  • Snapper Fishing- Unleashing the Secrets of the Grumpy Fish Lure!
Join us for a great afternoon's fishing where I learnt how to correctly use a "Kabura" slider lure!
As some of you know, I sold my fishing ski, but never fear, I am not yet ready to go to the dark side! The new "Fishing Chariot" is being built, and although quite similar to my last, this one has a few key improvements. It just takes time to get these things together. I'll be showing you these in upcoming videos.
In the meantime I can't get out on the water as much as I like, but recently I was honoured to be invited out for an afternoon fish on the Hauraki Gulf, about 90 minutes drive north from Auckland, New Zealand.
Wes Braddock, inventor of Glowbite Lures and self-confessed tragic fisherman, took me out on an amazing Fatcat 4.5 metre poly boat to show me the benefits of the Glowbite kabura "Grumpy Fish" lure for catching Snapper. Fishing kabura lures is a little different to fishing many other types of soft or hard lures or baits, so watch the video to learn just how easy it can be to get your bag of snapper!
We had blast- literally- as the wind and swell picked up during the afternoon. But we persevered between the wind squalls and managed to catch several Snapper, and did it in relative comfort and safety on the Fatcat despite the conditions and such a compact-sized offshore boat! I was amazed at how it handled the conditions considering the boat's size, plus the overall "smoothness" of the ride in the choppy waters. Maybe there is life after PWC fishing after all- when I get too old to take the regular pounding the body gets on my PWC adventures!
What I liked was the Fatcat boat draws very little water, so was very easy to handle at the ramp, plus the ride was a hell of a lot softer than the pounding you take on a similar sized aluminum boat.
I would love to hear some feedback if you use Karuba lures, and if you think the flashing light eyes of the Glowbite lures might benefit your fishing. Also let me know what you think about poly boats as a serious fishing boat.
Thanks very much Wes for a great afternoon's fishing. Please check out the entire Glowbite range at glowbite.co.nz

Welcome to NZ and I hope you are enjoying your stay. You have arrived a bit too early for the start of the work-up season (September) which provides the most productive and enjoyable fishing in the Hauraki Gulf.

Thanks! One day I’ll manage to get there in the right season. It was fairly good fishing session as it was so I could imagine how much fun it would be in the work-up season!

Nice vid, I looked at these boats when they first came out, discussed Australian distribution etc, but it’s still a boat, gotta get a JetSki.

Cheers Douger. Yes I still. prefer the ease of fishing from my ski, but as I said in the video description, a good option when I get too old to take the pounding of the offshore fishing on a PWC! Thanks for coming back to the channel mate!

Glad you enjoyed it! I personally have a renewed interest in the simplicity of this type of lure fishing. I think I'll be doing more of this once the local snapper season is open again.

Great video 👍. That boat seems pretty good for size, the lures also worked a treat.
Paul, considering conditions on day, would you say your old ski with pods would handle about the same as that compact boat?

I was thinking on the day that the ski could cut through a little larger swell and go a little faster in the same conditions. It felt a lot like the ski when standing up at the windscreen! The difference I guess is carrying capacity of people, and also fuel economy. The 60hp outboard only used 13litres for this trip where the ski probably would have done 40 or more! This is a tough 4.5m boat that has a lot going for it. I believe this rig sells for about $45-$50k NZD so about 30% more than a fully /well equipped fishing ski. But a great boat option for safety in a small and easy to manage package!
