- We're reviving our rat rod racing lawn mower! We chopped and modified this lawn mower almost two years ago by swapping pulleys for more speed and slamming it for better handling. We parked it because it kept shredding belts, so we're bringing it back to put a horizontal shaft engine on it. First, we're getting it running in it's vertical shaft, 5 speed transaxle form for one last ride.

No 420 no torque converter
CarsandCameras you should build a lawnmower with suspension on the front and rear then you should put a 670 engine on it off-road is tires and maybe make it a mud mower or an off-road mower

The shifting alone makes that thing sweet. I wish my cars and trucks shifted like that! What about a chain drive clutch where the belt torque converter is now? Chain drive with idlers and a cover, that's my vote.
I guess you got to install a sequential gearbox to make your cars shift like that... But they probably costs a few thousand dollars

Those were called "crashboxes". That was before they invented synchronizers. In the 50s and early 60s they used an upgraded version in F1 with dogs on the gets like motorcycles use even today. Some form of that is how modern racecar transmissions work today.
Survey says......keep the engine, fix / replace/ modify transaxle and overcome the belt shredding. It’ll be fine!!!!

Thank you guys so much for bringing this back! This is what brought me to the channel. When you stopped videos on it I was so disappointed. Please don't go 420 and torque converter. Build a 18hp Briggs opposing twin, or 12hp Briggs singles and you will be cooking with gas then! Glad to see it brought back.

Besides the dragster, this thing is probably my favorite. I've seen people put sprockets on instead of the belt pulleys and run chains instead of a belt. I dont know exactly how they did it but they were stupid fast and very reliable.

chevy 8988 i really want to see them do something with that engine, and this is the perfect project for it, and at least over here in Oregon it’s the same price as the 670

OdefOne The issue with that is not only does it look stupid but lawnmowers are common to crash and if you strap in you will hurt yourself more by not being able to bale out. I see your point but it is actually safer as is.
Edit: A shifter cart seat would be the ultimate answer in my opinion.
OdefOne . I you put a proper seat and harnesses on it you need a full roll cage. That's why proper racing go kart don't have seat belts. So you fall out instead of getting stuck in a rolling go kart with no roll bar.
I didn't say it was necessarily a good idea. It would be something different tho'.

You know something...my yard tractor has a 48 inch wide mower deck, so there is a huge strain on the belt, especially if the grass is a little long. Now...The original belt lasted 5-6 years !..But EVERY belt I've purchased since then...I'm lucky if it lasts ONE summer ! They just don't make belts like they used to ! Great video again guys ! matt.
I had an old Murray mower I drug out if the woods, slapped an 18hp twin Briggs on it did a 3" to 5" pulley to a transaxle from a stand behind commercial mower 5 speed (belt drive horizontal to vertical chain drive) , still used the stock clutch setup, and added a y pipe self fabricated exhaust side pipe to it, slammed it with a 42" live axle go cart axle with golf cart tires with a manual disk brake and custom steering setup, mine went 42mph as well it was super fun your making me want to make another one now I loved mine
I think you guys need a rock guard skid plate combo for that belt and torque converter.

I think the displacement is 708cc you can get a 3 speed oil filled transaxle from surpluscenter.com there a lot better than the grease filled ones

where i live we would fix the mower deck to pull behind it like a trailer (with height adjust on the 2 wheels) and a 5 hp briggs mounted on the mower deck to power the blades, and BANG it's a lawn mower again, you can ride it on the streets.I had one with a 350cc Kawasaki motor, home built car type "A" frame front end / steering, 80 mph mower, 1st gear cutting grass at anyone's house . I used it to mow the 23 costomer's lawns I cared for. When it makes $ , it pays for it's self.

Charlie Norton the advantage in using a go kart axle is that you can set it up more like a go kart and you can use a chain instead of belts. You can also run a disbrake which should allow you to slow down faster.
The rear axle would be set up similar to the rear axle in the rat rod wagon (using the rightangle gearbox).

