- Jeep's Grand Cherokee isn't just the best selling Jeep, it's also the selling mid-size SUV in America, and it's easy to see why. The Grand Cherokee lineup has something for everyone it seems. There's a base RWD model with a V6 if you're looking for a Ford Edge alternative, or you can get a 2-speed transfer case and 4WD for more rugged terrain. There's a 3-row model if you want to go places a Highlander or Explorer could never dream of, a Trailhawk model if you want to go *some of the places a Wrangler can go in style, and models dripping with wood and leather if you're looking for an American alternative to a Range Rover.

So... Yea.... We accidentally flipped rather than rotated the main camera in the drive section and somehow none of us noticed it...
Hahaha! I thought you were in Great Britain!
It made me anxious when I saw you driving on the "wrong" side of the road.
Driving on the left... in some corner of California that is forever England. So gratifying that the other vehicles obliged by following your example...
Left side driving in Santa Cruz Mountain???? Make sense politically but not the road 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I thought I was going crazy
During the driving scene, Alex decided he was in the U.K. and drove appropriately.
Lol. I was like what happened there. He must have flipped the footage in editing or something and didn’t notice it.
Bahahahhaa
I sold my 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 to buy a 2022 GC Summit Reserve and spent about $30K less. While I loved the look of the LR and it does have a bit more cashe' being a Land Rover, I found the interaction points with the vehicle - the overly flat drivers seat, the steering wheel audio controls not always working, the swing out rear door, etc. made the daily living with the vehicle a challenge. Jeep really stepped up their game with the interior and ride comfort while still maintaining the towing and off-road capability - I simply love the GC.
Would you recommend the 2023 GC. Very similar to 2022 but i was thinking of getting one..
@@kunalaneja2901 After living with the GC for the past 1.5 years and 12,000 miles, I would still very much recommend - I really can't find any fault with it. (and I'm very particular with my vehicles) I've had absolutely no issues. Besides an oil/filter change, no service/maintenance. I have the Summit with the V8 so I can't speak to how the V6 compares, but I'm very pleased.
@@jcrewguy123 Thanks...its hard to get reviews from real owners as these normal youtube reviewers only review driving for short time like an hour..any car will feel good if we test drive for an hour n make a video out of it. Thanks i am most likely gonna get V6 2023 GC. Lets see how it goes and first time gonna buy a jeep product..
@@kunalaneja2901 That is so true - reviews here are good for the "first impressions" and to give you insights beyond what is put out by the manufacturers. The forums, on the other hand, tend to be the vocal ones who have had problems and issues. I'd argue that any brand/manufacturer will have a small percentage of defects and bugs. Jeep hasn't had the best of reputations but I can only speak to my experience. I hope you are happy with your decision and have many trouble-free miles.
@@jcrewguy123 Hi i picked up the new one ..but i was reading about the Forward collision warning system issue online. I just drove once and noticed FCW did not give me progressive warnings as i was approaching the vehicle in front.. is it a jeep thing or what have been your experience
Just such a perfect blend of size, capability, features, luxury, and tech. People often scoff at the price of loaded GCs, but I am quick to remind those that may be unaware: Jeep has been pushing the luxury envelope since the 1993 Limited V8 costing nearly $40K back then. And they've been costly ever since.
Yes, there is indeed a healthy assortment of buyers that could buy a mid-trim X5 or GLE for similar money, but choose the Summit Reserve Jeep. I truly believe that its price point, it is the only vehicle that combines luxury, space, cargo capacity, tech, various powertrains(a few luxury brands don't even offer a hybrid option), first-class interior trappings, towing, and yes, real and true offroading with real-deal 4WD hardware. That is the secret sauce of loaded GCs and always has been.
It's just that this generation really has closed the gap on where mainstream ends and luxury begins.
The previous generation also did that with the Overland & Summit trim levels
@@NileshR12 absolutely. Jeep sold plenty of $60K+ JGCs. Few people are aware of the Summit with the Signature Series interior. It was from that where this WL Summit Reserve drew inspiration.
Ugly. Previous looked like european car. This one looks like 1980s grand wagoneer.
$40k in 1993 is equal to about $80.2k in 2023 just accounting for the inflation.
I thought the Cadillac Escalade had that massive V8 blackwing in it. The complexity of these vehicles is simply mind boggling but never ceases to impress as executed on. Great review!
