  • The famous Kenai River has thousands of Sockeye Salmon swimming up the river each day in July. On July 22nd, a Saturday, proved to be the busiest day of the year which is when this video was filmed. The combination of the decent fish counts and the weekend brought all of the Alaska Residents to the Kenai River to "Dip-Net" their fish out of the river for their winter supply.

    LMAO "combat" dip netting. I prefer dipnetting from a boat. Every summer for years we got our limit and canned them up. Down by the mouth, when a school would rush the sand bar it looked like popcorn popping. Had one leap right into our boat once. What fun!

In my family, not a bit of it goes to waste and then to supplement for the rest the year by gardening, rabbits, chicken, fishing halibut and some caribou. I know where my food comes from and I respect the environment of which I harvest from. Harder than you think. Especially in places like fish creek which is where I primarily dip net. 48 salmon this year. Was a good time and have plenty of smoke salmon jared and frozen that will last till next season.

  • @oldbaldfatman2766
    @oldbaldfatman2766 Před 3 lety +1

    Sept. 8, 2020---Never fished that part of the Kenai. Was stationed at Elmendorf 77-79 with my buds and I hitting 2 different sections of that river. I'd never used a fly before, so all of this was new to me. Was told you could feel the difference between the weight bouncing on the river bed vs when a salmon took it. Bump, bump, bump...nothing. Repeat as long as you want. They got their fish and it was time to go to another section. Man, I was getting bummed out, but also pissed.
    There's two things about the 2nd part of the river: there was a cable strung across it, with a small barge attached to it and think it cost something like $2 for a round trip. Now I'd of been happy to fish one side, but apparently, the salmon only came up on the other side, so I paid my fare. There was also a sign just up river saying no fishing past this point. One guy made the mistake of casting his fly past this sign and then this guy writes him a ticket! Yeah, game warden.
    I figured 8-10lb salmon, use 10lb fishing line.....lost THREE fish who broke my line. Eventually, FINALLY caught mine and after that, had no trouble catching others on future trips. Ended up buying dyed fur squirrel
    tail fur and everything else to make my own flies. Made 'em on my time off and had about fifty made just in case I lost any due to rocks or possible broken fishing line which I ended up going to 20lb test. Thing is, others would find themselves out of flies (but not my buds) and I ended up selling each fly for $5. Looked it up and it equals $19 in todays money. Considering I made these flies for about 50 cents each, that was one hell of a mark up and I usually sold at least a dozen per trip to people.
    One Japanese couple was there one time and she caught a Dolly Varden about 10lbs and was going to let it go because it wasn't a salmon. I told her she could keep it AND still catch a salmon as she had the licenses for both. They were quite happy to find this out. Another time, we're returning to the other side where our cars were at when some woman REALLY casted out her fly. Of all things, she some home snagged the barge runners hand, where the web area between the thumb and finger. She's SCREAMING I got one, I got one and as for that guy, you KNOW he was doing some screaming himself and it WASN'T I got one. He pulled out his knife and cut the line.
    Afterwards, it was time to clean those fish and into the other cooler they went. Had 3-4 smokers that the guys had in the barracks and they'd be smoking for a good number of hours while we're at work. Nothing like getting off work, munching on smoke salmon, drinking beer and bs'ing with your buds.
    Thanks for bringing back the memories.