We jumped a lawnmower 18 feet, so they can definitely handle a jump. The landing is a bit rough though.

i got a mower recently and i discovered that stock it will do a wheelie and i was terrified when i first did it
Like you two, I used to waller around around on the shop floor when working on a project. Laying on the cold, hard concrete, and getting up and down was killing my back. Not to mention the welding sparks that rolled under me on a regular basis. Then I took a hint from from the pro rod shops who use heavy duty build tables so they can work standing or seated. I bought a Harbor Freight hydraulic motorcycle lift, welded some home made extensions to hold a wider project, and life is wonderful again. I use jack stands on top of the table to get some extra hight as well as to get some extra working room under my projects. When I bought mine, several years ago, they were rated at 1200 lbs. The ones they sell today are rated at 1000 lbs. I also made some removable (adjustable) legs from heavy 1" square stock that will hold the work surface steady at my favorite work hight. Put some rollers on your stool /chair and you are set. Enjoy!

Dude, the next time you put acid into a fresh battery, you need to put it on charge for like 15 min and then put the plastic capping strip on, it will literally slide on. It is the proper way to assemble the battery, It will make the lifespan of the battery so much longer.
Keep it verticle shaft and build a belly pan for it...will keep out the debris

This is probably the best fun you can have on the cheap. Labor can be intensive and time consuming but that final product feels good
Nobody wants to see a 420 and torque converter. The thing that makes the mower cool is the transaxle.

Dangit.If you change the drivetrain,it'll be a gocart.Even a painted piece of cardboard as a skid=plate will help save belts.I LOVE this thing.How about just adding a 3" spread to each front axle to stabilize?
BTW..I have looked into the v-twin horizontal myself,for my mower.If I had the $....there ya go..LoL.

I've been building racing mowers for 5 years now for actual racing so I'm extremely partial to mowers I don't consider fx modified to be a racing mower.... It's a go-kart with a mower body at that point

Jaysus, a 670 would shred that thing up. But I suppose that that's what it's there for, to just be a ridiculous lawn mower. Would be kinda cool if you put something with gears on it, because that's one of the things that makes the mower so special compared to your other vehicles. Keep it up guys👍

I totally want to build one of these things. Is there anything to look for when buying a riding mower for that purpose? I'm comfortable with the pulley swap, but lowering it seems like it may be a chore.

I have a race mower that goes 20mph. Not lowered or anything, I would recommend lowering them because the chance of you rolling it is low. I’ve rolled mine once. I recommend getting a tractor with an opposed twin and a 6 speed transaxle or something like that, the more horse the better it is.
I just got a really cheap mower, my boss is giving me a v-twin briggs to put on it! But I also want to know how to lower it as well. Although the people I bought it from put massive tires on the back...
Nolan Patterson I see I see haha, mines kinda like fearlessfront style. Got big lug tires front and back. I’ve always wanted a v-twin but I have a hard time finding one just for the right price, even if it’s used. People want too much for them, even ones that don’t run.
670 it sounds better than a 420 but it would be cool if you could find a replacement transaxle

I love this thing. I'm motivated to start building my old mower now. Its got the same setup as this. I'd try to keep a trans-axle and replace the belt pulleys with sprockets and run 1 or 2 chains instead. It wont drift very good with a live axle. If you go that route I hope you guys turn it into a solid so there no 1 wheel peel carp going on.

I have a mower channel, I wish we could do a compilation. I have a pulley swap Poulan too. Mine is only up to 14 mph. You make me want to go do some more swapping for more speed. Mine is usually in mud. Thanks for sharing.

I've built several mowers similar to this. you can open the transaxle and weld the spider gears for positive traction , you can also flip the transaxle and remount it upside down so the pulleys will line up and you won't need a jack shaft and will stop shredding belts
You guys should make a 4x4 go-kart with SOLID AXLES!!! That would be amazing. Maybe you could use an atv motor and transfer case with atv axles on a go-jart frame. It would be difficult but if theresanybody that could do it it would be you guys. Keep up the good work guys and I hope you give this idea a try!

This needs to happen, 420 up front with the torque converter pointing down, shaft off a few pullys heading to the rear, then a right angle drive right into the transaxle so when you scatter the guts of it you can slap another one in.

Fab a belt cover out of some corrugated plastic sheeting. Lots of factories use them in stacking levels of product onto skids. Easy to find for free. They are also great for tossing down to keep you from lying on the ground when working under cars.