The American Range Rover...this model jeep has everything!!!!
Jeep please don't stop what you are doing i own 3 Cherokee's because the quality is head and shoulders above the rest.
AMEN
driving portion outside view is reversed, so weird.
I don't think I'd like to buy that option, gives me vertigo..........
@@keitha.9788 Yeah, very disorienting. Hard to read the signs, too.
Surprise! The road portions are actually done in New Zealand!
Crikey, I just noticed the double yellow to the right!
Alex, Should we be alarmed that you are driving on the left side 13:34 of the road? 😉
i thought that too but it's just that the video is flipped for some reason. im not a video maker kinda guy so i dont know why one would need to mirror the b-roll.
Was wondering that too.
@@briano7986 might have been done by accident and not caught. It happens sometimes.
If you need one vehicle to do it all, be your daily driver, be a luxury car, and be a top-tier off-roader, the JGC can do it all at a very high level. "The American Range Rover" is an apt nickname
The real question is: How (un)reliable is it going to be?
@@e6bav8r well seeing all of the quality issues on brand new vehicles from the "most reliable brands", im not sure its fair to pose this simply because this is a Jeep.
I totally agree. The GC leaves very little to the luxury class.
Well I don't know about this 2022 but my 2017 is going strong with about 80k miles on it and I off road mine. The winters here and road are a mess yet my JGC (Overland trim with Off-road package) makes it every time with no fuss.
@@Qugie the WK2 is a legend. With QD II, it is 85% a Wrangler but with a wayyy better ride.
That was a nerve wracking test drive. Because the camera showing the road is reversed and appears like you’re driving on the left side.
So true!
I'm glad you mentioned the You Tube Algorithm. I prefer the longer format with comparisons at the end. Smaller creators I sub to often don't show up in my feed. I wish You Tube would go back to a less formulaic format.
The low profile tire trend really needs to stop on SUV's !
It needs to stop on all vehicles.
Despite the reliability issues Jeep and Stellantis are known for, this is still my favorite American SUV. I had a 2019 Limited X which I traded for a 2021 Limited X when used car prices went crazy. The grand Cherokee is a fantastic mid-size SUV to live with on a daily basis. I can’t speak for the long term reliability but I also couldn’t care less about that when I’m buying the car brand new.
There is no long term reliability for GC. Check their prices with 100k+ miles. My Infiniti suv runs like brand new with 200k miles on it.No repairs, all original to the last bulb, built in Japan.
@@rachelgreen1368 It depends on your preferences. I like the Grand Cherokee and don’t care about the reliability of any car past 100K miles since I don’t tend to keep them that long and I buy new. If you are buying a used vehicle or are good about keeping your cars for a long time (which is much smarter financially too) then a Grand Cherokee shouldn’t be on your list at all. Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti are all much smarter buys.
@@Piketom1 that’s a lie ! Grand Cherokees go for MINIMUM 240k. You absolutely DO NOT need to buy a shitty Honda Toyota Acura or Lexus. U can buy a Jeep and trust it will last the test of time ! Come on now. Don’t you see any old jeeps on the road ?!? They’re not all brand new and those are old cars you see driving aren’t unsold 15 year old cars.
2 things I really dislike about the Grand Cherokee I sat in last week. 1) Piano black plastic. It looks great... for about a week. 2) The rear view mirror created a large forward blind spot for me when I was in my preferred seating position. (I am 6' tall). My wife didn't have an issue with it. I wish they would raise it up higher and possibly put a rear view camera option.
Yeah, the black plastic in the center console was a poor choice IMO and is likely a dealbreaker for me. Bummer that they did that.
My 2020 Explorer mirror does the same thing. I’m 6’0” as well and it creates a blindspot for me and I’ve gotten used to it but it can still be annoying, especially in a large vehicle.
@@DavidSmith-xc2xz clear coat it bro problem solved
Luxury Package in Grand Cherokee has a digital rear view mirror.
Just bought a 2022 4Runner Limited. Very pleased.
I really like the price feature comparisons at the end of your reviews.
Still love my 2014 Overland JGC
I feel like I'm driving in the matrix .. right side and left lol .. I love all the information..
The Mirror effect while driving had me for a moment!
That's a beautiful interior! Unfortunately, I think everything Jeep makes will be unreliable and cost a fortune to keep on the road. A great lease vehicle, but I'm not willing to waste my money.
