    Just started driving manual, and I've been struggling to get into first gear smoothly at stop signs and red lights. Even though this video talks about start/stop traffic, the lesson about riding the clutch at low speeds helped me find the bite point and finally get into first gear properly without stalling. Thanks a bunch mate, I can drive my car without the anxiety of other people waiting on me now.

    Although I've been driving for 10 years, a vast majority of automobiles in the US are equipped with an automatic transmission, so when I recently bought my first manual car I've had to essentially re-learn how to drive. • @DominicDarrell
      @DominicDarrell Před 2 lety +17

      @@akunog3665 Honestly after getting comfortable driving a manual, I don’t even think about it anymore. It’s just as easy as driving an automatic. The only differences are that everything feels more precise and controlled. I don’t have to fight with the automatic for more power, or wait for it to realize I want a lower gear. When I want to speed up, I can manually select the gear I’ll need, all without thinking. It’s also safer because you’re less likely to be distracted while driving, and you can utilize engine braking… however both legs get tired in traffic, not just one lol but that’s so worth the extra fun and control you get from a manual.

      Quoting you from the video:
      "What you need to understand is that when you lift the clutch to the bite point the car will continue to accelerate, you don't need to keep lifting the clutch higher to accelerate. Holding it in the same place on the bite point and the car will get faster and faster."
      And this is what I've been struggling to make students and their parents understand so they can start to learn how to drive manual cars properly. They tend to have this misunderstanding that the clutch needs to be raised higher and higher, to the point where it can't go higher, and even lift the foot off the clutch before shifting to second gear which is just horrendous.
      My original comment was a compliment to you for pointing this out, and explaining it beautifully. Well done, very well done!

    I had my second ever lesson yesterday, and I'm struggling a little with steering correctly and quickly for corners and keeping the car straight in the roads. And I had to deal with people driving very closely to the back of me, and using clutch in traffic made me anxious because I was worried about the people who were extremely close to the back of me.

      If you're on your second lesson, go easy on yourself, expect to do plenty of things wrong. Accept you will annoy others, that's what happens when you learn yo drive, don't let it bother you. Or at least, try your best not to let it bother you.

    This is a much better way to learn then how I was taught. For new manual drivers there's a tendency to get overwhelmed easily. This lesson is nice and relaxed, with good explanation on the what's and why's.
    Only thing I would suggest is pointing out that sometimes you have to ride the clutch like that, but it does add wear, so it's best to avoid doing that say at a stop light when you're waiting for the light to turn green. Just do it when you really need to.

      I remember when my dad taught me to drive a manual. He brought home a Mazda B2300 6 speed 4cyl and said "I don't have the patience to teach you. You have a week to figure it out. Next week you'll drive me around, and if you stall once I'm taking the truck back."
      I ended up driving that little truck for 200,000 miles over the next 10 years. I believe it's still on the road today.

      @BLINKBOXHD Před 3 lety

      I'm on 3 lessons, my best advice is to go somewhere quiet with a suitable driver and just practise getting to the biting point and holding it. Mastering clutch control early helps so much. Steering will come to you, just try keep your left leg in the centre of the road as a reference.

    • @Mahmood.23
      @Mahmood.23 Před 3 lety

      @@BLINKBOXHD I'm on my third lesson as well 😁 I've realised that I always either hold the clutch down all the time or I hold the accelerator down without even realising. Also which steering method do you use? (My instructor keeps telling me to use the push and pull method but I hate it)

    • @BLINKBOXHD
      @BLINKBOXHD Před 3 lety

      @@Mahmood.23 push pull is good for tight corners and bends cos otherwise your arms will lock up. But for roundabouts I just turn the wheel and hold it (make sure not to lock arm). There is no correct way to steer, just make sure your comfortable and have control. My hands are roughly 9:30/2:30 on the wheel.

    Your videos really help me a lot, I actually just started learning to drive 4 weeks ago. I haven't drive without an instructor yet as of course I only just started learning recently but I feel very confident, I just need to work on the clutch control as I kept stalling when moving away in traffic or emerging from junctions. I also need to work using the clutch when coming to a stop but of course it's early days and I know I will get better especially with your videos, I've seen your other videos, sometimes watch the same ones at least 3 times just to get it stuck in my brain and to be sure what to do when I'm doing my driving lessons.
    Keep up with the great videos though mate! 👍🏽 I enjoyed your latest video on how to steer properly as well 💯
