  • Here you will learn the cause of the car wont stay on unless you keep giving it gas problem. The mustang has a 650 double pumper holley carburetor and the only way that the car stays on is if i keep giving it throttle. The moment i stop pumping the pedal it dies. idle screw adjustment doesn't work, and will only start good and dies right after. The adjustment made was to the transfer slot on the bottom end of the carburetor. This adjustment pertains to all holley carbs and the other carbs like edelbrock all have a smiliar idea behind how it all works. If you have any further issues that you would like for me to help you troubleshoot, feel free to drop a comment and i will do my best to answer the questions for you.

Nice job I believe I have the same issues with the secondary idle slot.

Would this apply on a vacuum secondary Holley as well?

    Hidden secret there. Great info.

Turn up the idle screw to 750 rpm, the transition circuit was out of adjustment.

If the fuel gauge is correct, might want to add some gas. And love the old school eq

What size screw driver did you use to adjust the transverse slot

i dont know what size that would be. To be honest with you i have a ton of screwdrivers but their size has never been common knowledge size they are never labeled. But the flat is about 1/8 of an inch wide.

make sure you dont have any vacuum hoses cracked. disconnect your brake booster hose and plug it up to make sure you dont have an internal booster leak. Plug all ports on the carburetor with the little rubber caps. check your needle to make sure its not stuck closed not letting fuel into one of the fuel bowls. These are all things to look for. make sure the gasket under the carb is in good shape too because this will cause unmetered air to enter under the carb causing poor idle as well. Hope this helps

@@EddiesCustomsandRestorations yea i have the booster blocked rite now i have put new mounting gaskets on the intake pulled intake and put new gaskets there too have pulled it apart a few times and checked my floats are exactly were they should be /new fuel pump also the car sat for the winter then this issue happened i am thinking if something got plugged in the idle circuit ..when it dies it won’t start unless i give it a couple of pumps to the throttle never had such a stupid issue with a edelbrock 🤬🤦🏻‍♂️runs when i rev it good just no idle i am just lost on it brand new carb

@@maniacmachanic9870 have you blown compressed air through all the idle circuit holes? One thing you can do is spray soapy water into the holes to where you fill them up and then slowly blow compressed air into it and make sure you see the soapy water exit on the opposite end of the idle circuit just to make absolute sertain that they are not clogged. This is just a way for you to actually see the water coming out the other end. Afterwards make sure you clean the soapy water out with some carb cleaner or gas to not leave that in there.

@@EddiesCustomsandRestorations i have pulled the idle mixture screws and blew air in there a couple of times no results i need to pull the carb and check it out again going to try what your saying with soapy water and blow out all the ports in the carb with air
      Thanks for the help

@@maniacmachanic9870 yea just so you can actually see the stream coming out the other end when you put soapy water through it. Sounds silly but it allows you to see the stream without fail. Check your plugs to make sure they arent all black and fowled up. That will cause poor ignition and can also behave sort of the same way tonwhere under acceleration it will stay on because the spark fires are firing faster to where it can over power the fowl but at slow ignition its too slow and not enough. Ive seen it. Doesn't hurt to check them.
