  • We decided to end 2020 on a high note by paddling to Cumberland Island and then backpacking to the Stafford Beach Campground to celebrate the New Year. This trip had a lot of moving parts, was planned 6 months in advance and minus being forced to leave someone behind on the island, it all came together perfectly!
Our trip began at Crooked River State Park where we paddled 6.07 miles with the outgoing tide to the Plum Orchard Dock. We then backpacked another 4.7 miles from the Plum Orchard Mansion to Stafford Beach where we setup camp. We had the entire camp to ourselves and spent the next 4 days enjoying Stafford, the beach and eagerly awaiting the New Year.

Filmed in 4K at 24fps with a Panasonic G85, GoPro HERO7 Black and iPhone 11 Pro Max. A few additional clips were recorded on a GoPro HERO5 and HERO8 Black.

The tides here are no joke and luckily you didn't run across a submarine heading in or out to sea. Those can really put a damper on water activities. Cumberland is beautiful and peaceful. I haven't been for a while and need to get back over there. Great video as usual.

A submarine would definitely put a wrench into our plan. Thank you for the comment.

The tides are no joke! My husband and I lived there full time until he passed away (life estate). Came upon a sub many times.
Not an easy life with no bridges , stores, mail, gas, nothing. I miss it. I use to offer folks rides like the truck that stopped on the beach for yal.
Fun looking back … nice video.

So much fun, like paddling the Nantahala backwards!

Haha, crazy to find this. Live in Glynn County, GA.
We camped Cumberland this New Years Day and the 2nd also. I also wanted to kayak over but had some members back out.
Congrats on an awesome adventure, that place is awesome. Never seen a better nighttime beach scene.

Thanks, we got lucky with the weather, the original forecast was calling for rain so we had a few people back out as well. Love Cumberland Island!

Love the video. I’ve been contemplating a canoe trip to Cumberland myself but, am concerned about the tides. Do you go at high tide both ways?

Thanks! We departed from Crooked River state park with the outgoing tide and on our return paddle we left Cumberland on the incoming tide.
