    Though your video explores the power of human power and corruption perhaps oppression and inequality, the power of memory's is also prelevant in this poem. Do you think I should learn this power? But i doubt AQA asks would ask this(power of memory in last duchess) in my gcses (I've got my exam on the 24th) as I'm assuming the question they ask needs to be accessible to both foundation and Higher tier students so I think they will ask the most prevalent theme in a poem instead of some uncommon theme. What are your thoughts on what I should learn? This is also the case in ur book where it only shows the most prevalent power.

    If you would like you could say the Duke's lack of sexual passion may imply he was inbred as many nobles were at the time and so could say this was a critique on the nobility who often inbred to preserve wealth and family honour

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  Před 2 měsíci

      No. If interbreeding led to nobles having no interest in sex, then such nobles would die out over time. It is both an illogical assumption based on biology, but also based on the poem - nothing in it suggests any kind of interbreeding.

      @Trinity167 Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish Hi sir, thanks for replying,
      However many noble families did die out such as the Hapsburgs that were very well known in Browning's time and they lost their monarchy in Spain in 1700 due to charles II's infertility, which is often credited to inbreeding.
      While this is a unique interpretation I believe it may have been implied, since Poseidon (or Neptune) turned into a horse to r*pe Demeter, his sister and such classical tales were well known in Victorian England as they were part of the school curriculum. Thank you so much for making these videos, I have gone from a grade 6 to very close to a grade 9 in just a few months! Will you ever make a video on the theme of atmosphere in A Christmas Carol?
      I am yet to find a good video discussing it.

    When comparing poems can you analyse the form of one poem and then compare with something else or do you have to analyse form in both poems

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  Před 5 lety +6

      You can do either. If you are already writing at grade 7 you can risk not comparing form directly, but writing about form when you are comparing something else. That will take some serious brain power, which might be tough in exam conditions. So, a good bet is to compare Form in both poems, together if you can.

    • @Trinity167
      @Trinity167 Před 2 měsíci

      One good one is Ozymandias. If this isn't one of your four memorized poems and Ozymandias is (which is a good idea as it links to many of the poems) then you could talk about how both are about how art is used as a demonstration of power and how it degrades and corrupts those in power (Ozymandias becomes arrogant and "Lifeless") however in My Last Duchess it is hinted that the power will last but Ozymandias is all about how power is transient.

    • @Trinity167
      @Trinity167 Před 2 měsíci

      not particularly, its a Greek myth and there isn't a strong connection however you could also say that it is ironic as the most common story of Poseidon creating horses is in order to woo Demeter, another goddess however the Duke makes no effort to woo his wife which is a reminder of how unnatural their relationship is.
