I'll add one : just look around yourself in your everyday life. It works so well with post apocalyptic fiction because the whole point of this genre is to be deeply rooted in our world, to repurpose it, to explore it from a new angle. Cards are reshuffled. Things, places and (more importantly) people lose their original function and status to become something entirely different, all the while being a reminder of their previous role.
So you're walking down the street and ask yourself "what if it was post apoc now?"
The nice iron fence with spikes on top around that classy suburban house becomes the makeshift bumper of a zombie hunting truck. The DIY aisle of that boring supermarket becomes an armory that you imagine yourself gleefully raiding after monthes of unsuccessful scavenging. Trafic signs become the scattered idols of a weird animist cult, adorned with crucified sacrificial victims. That power pylon atop the hill begs to be repurposed as a watchtower around which a small community may develop. They could scavenge the copper from the power lines and the glass insulators could be melted to make stylish googles for everyone (everyone needs googles otherwise it's not post apoc right?).
You're at work and start thinking you could easily turn that guillotine paper cutter into a makeshift machete. Then you're imagining your balding, unpleasant boss, driven mad by the loss of his beloved family, wielding two of them and leading a roving band of office raiders, clad in a business suit reinforced with riveted steel plates. They would hunt down tattooed people so they can eat their flesh and make stylish ties out of their skin.
You cannot be uninspired when thinking like this, stories just write themselves. At some point it becomes a second nature, like a program always runing in the background.
Just be curious and learn how things (from small items to whole societies) work. Typing in "post apocalyptic" into a search engine is so limiting, when you have the whole world to play with.

Hearing you say that the first project is throwaway and to treat it as such, and to not overthink really helped

Creator's Block is something any artist has to deal with, be you a costumer or prop builder, but also an author or songwriter,. This video is a good guide for anybody in the former category. :D

I would just add something that might seem obvious, but sometimes the most obvious things can slip the mind - when you're making a costume based on something else and you look for inspirations, don't look only at other people's interpretation of that idea, but at the OG thing as well. For instance - when doing a postapo pirate, don't just look at "postapo pirate", but at regular pirates, at historical and modern ones, at futuristic artworks of such, at naval officers both historical and modern, look at real historical pirates, at pop-culture representations of such, look at fishermen, and so on and so forth.
When looking for inspirations to that particular costume look at everything surrounding that topic.

This is all good BUT it's very much not how I'd do it ever. I draw everything 1st and all my ideas come from my head really and I like just make them and redraw etc and end up with what I wanted but better.

I still dont agree with throwing anything away... slot of failed projects I have found to become new successfully ones if you take them and learn to repurpose them. ONE INSTANCE. MY first pardon failed and I turned into a side pouch.