So you only see new grand Cherokee’s on the road? Stop being spoon fed by people who never owned one. A big loyal following for a crappy car is just not realistic. U can literally spot every gen of grand Cherokee still driving on the road. Or you can waste your money on a Toyota and get a outdated and hardly reliable vehicle because if the hybrid batteries that will need replacement.
@@Natethegreat200c I'm sure some are reliable, I just haven't seen it since the mid 90'. The 4 or 5 people I know that had Grand Cherokees had major issues. I also have friends that had problems with their Jeep Liberty and Compass. My sister is already having issues with her 2017 Jeep Renegade and it only has about 70,000 miles. I spent 6 years working for Autobytel/Car.com and I also sold cars prior to that.
Two people I work with have bought one. One already broke down on the highway with under 1000 miles on it. Had to be towed to the dealer and they spent over 2 weeks working in it.
The other one hasn’t broken yet, but the summit badge was affixed super crooked. Just doesn’t really make you feel too confident in the attention to detail that went into the rest of the car when it managed to leave the factory with “summit” proudly displayed at such a slant it’s obvious from over 100 feet away.
A lease is a waste of money. 😆😆😆
@@Threxx and the Toyota Tundras engines are going to shit. It’s called first model year test dummies buying NEW cars. That’s they’re fault.
Very distracting that the driving video shows traffic on the "wrong"/"UK" side of the road!
Ford never designed the Explorer for off road use from the beginning, so I understand why they didn't give it off road tech. Plus the first two generations of explorer were body on frame because ford used the same platform as the Ranger.
One of the best reviewers! Very detailed.
Yay for making Alex on Autos a truthful title again.
I've got 38k on my Jeep GCL with the 5.7L already, and am averaging 18.0 mpg Mostly around town driving, major metro area
I'll probably replace my Telluride with a JGC L once it's gets the turbo I-6.
I really hope Toyota makes the next 4Runner more competitive to the Grand Cherokee. I know the 4Runner will have a much smaller engine but at least give us a modern interior that is comfortable. I don't think I will ever trust the reliability for any Stellantis vehicle, including Jeep.
Research 2022 Toyota Highlander driveshaft failure and 2022 Toyota Tundra turbo wastewater concerns. There is no such thing as one brand more reliable than the other in a significant manner these days. The next-gen 4Runner will be less reliable than the new one due to the inclusion of the V6 turbo and far upgraded technology packaging.
@@hellkitty1014 thank you. You better teach the brainwashed humans of Scotty land!
I have a current Volvo product and the gloss black drives me crazy. This thing is a SEA of gloss black comparatively. Might be the only thing keeping me from leasing one. I hope Jeep will change it up in the future!
In line 6 isn’t doing the wagoneer any favors, an updated v8 could easily get the 1mpg expected improvement and wouldn’t require premium
Was waiting for this redesign, but I think it will age fast (interior and exterior wise).
How so? Just curious on your finding...
Every time an interior is SO loaded with "new" tech, I have to roll my eyes. It'll all seem very very aged in about 3 years. Personal preference, give me a simpler, but reasonably advanced interior that won't age.
@@hellkitty1014 Exterior-wise, I don't think its body lines look all that good for 2022, let alone 5+ years from now. The rear is neat, but a bit bland and the front looks a little weird to me. I think they will make the grille bigger when they refresh it. Not a fan of the two-tone roof with the chrome, either.
On the interior, the gloss plastic is really cheap looking, the climate buttons, shifter, etc. look dated already. Not a fan of the wood trim, either, but I know it's a staple for the GC; I'd equip it with dark trim.
The previous model lasted a long time and still doesn't look that bad, but I don't see it happening with this new model.
@@novawolverine You nailed it! I've owned 3 WKs because it's a very stylish SUV, albeit showing its age. I'm trying really hard to find the WL visually attractive, but the more I look at it, the more it looks like a funeral hearse from the 1950s. 🫤
Why do you think it will age fast?
Very good SUV. Beautiful interior.
Great stuff Alex. I am currently trying to decide between a 4Runner, Grand Cherokee or Telluride. I wont something that is very off-road capable. My first choice is the 4Runner but I can't seem to get one with the supply issues! On to the next video for comparison. Thanks!
What about a Range Rover?
