The Battle for Madrid, 1936 (filmed/animated on location)

- This Spanish Civil War mini history documentary was filmed & animated in Madrid. The Spanish Civil War is fascinatingly complex. That’s why I’ve decided to explain the Battle/Siege of Madrid between 1936 & 1939 using animation and original footage I shot in Madrid. To understand the two sides during the Spanish Civil War (the Nationalists and the Republicans), it helps to reduce the conflict down to the city level. I hope having it explained this way is helpful for you! Feedback welcome as always.

This video isn’t advertiser friendly! Thanks CZcams! :/ For those who want to support:
Please hit the notification bell if you want to be updated every time I post a deeply researched political & historical exploration. This video took me 150 hours of research, writing, animation, filming, and editing. If that’s something that appeals to you, hit that bell! I appreciate the support of my dedicated fans, without whom I would have given up a long time ago.

Political Junkie Not advertiser friendly?
Shzh Shsh Anything even remotely controversial can get monetization removed
Advertisers checklist a bunch of things that they don't want their ads appearing on, like war, political stuff, rape, hate speech, etc. And in turn CZcams cuts the revenue of any videos that feature anything related to anything that's even been on a single advertiser's checklist.
I'm sorry CZcams is so shit
Political Junkie Yes! Yes! deeply researched stuff is my thing! Liked Subscribed Belled etc
I wish I had seen this video before I went to Madrid. I would have enjoyed walking around with the knowledge you presented in this excellent video. I was evening staying in Lavapiés! Brilliant video. I can't the amount of work this must have taken.
Looks like you'll have to go back!
Lucky me I'm heading to Barcelona next week
My half of my family is Spanish. Walking by the Puerta de Alcala and seeing it riddled with bullet holes and machine gun fire is always a reminder of the siege for the city
Man, I just moved Spain a couple of months ago and I can see how this events are still alive in the country. People are scared of politics and don't want to lean neither to the left nor to the right because of fears of being called republican or a "Facho". Yet those who are invested in politics are quite extreme. I've seen old men talking about how Franco was the best thing to ever happen to Spain but at the same time I've seen republican parades across the streets of Malaga. Is sad yet fascinating.
facha* hahahaha, and yes, it's still present in the society, the actual spain is the directly resoult of the civil war, and of the 40 years of dictatorship, a 'democracy' ruled by the party that was created by franco's ministers and his dictatorship defensors, the left in spain, but, it's not the same that the left of the civil war, they are now more much moderated than before, and the right has been influenciated by the dictatorship, in the republic were people of right that were republicans, now this is impossible to imagine, all the rights support the kings (sorry for my english xd)
Sara Skywalker Even if Spanish Civil War may have been a tragic period in our history, it's not more "actual" than WW2 is for the rest of Europe or the US, for example (the Spanish Civil War is even older). In the early 1936 we were one of the richest country in the world and Europe. We passed a disastrous war that destroyed our country and then a dictatorship with no freedom in which economy didn't rise as well as the democratic countries (as Japan or Western Germany that were destroyed during WW2 but quickly recovered) were doing at that moment. However, the other option we had then, the "democratic" republic (which would soon fall to the URSS interests in a couple of years for sure, maybe if the civil war never happened we may have fought in WW2 as communists) wasn't way better. Do not pay attention to those who tell you than one side was much better than the other. Both of them were bad and both committed crimes, even if the Republic was legitimately democratically elected, it fell in extremisms too. There's was not good option then.
But we recovered from that as time passed, even if we did it too late (since democracy was reintroduced in 1975). Maybe we are not the globally powerful country we could have been, we aren't Germany or France, but we are relatively close, we are a modern and prosperous democratic nation. Nowadays people's political majority opinion are much more moderate (even if some radical parties has risen a bit as it has actually happened with Trump in the US or Le Pen in France, but here they've still not won, but that's not comparable as the situation of true radicalism we had in 1936). Actually our differences are forgiven. I consider myself a centrist and I have friends who vote for the left and for the right, and we discuss it respectfully as any other countries' people may do ;)
hahaha the richest
Sorry, but what you wrote there is a big lie wirten by a spanish centrist (so part of the power). The dictatorship and the civil war are very on spains day to day because the same people is governing us now as they did with the dictatorship. Same things are valued as the most important for the nation (as the national unity). The only posible solution for spain should be some kind of nuremberg trials (as to not have policemen that did alot of tortures with medals and invited to parties in police oficces) or a complete desitegration of the spanish state into the nations that exist inside itself
You are so right.
I'm Spanish and I must say that this is a very good work about our civil war. Well detailed, nicely explained... I really enjoyed it (:
How good is his Spanish? It does not sound too bad to me but Spanish is a second language to me. And even then it's Cuban Spanish so I don't know if the weird twang I hear is his bad Spanish or my colonial corruption of the language.
@@ieuanhunt552 he speaks good Spanish but he has an English American accent, for example when he says "fascismo" he pronounces it as "fashismo" in Spanish from Spain this is pronounced as "fasthismo" (as in "thick") in Latin America it'd sound similar to "fassismo" or "fas-sihmo" depending on the accent.
But again for a non native speaker he's really good
@@ieuanhunt552 The lisp/ceceo is more or less confined to Spain. Using the lisp is neither proper nor improper but simply a dialect.. he does have English accented Spanish but the previous poster saying his Spanish is improper sin el ceceo is silly. Spanish speakers around the world dropped the lisp pretty quick. His Spanish sounds good to me. He will be understood and what else is there?
You're doing great work man! I hope youtube will come to their senses and realise that it is thought out, researched and smart work like yours that makes it great :D Warm greetings from a political science student from the Netherlands
+lukecornNL greetings! Best of luck with your studies!
Thats what CZcams supposed to be. A f@cking learning experience. Thank you so much.
Some people have the ability to be biased yet accurate. You, my friend, are one of those.

