3 Guitar Pedals That Should Have Been Famous
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 08. 2024
- This week's episode celebrates guitar pedals that should have been famous, but weren't-- namely, the Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz, Danelectro Wasabi Forward-Reverse Delay and Tech 21 Double Drive. In addition to some really solid jams, this episode is a social commentary on the fleeting nature of human life, so feel free to use it as the unofficial soundtrack for your mid-life crisis.

Never thought Josh's comedy existentialism would hit so close to home.
I’m enjoying this new more antagonistic iteration of Josh, it’s like watching a super-villain origin story unfold in real time.
What would happen to nick? Will he join or fight his former master?
@@pimcramer2569 THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
@@pimcramer2569 definitely some sith energy between these two...
When I was 17 I went to a pub in Hereford (near the boarder of Wales) to meet a man about a pedal. At the bar I met an old east London geezer who felt more like a character from a Guy Ritchie film than an actual human being. Out of a massive bag he had slung over his back he pulled out a huge, plastic, display pedalboard made for a trade show or something. On it was the whole range of Dan Electro Wasabi pedals.
He said to me "mate you can make any bloody sound you want in the world on these!" I said "Have you played them?" he said "No".
Now I had never seen pedals that looked anything like this in my life, the board looked like a miniature model from Thunder Birds.
He said "it's your's for 100 quid", I said "No" He said "come on geeza! 75?" I said "No'. Do I regret this decision? YES.
I want this story made into a short film please. Preferably with Danny Dyer as the Pedal Geezer?
He was gonna feed you to the pigs
Punish him Errol
That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard! Being 17 is dumb! ;)
Fallen off the back of a lorry?
"Nick, you're under appreciated."
Being an unmentioned bass player is the way of life, the way of all things
@@adamsteelproducer comes with the territory
He's fine. We let him go outside a few days ago.
that Denelectro looks like the love child of the Star Wars Land Speeder and a 1955 Cadillac.
I love it.
Jetsons vibes
Rotisserie Chicken
Plot twist- it actually is
Oh totally on the mark!
That Wasabi line weigh about 12lbs each. They double as weaponry. I have the distortion (which is super weird, like a Rat with 15 knobs) and rarely use it, but there are times when it’s the only pedal in the world that will do the job.
My Casket better have the same serial number they tattoo on my wrist.
"HE HAS THE BOX!"
I like Josh’s existential crisis arc, reminds me that things always change and they’ll most likely bum you out……another great episode!
I remember those wasabi pedals. The crowd that danelectro appealed to (budget players) thought those pedals were too expensive and everybody else wasn't interested in them bc it was a danelectro pedal
Josh: "on today's episode-"
Me: "THIS IS GONNA BE A GOOD ONE"
they're all good :P
Every. Damn. Time.
Haha same
“Some of you are amazing, but it didn’t work out like you thought, but you know someday, someone is going to pull you out of a box and talk about you” wow thanks Josh I really needed to hear that today 🥲
Proud owner of a Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz (acquired it in a trade; said goodbye to the Big muff pi for the final time). I love how Josh uses the same setting that I use for the first part of the jam before the sad part
Love that Tweak Fuzz though I like the name Afro Fuzz a little better and I was oddly bummed when I found out Blues Saraceno didn’t create the circuit. Not sure why but hey good for his Dad. I’m sure he’s part of the reasons Blues is such an amazing guitarist. Guy probably has guitar chops to match his building chops. Why were all the pedals around 2005 so big? I remember my local boutique shop having one in the display case and wanting to buy it but I didn’t know if that was crazy expensive for a pedal or if it was worth it.
I love my Tweak Fuzz! That Double Drive sounds amazing, I'd buy one of those.
this is rapidly becoming my favourite CZcams channel. I laugh. I cry. It moves me. Oh, yeah, and the pedals are pretty cool, too, especially the Double Drive. And Josh? It's gonna be okay.
Thank you!
The third musical piece should be called „Drive Shaped Box” 🙂
I literally went to Reverb as I was watching the video and bought a TweakFuzz. Well played sir…..well played. I’m not even a “Fuzz” guy!
If I had a nickel for every time Josh Scott told me something was my fault, I'd have some change in my pocket going jingla-linga-ling
Then you could call him on the telephone. Give him a ring.
But each time he tried it was the same old thing
Addison is killing it with the drum mix.
I never thought I'd have an existential crisis while watching a show about guitar pedals...
Speaking about Tech 21, their Randy Bachman Signature American Woman fuzz is just criminally underrated!
Does this pedal not sell very well? It sure sounds cool.
I love that pedal! Picked it up the same week I found another Double Drive (had previously bought & flipped one).