@@gregjordan5899 I would prefer to keep the price under 55k US. If able maybe closer to 50k.
@@peetfj You probably made a decision, but I'm personally waiting for the next 4Runner which has been supposed to come out forever. Hoping a 2024 model happens otherwise I might just go X5 or something. I wanted this new GC to be it, but it doesn't appeal to me as much as certain trims of the previous generation.
@@novawolverine All reports are saying the 6th gen 4Runner is delayed to 2025.
I have a 2010 4Runner… the first year for the 5th gen. I have been putting off waiting for the 6th gen. I just hit 200,000 and I’m giving up. I can’t wait 2 more years.
I’m making the jump to the Grand Cherokee 4xe. I’m excited for the interior honestly. The 4runner has never gotten the interior treatment that even other Toyotas have gotten, and Toyota is notoriously late to the game with cabin tech. That said, my 4Runner made it to 200,000 with only minor issues.
I’m hoping I don’t regret this, but worst case, I trade-in the Jeep in 5 years and get the 2028 4Runner. Toyota should have their sh*t together by then.
17 MPG? No thanks in 2022.
Boo hoo
yea but with a Sweet V8 sound yea I will take that 17MPG and run with it.
This little runabout's only getting 17 mpg? You'd be better off with a Tahoe.
@@Qugie I rather not spend $120+ at the pump than to listen to the "V8" sound.
There's something terribly wrong in America when the price of a vehicle costs as much as a condo in some parts of our country. Not to mention these "market adjustment" fees at 3-10,000 grand a pop makes no sense.
Love this other than one huge thing. I personally despise the new generations of Jeep products tendency to completely automate the 4WD system. I understand for 99% of customers especially in the GC class that they'll want the fully automatic LR Terrain Response type systems. However I'd far prefer to have the option of something more along the lines of the Selec-Trac system that used to be available in many models and is currently only in the Wrangler, 2WD, 4WD Full Time, 4WD Part Time, and 4Lo together with a manually selectable rear locker.
Cooling area in the front ready for the intercooled Hurricane
Why is the driving footage mirrored?
Alex, did you mention in the video if the jeep has a lane keep assist feature on the highway?
Keep in mind, this is the top trim level costing close to 70K. The "normal ones, "Altitude and Limited" are plastic bombers. Just like the rest of the competition.
Actually I've been in them and much of the interior is the same or similar. You can check out the Laredo trim in my first look video.
Amber blinkers, or red? Thanks for the review! Looking forward to IIHS testing.
Piano black interior already has scratches all over it.
i want an "L" really bad! they look awesome
16:30 and the Rivian, don’t forget the Rivian. This couldn’t hold a candle to an R1S.
Hard to say at the moment to be honest. The R1S looks excellent (our R1T will be here next week so stay tuned) but since it doesn't exist yet we'll have to wait and see.
Driving in the left lane in the US? Lol a little bit of video editing issue perhaps?
Hi Alex....can you view the fam cam on the passenger monitor?
Alex, is your road view cam flipped by 180 degree? I don’t believe you’re driving on the left side…
Why the camera on the driving section (bigger window) is mirrored? Looks like you are in UK
Are you sure about true locker available in this car? Or it will have like wk2 LSD without driver control?
If only there was a small turbo diesel
6cylinder to give you great towing feel
And torque yet still return good fuel economy and good range.
I absolutely love all the gloss black plastic! No I don’t. That’s a deal breaker. It will look like crap in no time. Bad decision by Jeep.
If I got one, which I probably won't because the 2023 Palisade is insane, I'd spend the $250-$300 to put a clear coat on all that stuff, which takes care of that.
How can the Cherokee have more combined legroom than the Grand Cherokee (7: 12) Anyway the Jeep always been tight on interior space and it hurts that the Outback has more interior room. The Santa Fe Palisade is light years away or at least 7 inches which is really huge where everyone else is within a fraction of an inch of each other. 0-60 at 6.4 in the V-8 is disappointing and I hope the new V6 will be much faster. Get your 60,70.80K and go get one with the gadgets you like
Go Toyota!
I am a big fan of V8 engines; my current car has one and I love it. But with gas at $8.3/gal I can't wait to see if the new I6 engine that will likely have similar power ratings as the Hemi while having much better fuel economy because a Grand Cherokee V8 is just not in my future.