Truly excellent work, top notch source material (cannot go wrong with Beevor), and the on-location shots really brought it together. Highly recommended.

Your now one of 2 (out of a few hundred subscribed channels) that I have the notification bell on.
Seriously, thanks for being interesting.
Don't get too burned out please. I look forward to your posts.
I am speachless and moved by your video. A great piece of work indeed. You have a new suscriber. Greetings.
Well done! Love this explanation!
This was great! Knew next to nothing about this interesting and tragic piece of history. Thanks!
Holy shit, this video was incredible Will. I loved the animated battle scenes. The story about the tombstone was incredibly chilling but also offered that hopeful glimmer of hope and nostalgia, wonderful way to end the video. I honestly had never learned about the Spanish Civil War before and this video served as an amazing introduction. Fabulous job!!
love the work , The Spanish Civil War is definitely one of the most interesting . Best video so far .
This is a great video man. Good job. I'm liking your stuff.
Gladly hit the bell, your videos are very interesting to see, and as a former history-student (it's more then just a hobby for me) I really like how detailed these videos are. Keep up the great stuff!
Excellent video, really good and informative, I knew the basics since I’m a Spaniard from Madrid but the video was fairly detailed. 👌🏼
Great work as always man, your dedication to thorough research is a service to all your viewers. I appreciate your maintenance of an objective view while also managing to bring in personal interpretations appropriately. Great great work.
AtticusDragon thank you, Atticus . I do my best to take in as much info as I can and paint the parties as fairly as possible
im loving this channel at the moment!
I think that this video is explained so deeply and shortly that is fantastic, and also has a very good shooting. Hope u do more 😊
As always, I've found this video fascinating. The fact that democracies didn't want to get involved in the Spanish Civil War makes it impossible to not feel a bit forgotten. Also people usually don't realize that this war was the training for WWII, no doubt. So yeah, thanks for making this videos!
As always, a very interesting watch 👍🏽
Great work, congrats!
Fantastic, very informative. Thank you.
Being in Madrid now and watching this video, makes me look completely different at the different sites. Awesome work done on the video!
FANTASTIC video, amazing content and quality. It blows my mind that you don't have millions of subscribers yet, but don't worry, that's bound to change soon.
That was very well done.
amazing work !
Chilling, great video man.
+Kagan good to have you here, Kagan

Hey man,
Great video! Please Don't let CZcams take away your passion.. Keep up the good work! You are one of the view people on here who really do their research and It would be a shame to see you have to stop...Greetz from the Netherlands
That was a nice video!
Superb documentary explaining some very complicated politics. I have read pretty much everything Antony Beevor has written and always wanted to read his book on this subject.
This is the best, and simplest, explanation of what the Spanish Civil War was all about that I have seen. Thank you.
Well done!
Outstanding! I lived for years in Madrid and had little idea of most of this - you’ve really brought the history to life! Now I can’t wait to get back to visit all these places again! Thanks
Btw it’d be awesome to see a similar video about some of the other battles like Guadalajara / Alcalá, Segovia, El Mazuco / Sierra del Cuera ...
This is actually one of my favorite channels
great video, you have earned yourself a sub!
Your content is beyond well researched and super polished. I absolutely love the animations and your narration of these historical events. I am sorry that CZcams doesn't like this video, but if you remain strong and keep up your work, you will do really really well.
Subbed since the berlin wall video. Loved you since.
Excelent video, congratulations!
Great job, this is a super controversial topic and it was explained perfectly. No one can deny anything you said. Congrats and keep up the good work.
Amon Ra found the nazi
This was fantastic, thank you
+Timothy Hunter thanks for watching, Timothy!
good job, I wish the best to you!
Great video, congratulations!
This video was fantastic. The detail, the script, the pacing and the overall professionalism really had me gripped. I honestly knew nothing of the Spanish civil war other than it happened at that Pan's Labyrinth was set during it, this video alone has made me want to learn more. Where do I start? Keep up the good work
great video man.
really nice!

+Metalman 94 this comment is too real.
I only just found your channel - but i've been watching for a few hours (instantly subscribed). This video was epic - i loved the way you made it and i found it very exciting to watch :-)
I've always felt that the Spanish Civil War gets forgotten about in history, but this was a great way to tell a part of the story.
+Mads Hinrichsen hours?! Wow. Thank you for taking that time and watching the videos. That's really exciting to hear.
And yeah. Having lived a couple years in Madrid, it was easy to become passionate about the subject and make the video something special (to me at least)
Absolutely LOVE these videos.
Just out of curiosity, any plans on the battles up to the unification of the Holy Roman Empire? I find it a heavily underrated topic, as it was integral to the foundation of the Papacy, which gets the most coverage IMO.
But do take your time! CZcams needs and deserves your content, despite its crappy algorithm!
Alex cool idea. I've added it to my list of topics
amazing vid i loved it so much
+john marston I'm glad, john! Thanks for watching

+Professor Quirrell thank you, professor!

Quite apolotical and historically correct video. Thank You, I've really enjoyed it!
I wanted this video years ago. Now that I've visited Madrid it feels so much more real.
amazing video!
+Flazam thank you :)
inspirational research from someone so young, I wish I was as good in my own field, but I'm working on it
only 5 min in and i had to pause and comment. pls keep doing these youre an exceptionally talented educator/youtuber and deserve massive respect.
+Nick Birkas that's a very nice thing to say, and I'll definitely keep it up! Comments like yours are very motivating
Yes your well informed I'm rather enjoying it. But pls move more to the center. I understand with our current bias in our educational institutions that nationalist are always bad. But the republicans where really democratic republic.
Wow great video i love political and military history, amazing channel

-Will