I also like the Rotochoir and the DLA V.2
@@brucegibbins3792
It's hard to find. I got lucky and found a used one for around $100AUD
Straight up we need an easily available Garnet Herzog in a pedal pls pedal manufacturers dooooo iiiiiit
I remember seeing that pedal and wishing they'd named it the 'Randy Bachman Turner Overdrive'.
I think that hands down, THE most underappreciated pedal was, and still is, the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive.
There was period where for years and years during the 90s and 2000's if you wanted the classic TS808 Tube Screamer you had to either buy the Ibanez reissue for $180, a vintage one for several hundred, or an overpriced boutique model. However, those who were willing to do just a tiny bit of research would have discovered that the Sparkle Drive was an exact clone of the TS808, but with a wet/dry blend control. Voodoo Labs advertised it as "being able to sound like playing through 2 amps." Now we know it really works to add your dry tone in for added clarity.
Why no one bought these is beyond me, since it's really the perfect 808 Tube Screamer. Most use TS to add a little gain and push the front of the amp, as well as to add midrange for solos so you can cut through the mix. No one uses it as the "drive" channel on a single channel amp. Well, at least no one who's played long enough and have enough experience to know that it's not really designed for that. Using it for what people tend to use it for, you'd think that between the fact that it's half the price of the TS808 RI, and a LOT cheaper than the other options, combined with the ability to dial your clean in would mean that most people who use tube screamer would instead use one of these.
Yet, I still rarely see them on pedalboards. I don't get it. They've changed the design and call it Sparkle Drive Mod now, I think it's the 808 with a couple of the more popular Keeley mods. They're still affordable and you can still but the old ones used for a song (literally and metaphorically), plus I predict these will be a pedal that inexplicably sells for was too much online at some point.
The JHS Moonshine is based off the Voodoo labs sparkle drive or a clone of it. Its a tubescreamer with the a clean knob to mix your gain/overdrive with your clean sound. Its also in the JHS Sweet Tea along with an angry charlie. He's talked about it a video and about the Sparkle drive.
@@mattdayne2585 I've played them, but he does a lot of oddball stuff, and they're $200. I was more talking more about at the time when you could them for less than half the price of a reissue 808, and they still weren't selling a lot. Plus there was a weird aversion to midrange for some reason, as least among the cord sniffers.
Hey Josh, loving the spring classics t-shirt. You may be the only other person I ‘know’ that shares my combined hobbies of guitar pedals, road cycling and Star Wars. Keep up the good work.
Is he celebrating P-R finally happening this weekend? Josh has a few cycling shirts... sometime he needs to tell us the back story. Fan? Racer? Wheelsucker?
@@3eyedfishy There are no coincidences in this world so it must be a nod to Roubaix. His cycling style? He’s a big guy and seems very generous so I see him up the front of the group taking the wind for the rest of us!
I could see Josh on a Tuesday morning group ride doing strong pulls at the front on the flat sections...
that Tech 21 is rad. I'd love to see this series continue - I love Josh's take on underrated pedals.
Josh, the videos are awesome, taught me a lot, but I'm mainly commenting to say your playing has gotten so much better since you started the show. Keep going man, much love.
Josh, Honestly, you sound like a man who needs something in his life...something like... a new guitar, a new pedal...and a new amp. For sure. I mean, that makes me smile, you know?
I think Josh deserves a new Harmony guitar.
Don't worry Chris, he is just playing a character.
Enio Rezende woosh
@@enioair I'm more worried about you, Enio. BTW, Any Old Iron?
@@Ndlanding sorry mate, I cant answer you, not because I don't want to but because I can't, I'm not a native speaker.
It’s amazing how you pull off these episodes! I can watch them all day long. Very informative and entertaining! I was never into pedals, but now I might buy some. Got a wishlist ready to go.
I can't express in words how much I appreciate Josh and the JHS crew putting on these videos.
Amazing pedals, and I remember the Danelectro Wasabi. The rest slipped by my my radar...
Good jams, and thank you all!
Thank you!
Wow! Great episode. The Tweak Fuzz sounds way better than I was lead to believe. Those Wasabi Pedals deserve an episode all their own. I always expect good things from Tech 21.
I learn something new every time I watch this channel. Thank you for your musical suggestions, always good stuff!
I love your t-shirt. The 3 first races are just around the corner here.
Oh, and I love your channel. Inspiring! TNX!!!
Nice jams, great video ! I have the SD Tweak Fuzz and i love it ! It was my first fuzz pedal, and every guitar player knows the importance of the first fuzz pedal :P
Thanks for cobbling together some classics.
Sad Town's a suburb of Dad Town. LOL, as a pedal nerd Dad in a garage post rock band, this rang true! Josh's on-going existential crisis aside, keep doing what you do guys. You bring a lot of joy to the world!
Sad town is why dad jokes exist. Normal things become funny after being in sad town too long.
