  • Joey, Cooper, and Matt went to Kenai, Alaska to fish for Sockeye Salmon (Reds) at the mouth of the Kenai River with huge nets called dip nets. Commonly called "dipnetting" is a form of fishing available to Alaskan residents. We fished on the south beach at the mouth of the Kenai River. As the tide comes in and out, the fish flow with it. We take our large nets and put them in the water. When a fish swimming by goes into the net you drag it back to shore with the fish inside.
Dipnetting license allows for 25 fish for the household leader and an additional 10 fish for every household member after that. Between the three of us we had a total of 115 salmon to catch! We had four days of fishing to try and reach our limit! We did not quite meet our goal this year, but came awfully close with a combined total of 93 fish.
We ride down the beach to where we fish on a side by side. We bring with us filet knives, table, coolers, and fresh water. Once we catch a fish we gut it and place it on ice. When the fishing slows down between tides we take the opportunity to filet the fish, de-rib the filets, clean them with fresh water, and place them on ice. Once we return to camp we rinse the fish one more time and pat them dry. We cut them down to smaller sizes and use vacuum sealers to keep the meat clean and sealed until ready to be eaten. The filets then go into a freezer with ice until we return home, split up the haul, and load our garage freezers up!
Enjoy as we take you along with us to the mouth of the Kenai River in Alaska to dipnet for Sockeye Salmon. Experience our side by side ride down the beach, catching salmon, and processing the fish to be ready for the freezer. One of the many incredible experiences and opportunities Alaska gives us to sustain our family with fresh wild meat away from the grocery store.
