GLENBARD WEST, GONZAGA COMMIT Braden Huff vs CHICAGO WHITNEY YOUNG in Illinois State Title Game!

  • Glenbard West's HS basketball team (Glen Ellyn, IL) completed it's Storybook Season (37-1) by beating Chicago Whitney Young 56-34 to win the 2022 Illinois 4a IHSA Boys Basketball State Title. Gonzaga commit Braden Huff led the Hilltoppers balanced attack all season alongside Caden Pierce (Princeton), Ryan Renfro, Paxton Warden and Bobby Durkin.
After starting 26-0, Glenbard West's only defeat was a buzzer beater vs Sierra Canyon (CA) who features Amari Bailey and Bronny James. Glenbard West is coached by Jason Opoka.
Whitney Young Dolphins overcame a shakey start to their season by winning the Chicago Public League City Title in February and making a lengthy postseason run to the state title game. Coached by Ty Slaughter, Young was led by seniors Xavier Amos (NIU), AJ Casey (Miami), and junior PG Dalen Davis among others.
Time will tell but this Glenbard West team and their run will be considered among the greats in recent Illinois basketball history.
Thanks to the IHSA and Mario Bravo (@wegotnexthoops) for his coverage for Ballislife!

it was a great game to watch, GBW’s defense is unique, they’re lengthy and they play as a unit on both sides of the ball, that’s why they finished the season 37-1, state champions and that’s why they won by how much they did.

@@sushi400 when i was in Jr High. 7th and 8th grades. In 74 75. I went to school in Wheaton which borders Glen Ellyn. We ran a 3-1-1 halfcourt trap that wanted you to let them pass the ball in the corners or anywhere but the middle. All you do is slide to the man who left his position. 1-3-1 is basically the same. It was also easy to go into a 2-3. 3-2. 2-1-2. Or a 1-2-2 zone. It amazes me the this team from a school that has only been known for football came to play this zone that nobody knows of. Thats the beauty. With their length you cant throw over the top. No letting you dribble to middle. They let you and want you to pass into corner and along sideline. In early 70s to 80s. Lockport Porters were the master of 1-3-1. Bob Basarich? Was the coach. I only recall 2 or 3 players that were 6 5 or bigger. If i had 6 or 7 kids who liked to play D. If they were all 5'10 to 6'1. I could beat 90% of teams in any state. Kids dont see these defenses anymore. Plus you just change it up every 2 possesions. Most teams would panic and strat playing one on one.

Don't wanna rain on glenbard west parade, first I do wanna say all the way from Chicago, congratulations!!!!! You boys from glenbard west earned as well as deserve that. But reading the comments trying to talk about Chicago public schools, um there's a reason Whitney young has 5 or 6 of those state titles compared to y'all 1 state title that y'all just won. It's levels to this, see when you put on a Whitney young jersey, or a simeon jersey, there's expectations to this. They make that trip down state almost every year, and wins it almost every year. It's the first yr since 2005 no team from the city is bringing back a first place state title from 2a on up to 4a. Let that sink in a lil bit, the road to the state playoffs still go thru the city, city still has the best ballers, and best schools representing chitown. Again, congrats to you guys. Heck of a team they got. But state playoff basketball is still ran and owned by schools in the city. Whitney young as well as simeon, Morgan Park who has won a few in 3a Orr Academy who's won 3 straight in 2a before the pandemic. All them schools are expected every yr to be seen down state and win the whole thing like they usually do. How many y'all got again? 1 right. Y'all don't have them kind of expectations like those schools have. I'm jus saying. Congrats!!!!! To Glenbard west. Looking forward to watching big man play at the next level at Gonzaga!

How many y'all got again? Just that one for the first time. State title still goes thru chicago, and the city schools. Whitney young, simeon, curie, orr academy, Kenwood academy, will always be relevant to be back down state. Can you say the same for y'all nope! Past schools from the city like king, Farragut, westinghouse, Marshall boys and girls. Have more state titles than glenbard west. So think about that. The best ballers, and top schools still cone from Chicago. I gave y'all your props. That's a great team Y all had. Hands down.