@@orlock20 Crying, not laughing yet.
Nick is the best here, "It's getting kinda dark, go to record time."
Josh you're a great sport and you have one of the best channels on youtube that we all enjoy and look forward to seeing. Thank you .
Thank you!!!'
I love his cycling related tshirts.
Josh Scott, under appreciated comedy genius of the pandemic age! Thank you Josh, Addison and Nick for keeping me sane! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I love you guys. I find myself watching ur posts all the time, and ur musical, and I don’t even own an effects pedal. I just know u guys make me smile and laugh. We all need more of that in our lives. I even started using “Wurdz iz hard” when my mouth is struggling to communicate what my brain is thinking. Thank you for what u do!
I so love the Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz. Bought one on a whim when they first came out and haven't regretted the decision since... and I still have the box. 😁
He has the box.
Ding
📦
Love it! I have 5 of them and i also have 2 boxes. ;)
@@timwzk1139 I sing that in my head every time I see someone with a pedal box. 😂
"one day someone will pull you out of a box and talk about you" genuinely made me tear up a little bit ngl
Rotary selectors definitely make pedals gooder; add toggle switches (for like in-flange and out-of-flange and stuff like that), and it would be freakin’ awesome!
Edited to add the hierarchy of pedal awesomeness:
No knobs < 2 knobs < 4 knobs < (multi knobs + rotaries) < (knobs + rotaries + toggles) …and so forth.
The more kinds of controls = the more awesomeness. Pretty straight forward…
Another great video. I really like when you demo the pedals with a drummer and bass, as I play in a band, I don't noddle at home so it's nice to hear it in a real live mix. BTW the drummer is excellent!
Excellent episode, and at points I nearly cried. Especially in that first jam. Tour of Flanders is not my idea of a tour, and I haven't got the box but I've heard Travis and they were quite good, and while I never thought to buy one of their records, I'm now planning to check them out, especially as they're Scots and therefore better people.
Damn first time I've seen the tweak fuzz featured on anything other than that proguitarshop demo by Andy. That "I think I lost my headache" by Queens of the Stone Age intro sold me in a second, bought it second hand on craigslist like 12 years ago!
The Double Drive was one of the first drive pedals I bought when I got back into guitar after a 17-year hiatus. Stacked into an OCD v.1, or my AC Booster it just sounds ace. Does Led Zep II tones really well (and more :) )
Tech 21 is underrated, period. Their Rotochoir and the Boost DLA V.2 (the one with subdivision switch, trails) are fantastic.
Any of the Vick Audio drive pedals (Mount Pleasant, Tree of LIfe, V-2 Distortion) should be famous.
Josh, I really enjoyed that first solo. It was quite catchy and melodic. Nice job, man!
Good jams dude, real good jams...
man , if i was ever depressed, i'd start watching a bunch of jhs pedal-shows. i loved all the music, when i heard the last one i thought, hey, Josh has been listening to a bunch of nirvana just like me because it was on the news that nevermind has been out for 30 years now.
I am depressed and I watch jhs videos daily - it does the trick
I'm glad you watch the news to find out how long Nirvana have been out. Just imagine! In ten years' time, it'll be 40 years. And in just a cenrtury's time it'll be, um, (I'll get back to you).
@@Ndlanding I'm glad you are glad.
@@tolvajakos I'm so glad, I'm so glad, I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad. (Skip James, I think, covered by Cream)
@@Ndlanding cool song, the original, thank you. the cream version is a bit too beatlesized for me.
Grrrrreat vid Josh! You are a riot. Thanks for all the kind words about the Double Drive. Coulda, woulda, shoulda. It really did sound incredible. Maybe we should think about reissuing it...???
That's a great shirt, Josh! Good to see you are supporting pedals on bikes too 😉
Hey J ☺😎 Oh Wow... I'd Have to Say.. You Got Me on Those 3.. Lovin That Wasabi Delay... And Great Jams to Guys ☺☺😎💯
The wasabi was really cool, that whole series was cool. My guitarists dad had this and an ibanez overdrive when I was a teen and loved playing it through his Mesa Studio Caliber .22. The double drive was cool from tech 21 too.
Your channell is the only thing in my life I look foward to every week. You are worthy of love Josh. And Nick is great too.
So, I only own 1 pedal (DV Mark Tube Marker) but find myself fascinated by this channel....especially considering you talk so kindly about products of your 'competitors' - awesome
The most watchable videos for guitarists on CZcams, somehow as educational as Tim Pierce, as funny as the first time you saw Sean of the Dead - Josh has it all - even the OK Computer voice was flawless.
Love when josh talks about some of my favorite under appreciated things! I love the tech 21 double drive! I have a red one, and I have the box!
Also Travis is awesome!!!
