This video is PART ONE of the series on Backpacking Cumberland Island in Georgia. On Day One, our group takes the ferry to Cumberland Island and hikes to Hickory Hill Campsite for our first night on the island. On this adventure are: Ice Bear Hikes, Iron Braid Adventures, Senior Hiker 77, Following Walker’s World, and Atypical Hiker.

“Somebody back East says ‘Now why don’t he write?!?’” Timmons the peddler. LOVE “Dances with Wolves.” That was the first movie that my wife & I went on a date to see…many moons ago! Have you ever seen the EXTENDED version? Most people do not even know that it exists. You can get it off of Amazon. It is over 4 hours long, but it includes details about things that make the movie so much better.
Really digging this place. Going to have to look into it a little more. This just might be the one place that I could get my wife to go on hiking/backpacking/camping trip. MIGHT. She loves to camp... in the teardrop. Not so much in a tent with no running water or shower. LOL!

Thanks Brad! Dances With Wolves...My all time favorite movie! I didn’t know about the extended cut...now I do...and I will get it. Awesome! Yeah, check out Cumberland. The Sea Camp has full facilities. You just have to bring your gear on the ferry. They have carts to pull everything for those who go to Sea Camp. It isn’t far from the Ferry Boat. But, some of those extended hiking sites are awesome. Thanks for watching. ✌️
AS THE CROW FLIES HIKING She would be ok with a day or two at the extended sites, then come back to the Sea Camp site for a night with facilities, I think. We may look at it for a trip early next year. Right now, 2020 is looking pretty slammed, all the way around.
I may see if my wife will take a trip there as well. He doesn’t like to tent camp either. ✌️
When I saw "Cumberland island" I had to find part one to see the whole series. I live in Alabama and I'm very familiar with area. Glad you caught some footage of the wild horses!

You got armadillos and horses checked off the "must see" list quick! That live oak forest is my happy place....just gorgeous.
I have experienced the squirrels an racoons first hand and they are not to be underestimated. I had a squirrel crawl down my bear line at Stafford while we were gone hiking one day. Came back to an absolute mess. Fortunately for the trip’s sake, it just got into the trash and not the food bag. I have since gotten one of the metal "rat sacks". Works too because on our next trip, I caught another squirrel trying to chew through it but he couldn't do it. Can’t wait to see the rest of the trip!
I figured you had some knowledge of Cumberland when you immediately knew the campsite from Instagram. I was very nervous about the squirrels and raccoons. But, maybe because it was cold, they weren’t out. We kept hearing about the potential destruction. Cool story. That metal bag worked great. I can see why Stanford has the most potential for issues with all the traffic there. Appreciate you watching. I think I will go back with my boys sometime.✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING yeah, we've been to Cumberland more times than I can count. Winter is a great time to go...spring and summer temps/humidity/bugs can be rough...even by southern standards.

Been there, done that but for 3 days/2 night. After the meet at the Ranger Station we headed on our (about 12 hour) hike to Brick Hill. We got ate up by them flies and ticks were thick as mud. Funny story, first night I ask my buddy if I should hang his food and he said "No, I have MH and I raccoons can't smell thru the foil pack". Next morning his pack was unzipped and all his food for the next two days was gone. Between me, my son and his son there was enough for him to survive. I hung my bag and boys put theirs in tent. We stayed at Hickory Hill second night and turkeys walked right thru camp. Beautiful place and would go back but in cooler weather. Sorry for long comment. : (
DiddyBushcraftnOutdoors -Awesome comment. That stinks about the food on the first night. I was glad we went in the winter. Even then, I found a few ticks. So, I can’t imagine the summer. We did hang the food bags and that seemed to work. Or, the raccoons were just not active...not sure. It is an amazing place for sure. I want to go back with my sons. Appreciate you subscribing. What a stunning place that is, over here it's the foxes that attack for your food they'll rip tents to get at it and I even got bit by one in when in a bivvi bag. Got to watch the horses don't get tangled in guy lines too, though our wild ponies don't tend to be dangerous.
You are so right. I was nervous the whole time. I even bought a “rat sack” it looks like chain mail...and supposed to keep rodents out of your food bag. We didn’t have any issues, but, we heard others that did. ✌️
So funny he mentioned Dances with Wolves! At the beginning of the video, I thought "Hmm, this guy looks like Kevin Costner!"

I grew up near Cumberland Island but only ever did one backpacking trip there which was a lot of fun. Not sure why I never made the time to do at least one more backpacking trip there. It's beautiful.

@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING my last day of work will be Friday. That will give me a couple of weeks to finish up final preparations. I ordered a tent. I decided to go with a six moons designs lunar solo. Only $230 and 26 oz. They're made from silpoly now. Compresses down smaller than dyneema. This may allow me to use my LiteAF pack for the whole trip.

I love Cumberland Island! Last time I was there I got a photo of a bobcat walking through Sea Camp. Apparently they released a few 20 or 30 years ago and they have been doing very well out there.

Johnny B - Do you subscribe to “Follow Walker’s World”? He went on the trip and he is a kayaker and fisherman. He knows that area. He went with us. He would be the person to ask that question. I’m not sure. It seemed like about a 30-40 minute ride on the ferry. There may be another jump point to kayak. It is an absolutely amazing place! Thanks for watching. ✌️
