  • How to drive a manual car in start, stop traffic - www.driving-school-beckenham....
How to do clutch control? It's a common question If you're learning to drive a manual / stick shift car. One challenge to overcome will be to master clutch control in traffic uphill. It's quite common for a new driver on their driving lessons to worry about rolling back into a vehicle behind or stalling.
In this video we look at how to do hill starts and use clutch control to creep slowly in stop, start traffic. You'll probably cover this on one of your driving lessons but hopefully this video will help you visualise what to do and help you remember what to do.

I'm from the Netherlands, flat as a pancake, and now living in Ireland. Dutch people are generally bad at driving uphill since we literally never have to do it. @@gamesmaster1060 I'm not sure about fuel efficiency but I do feel quickly applying the gas after the biting point is the right way. I have tried to follow the tip suggested in the video and have to admit it's quite tough to master(keeping the right foot ever so lightly still on the gas then lifting the clutch with the left foot to the biting point) and yes I'm someone who learnt on a diesel car that shoots forward with only half clutch.
Also I feel this method will change how one starts their vehicle be it on a plain ground or on a hill. On plains I find one can pull away without any gas. Gas after bite is applicable to all situations.

@@mandeep1413 Diesels are much easier in that respect of clutch before gas. I learned in a diesel. Petrols stall easier but its not to say that you cant do it, because you can, but there is less leeway so some may find it harder on petrols at first.
I've picked up the bad habit of holding the footbrake on a hill instead of applying the handbrake, then just before moving off, i find the biting point and then off the footbrake to the gas to pull away, and thats on a petrol.

Very good video! I first passed my test in an automatic so ive found it harder to get back into using a clutch. I passed in a manual in january this year, but I do in situations such as stuck in traffic on a hill struggle with clutch control. Thanks for your time

I’m in Canada and picking up my first manual car in 3 days. My brother, who has a manual, is coming to give me some lessons before I pick up my new car. I’ve been so nervous about hill starts, thank you for the calming lesson in hill starts and clutch control. I’m feeling less nervous now.

~I am Indian. We've got ill disciplined drivers in India. Suppose there is a traffic signal uphill and vehicles stop to a red. Countdown begins from let's say 60. When it's counting down 7...6...5 etc.. drivers behind starts blaring horns at full volume. Beginners get panic and stall.
~Another observation is roundabout. There aren't many roundabouts here. But in those that we have people don't know how to drive. They think vehicles on the main(broader) road gets priority no matter what. Even I came to know about proper roundabout rules from self research.
We are a light year behind you in driving culture. But these driving videos are both knowledgeable and refreshing. Thank you. Subscribed.

Tho i beleive you're using a diesel car which fairly easy to drive compared to a petrol ones (in traffic ofc) , so please if possible it would be nice to make the same video as this one but in a petrol car ,cheers.

My first time to leave message but this one is really good, you can see lots of how to stop and how to start instead just talking. I'm not a learner but i drove automatic since i got a licence. I've watched many videos from last 6-8 years. a reason made this one good is he drove in city. clever and good.

My Driving Instructor is teaching me differently with regards to Uphill Moving from a Stagnant Position; Step 1. Clutch In, Step 2 Shift to Gear 1, Step 3 Release Clutch up to Biting Point/Car Vibrating, Step 4 Press the Gas Pedal up to Refs 2 and once the car dips you very slowly release the Handbrake.

I learn to drive by myself without anyone teaching me and i was happily driving for more than two months and considering myself a professional driver now but after coming to a heavy traffic uphill i lose all my confidence because i feel like i might hit the other car behind so here am i to learn clutch control in uphill drive. Now finally hope that i can get back on track in any traffic whether up or down with ease☺️😁

Thanks for this I have been struggling with leaving my building parking lot as the gate opening Remote Tag is up hill, I was struggling with clutch control and when opening the gates, they always close before I can drive out and I often have to reverse back as I block other drivers from going out, it requires lots of practice for sure💪

A good tutorial on driving a standard transmission in a city. I learned how to drive a standard transmission in Toronto when few a stick shifts around . Automatics transmissions were an added cost. I think if there were more instructions like this in Canada there would be more on standards in use. Now a days it seems that all cars come with automatics. I found standard transmissions were better for driving in the snow. Standard transmission car could be rocked back and forth to get unstuck.

    I'm still new to manual.
Just a few hours ago I parked my car on a hill in reverse.
First attempted I stalled but quickly recovered and parked it fine.
I just came here to get more of an understanding how manuals work on hills.
Your videos so far are very useful.
I'll keep that in mind when I go out to drive my car again

I passed my test in November last year, uphill starts are still one of those things I’m not great at. I’m a lot better but sometimes finding the balance is awkward especially as my car is petrol and the one I learnt is was diesel. That shouldn’t matter but I prefer a low clutch that a diesel offers. So thanks for this video as it refreshes my memory from when I was learning! 👍

Maybe you can give me some tips 😂 just passed my test. Currently trying to get used to my new car which has a much higher clutch compared to my learning car. When on a hill I could stop the car dead still by just finding the bite not even using the handbrake unless I was there for a while. Don’t even think I was giving it gas just literally holding the bite so the car doesn’t roll back. Can’t seem to do it in my new car 🤷‍♂️ I’m finding the bite but then it’s stalling so maybe I just need more bite? Any tips haha