If this forthcoming inline 6 (presumably to be turbo/electrified) is as powerful as the V8, why would it be any more fuel efficient in real world use? Internal engine thermal efficiencies will be similar. It might get better fuel economy on the artificial government test cycle, but as soon as you tap into that turbo boost, say goodbye to improved fuel economy. Leave our V8’s alone as long as market demand supports them.
@@TKPorsche Overall engine efficiencies have actually improved considerably; it is not just about thermal efficiencies. Lighter (considerably?) engine, dual injection (?) and less friction will make a difference.
Obviously if you tap 100% in the same HP but that is not what I am talking about. Also I owned a V8 Grand Cherokee, did you?? Didn't know that 2 of my vehicles were yours... A bit pretentious of you.
@@benhaze1010 Longevity. V8 should outlast the I6 tho with both being well maintained. The I6 has far more internal pressure with DI on top of the turbo. Don’t forget carbon build up the V8 is far less prone to. More moving parts and new tech from a notoriously questionable reliability history at Chrysler/Stellantis. There’s a market for the V8.
@@BarcelonaBlitzer I hear you. I currently havbe a V8 with both port and dirtect injection so it should be good to go for a long time and is much more efficient than the Hemi.
The Chrysler Pentastar V6 engine turned out to be one of the best V6 engines on the market, extremely reliable so sometimes Chrysler can be surprising.
I6 are inherently better balanced engines and very interesting design wise.
@@benhaze1010 Yeah I’m hoping they have another success in the new Hurricane as they did with the Pentastar 3.6. I’m just concerned that from what I’ve seen it is solely DI on top of the turbo so it has to be engineered well for all that pressure.
I was excited that we would return to the respected longevity of the straight 6 4.0 days, but we’ll just have to see.
Alex, How come Jeep Cherokee is listed as having more combined legroom as the Grand Cherokee?
How can the Cherokee have more combined legroom than the Grand Cherokee (7: 12) Anyway the Jeep always been tight on interior space it hurts that the Outback has more interior room and the Santa Fe Palisade is light years away or at least 7 inches which is really huge where everyone else is within a fraction of an inch of each other
Is this the 1st 'F' for fuel economy you've handed out? Haha! Great overall vehicle, but just too expensive, and so many competitors from the affordable end (Santa Fe) and high end (X5).
It would be nice to have lower trim reviews because this trim needs a mortgage to buy
Alex do you prefer this or the new X5 overall?
They should have made this two row model available only with the V6. A vehicle this small doesn't need a V8. From a marketing standpoint, this would have encouraged more buyers to opt for the more expensive three row model. And why does this thing weigh over 5,000 lbs?
Is there a way to not have all that gloss black plastic?
They sell dash kits online with wood looks or carbon fiber look. Stick on, with 3m adhesive. Also, many car places that do complete car wraps will do it for you…….whatever look you like.
All of the manufacturers are doing it, unfortunately. Some tastefully, some extreme. I don't like any of it.

@@hellkitty1014 unfortunately they didn't not with this new generation nor With Wk2. The previous generation trailhawk was advertised with underbody protection. Which is not entirely true. 8:23 Don't care for the Quilted Northern TP as an interior design of my highly over priced car!
I checked out one at the local dealership.. I still don’t get why its called “luxurious.” It’s not roomy enough for a vehicle of it’s size, AND the interior materials are flimsy. My little Subaru Forester has more room and better materials.
Someday we will get to a point where people realize that shiny black plastic sh@t doesn’t equate with luxury. It’s actually about the cheapest form of trim the manufacturer can use.

Um isn't Jeep owned by FIAT? FIAT isn't an American company.
Just because it’s owned by fiat doesn’t make it bad
They're tecnically based in Amsterdam, a little weird since none of the companies were based there. I suppose that made in uncontroversial once Peugeot was merged into it. The French would have been upset if it were based in Italy, and the Italians if in France. Most Americans didn't care much where the HQ staff was. They still have factories here that make most of their vehicles, the Renegade excepted. It's based on a Fiat/Alfa platform and made in Italy.

One simple word describes all Stellantis products: garbage.
Honestly I think it's pretty ugly compared to the previous generation. The front end is just not it lol
The exterior loos scrawny and cheap. Interior is better done if they hire a proper designer. Other than how much it can tow, hard to get aroused by it
