated). I've discovered through my own experience that directly telling players "no" does not always lead to the experience you want. Choice, even if it is but an illusion, is far more effective. When Steven insisted that everyone needed to be a rebel, you could go in secret to the other players and tell them that they needed to appear to be of the rebellion, but could be mercenaries or spies for the empire. Then you'd play with each player not knowing each other's true nature. Then, have the ship be ID'd when scuffling with the Empire. He's a famous pilot and that's his ship. Either have the empire pounce on it after the team goes to an away mission on a planet or have it be captured. Now the party has a choice -- liberate the old ship, or steal a new ship. If Steven insists on doing his own thing, just don't fudge any dice in his favor. If he insists that you're picking on him, use his "famous rebel pilot" reputation against him, and make sure that all dice rolls against his character are public so that he can see your honesty. Don't want to replace an injured character with a replacement or wait for healing? Don't tell him out of character that it is acceptable. Roleplay a superior officer coming down the hall way and dictating to the group that because the mission is too important to risk failure that either A) a different team is being sent instead, or B) the team is delayed for a few hours while the injured team mate is being outfitted with some sweet prosthetics.
For the interrogation, a failed save should result in the non-Steve character being knocked out and Steve being taken hostage. Now not only is the problem player at the center of everything, but he's also dependent on everyone else to come save him, thus giving them some action time too.
TL;DR -- For issues of this nature, I would suggest role-playing events and choices for the characters, rather than doing out-of-character discussions. Use notes to talk to the other players privately, if needed. Roleplay makes it way more difficult for players to argue with it.

@starshipeleven I strongly disagree with this. It's called being passionate, and sometimes it brings out the worst in a lot of people. You can't just pigeonhole people like that, human's are a lot more complex than you think. If you watched the video til the end, you'll see that the OP was fervently speaking on behalf of his best friend to let everyone know how much of a good friend he is outside of ttrpg's. I mean, how can you even come to a conclusion like that? That single campaign brought out the worst in op's best friend and you're telling me that it was that situation that would dictate years of friendship between op and his best friend, and all this time, all of the good that his friend was doing was purely manipulation? At least be realistic, I'm doubting your doubts at this point. I can tell you that I've seen people act like that in real life especially when it comes to video games.

    • @rooky3526
      @rooky3526 Před 3 lety

@starshipeleven First off, I'm going to say that you raised very interesting and very convincing points and if this had been any other situation I might have been convinced by your reasoning, but not in this case.
To be honest, we have too little to go on. We are all making assumptions in their relationship off of one situation compared to years of friendship. But much like you can make the assumption of relationship abuse, I can also make an assumption of a guy being too passionate for his own good, and here's why....
It seems you missed a moment in the video where the best friend voluntarily made the decision to stop playing. He wasn't booted off by th OP, no he made a conscious decisiom to stop playing the game. If there was a clear attempt at manipulation, then he would have continued playing regardless and kept doing the same mistake like you said, but that cearly did not happen here.
What most likely happened is that the best friend was too passionate for the game and after the session he had a post-session clarity and realized how much of being a 6-year old he was acting and opted to kick himself out. That really doesn't look like an abusive relationship to me.
And much like you're speaking from experience, so am I. I see this situation happen a couple of time especially on competetive video games like fighting games, moba's, fps etc. This is not actually uncommon in video games.
And what is with this narrative of relationship abuse? I never got that vibe from this video at all, and honestly I think this might be a case of you projecting.
If you have time, there's a channel called taking20. It's a dnd channel and they have a video of the types of bad players in dnd and how to deal with them. In one of the list, the host gives a label to a type of players he calls a "spotlight hog". The host describes this player as actually being the most passionate in the game because he is the most invested and wants to get included in every scenario. This, as you can tell, describes the op's best friend to a tee.
Honestly, I didn't see any relationship abuse, I just a saw a bad player and a dm who did not know how to curb that sort of behaviour on the table.
And remember, this is all in the perspective of the op. For all we know, his best friend, might not even have acted like a 6-year old, but the op saw him in tinted glasses because he was ruining the game for everyone.

    • @rooky3526
      @rooky3526 Před 3 lety +3

@starshipeleven Oh no, I'm not doubting the actions, I'm doubting how op portrayed those actions. Op himself mentioned how great a person his friend is outside of the games but no adult would go out and say his character is "Da biggest and the da bestest pilot ever". It's either he's paraphrashing ork quotes from warhammer 40k or op is bitter about his friend railroading the game threw that shade of insult. But that's besides the point.
And sure, just ignore over the fact where op's best friend, voluntarily opted to kick himself out mid session. Yeah, just completely go over what I said about that.
All you're talks about him, being a narcissist, a (disagreeable description) spotlight hog etc. Is thrown out the window with that action right there. Do you want to just ignore it again?
Plus, they only had like 2 sessions where op's best friend was playing before he kicked himslef out, 3 if you count session 0. Well technically, 2 and a half since the best friend kicked himsled in the middle of session 2.
From what I see, session 1, op's best friend did all that and apologized to op. Session 2, he did all of that again and apologized for what he did, not only in session 2 but also by railroading the campaign in session 0. He also personally sent out text messages to all his friends to apologize for his behaviour.
Seems to me that he couldn't control his excitement and became a spotlight hog, and in he middle of session 2 where he asked to take a break, he realized he was being a dick and couldn't control himself and opted out mid session.
Where's the abusive relationship there? The narcissism can clearly be seen, but only in game. The last bit of dialogue between op and his best friend was pretty self-explanatory.
Look buddy, I'm not sure why you have it out for op's best friend, or why you're forcing this narrative of relationship abuse and labelling him as a narcissist outside of the game. Remember, this is but a single event over the course of years of friendship between them.
Hey, I'm done defending op's bestfriend. If you still have a problem after I gave you a different persepctive on the matter, then that's on you and that's your deal, cause then, nothing I would say would ever change your views. But that's just fine, we're merely speculating after all. I highly doubt that neither you nor I would ever know how deep or shallow their friendship runs. That's for them to tell.
Anyways, have a good day. Let's talk about something else next time. Cheers.

Not a very high bar, I know, but given how often That Guy is unapologetic, claims everyone else is the problem, and abuses the patience and goodwill of others until they're left with jaded misanthropy, I'd take a personal apology for their specific misdeeds towards me as genuine.
There is some blame to be shared with the GM, enabling him to be this controlling. But I can respect his patience. He didn't turn it into an explosive confrontation or damage friendships over the game, over one player acting up when they're normally a good person. It's a little too easy to just proclaim that it was all mistakes when it's not your own life experience.

I never thought of doing it in Mutants and Masterminds but I do a predominantly Homebrew 5e campaign with SCPs

That SCP idea sounds awesome, but I think there is a better choice of ttrpg. I never played it myself, but I the Monster of the Week sounds appropriate for SCP.

I gotten in to habit of telling are that guy to shut up when he won’t stop talking over other people or when he take more than 6 sec to say something in a round of combat. You have to be firm in your no and your shut downs. If there a good person they will back off and realize what there doing.

Now see, if someone in our group started acting this way, they'd have been ejected from the game at least by the end of the first session. And they'd be lucky if it wasn't literal.
