    Hey Todd, Thanks for this video. Very informative. Did you train mostly on gravel or pavement? I’d like to get in for 2023 but am hesitant because I have to travel for decent gravel, I’m in Philadelphia. Pavement is easy for me to train on. Just curious. Thanks, Jim

    • @thunsak06
      @thunsak06  Před rokem +5

      Thanks Jim! I would say I trained mostly on the road bike. I do have dirt roads close to home, but they involve quite a bit of climbing. So, most of my really long rides were mostly on tarmac. Unbound doesn’t require any technical skills mostly. Long straight roads for the most part.
      I would do a lot of long rides on your gravel bike though, road or gravel, just to make sure you’re comfortable for all those hours in the saddle. Hopefully you get in, definitely worth the trip!

      @thunsak06  Před rokem +4

      Kevin, there are so many good bikes out there, Trek is one as well. I have a Specialized Diverge myself. The one thing I would recommend is a bike with enough tire clearance. My Diverge only fits 42 tires max. Went with 38’s @ Unbound and had issues with mud. I would pick a bike that would fit 47 tires so you have the comfort with the big tires but can go smaller when you need the clearance for mud.

      Thanks Kevin, Hero 10 mounted below my stem, had a cable going from the GoPro into a small frame bag into an external battery. I set the GoPro to shut off after 5 minutes. When I was testing it, I would always forget to turn it off and I could never remember if it was on or off. Lol . So I could just turn it on and go about my business without worry knowing it would shut itself off. I had plenty of battery life left at the end. I recorded an hour and 55 minutes. Great video. I've been slacking the past year on training, but now I think I've gotten the proper motivation again (plus I finally got my gravel bike that I ordered in Nov 2020). How many road miles were there (approx) this year? What tires did you go with? I see a lot of Pathfinder Pros in this video - I normally run Rene Herse 42mm knobbies, but kinda want to try something else.

    • @thunsak06
      @thunsak06  Před rokem +2

      Dana, not many road miles. Only 5 to 6 miles tops I’d say. Unbound is all dirt. Great event and highly recommend if you get the chance. This year I ran the Panaracer gravel kings (the file tread slicks) in a 38. Only because I had to scramble to find a narrower tire due to the mud. Not a big selection in town. Was going to run IRC boken plus in a 42, which is the biggest my bike would fit. But weather forced me to change. I ran the pathfinder pro’s the year before and got a sidewall slash. I think a lot of people run them because they were the winning tire the previous 2 years. I recommend the toughest tire in the biggest size that will fit your bike.

      @@thunsak06 Awesome and thanks, for some reason I thought there was a lot more road miles. I don't know why so many people run rigid on their gravel bikes. A cheap as dirt coil suspension fork with 30-40 mm of travel and a cheap suspension seatpost, that's the way to go. It will help with comfort and traction.

    It's either my imagination, or a number of people are bouncing up and down (every pedal stroke), wasting energy with a suspension seat post. Also.. did a lot of you run out of gears? It seems like the cadence was a bit high for some of the riders.

    • @thunsak06

      I noticed that as well. I don’t think those riders were on suspension seat post’s. Probably a bad bike fit in my opinion. I was thinking the same thing. All those riders you saw bouncing were in the first hour of the race, I’ll bet they ran out of energy quick, but mostly what was going through my mind was chafing, 200 miles of that has gotta leave a mark. Lol.
      I never ran out of gears myself, ran a 42 chainring with the sram explorer cassette in the rear. Would have run a 44 just to keep the chain line a little more centered, but it won’t fit on my bike. I think the riders you saw spun out at the beginning of the video were single speeds.