Loving the spring classics t-shirt Josh. I'm looking forward to Paris-Roubaix on Sunday
I started working at guitar center around 2010 in accessories and we had the full line of these first run Seymour Duncan pedals and I'm not exaggerating when I say NO ONE wanted these pedals - we ended up clearing out the full line and I got the Shape Shifter tremolo for $17 dollars, still got it
That segment with Josh checking the serial numbers of the pedals against the box and then concluding with "if a pedal doesn't have a box, it's pointless," is basically me on Reverb.
Also, I winced pretty hard at then end when Josh just casually chucked the box for the fairly rare pedal off camera.
I modded a tweek fuzz with a pair of bc109s, and the" volume" mod about 10 years ago. Still rock it as it rocks
YES, the Wasabi Delay! * insert 'The Office Thank You' GIF *
Ok, the volume knob may be too sensible for some settings, but it's a great pedal and I love it.
Thanks for this one, it’s gold!
The wasabi pedals were so good. Plus there’s a secret switch (battery compartment)
You guys just seriously crack me up. Thanks for that.
Dude who has all those Plumes pedals on Pedalboards of Doom just started drooling when Josh started opening up the Double Drives.
The dad jam was not only my favorite jam on this video but on any of your videos. Very entertaining from time to time. Peace.
Ok most of the time.
Great ep....more like this please
Great show as always.
The wasabi pedal kicks ass! Sounds amazing!! Thanks for sharing these pedals!
Today I walked into guitar center for some strings. Saw a tweakfuzz in the used case and thanks to this episode i knew to grab it. Thanks Josh!
Love my Tweak Fuzz! (the second pedal I ever owned) I had it modded to add a second foot switch that jumps from whatever the tone dial was set to (3 or 4), to max whoof position (6)
I was always surprised the tweak fuzz didn't become a staple like swollen pickle. it seemed destined for success.
Nice shirt. Stoked for tomorrow and Sunday!
You need to review the Boss ME range! The ME 70 is so great. I love it. Great show, keep up the great stuff, whatever, you know, jolly good , etc.
Loved this episode Josh!
I agree completely about Travis & the duncan tweak fuzz.
Travis live at the palace is pretty fantastic.
Noting that the shirt reminds me that strangely, Paris Roubaix is this weekend, and I am very psyched!
Reverb: Hey Josh, we're haven't sold any Klons this month, havin' trouble keepin' the lights on.
Josh: OK. Gimme a list of you most obscure, most hard to sell, odd ball pedals.
Reverb: Gotta pencil.
Josh: One-sec, they have to have the box.
Reverb: We'll call you back...
Lol … prices do tend to jump after each episode but they do down when the shine wears off. That Tweak Fuzz is a great one ! alchemy Audio does a great mod to it and gives it more hair. But great pick for a pedal that has been overlooked. - Rick / PureSalem Guitars
these are definitely some of the best jams you have done good sir
he seriously needs to get a mister Rogers set going on. it's time to turn this into a kids show with truthbombs and pedals
Nick’s direction was the highlight of this video for me. Awesome job!
More existential problem seeking! Haha, it was a lot of fun watching this ep.
This episode is a cure for my depression. Josh is the best! Nick you're awesome too!
I have a couple of those Wasabi pedals, the one in the video and the Rock'a'bye (rockabilly style delay+distortion), both are pretty good but I have found the push switches to be a little on the delicate side compared to the tankesque outer build. The branding is weird: on the pedal, the box, the manual it would be easy to miss that they have anything to do with Danelectro as only the embossing on the sides of the pedal says it. Many thanks for increasing the value of mine, please do the mk1 Volvo V40 and my house next :-)
Man, I really liked the rock a bye pedal. One of the few pedals I've ever regretted selling. Doubles the weight of pedal board by itself though.
Before you do the Volvo V40, could you please do the Chapman ML2 guitar with EMGs, as I need the money for Christmas. Thanking you in advance.
Aah the classics... love the shirt Josh ! Ride on.
You are a real cowboy Josh. Every time you come into town, the saloon goes nuts
Great t-shirt Josh!
The whole Greek tragedy with the box had me on the edge of my seat!
If that wasn't resolved I never would have gotten to sleep!
Hey Josh, I love my Double Drive. Musicians Friend had some made in ORANGE! I have one. Don't have the box. Your videos are awesome!
Nice octave jam Josh!!
bruh i swear to god that josh gets a kick from finding obscure pedals with low prices and making videos that give them exposure and raise in price
Favorite Jamm...second part of the first Jamm, very nice Jazz..! Nick was great on de Drums..!
Pure dead brilliant by the way. I met Fran Healy from Travis many years ago at an art launch in the fruit market gallery in Edinburgh.
Josh and Friends!
Watching your video led me to remember the “Four Gentlemen” in traditional Chinese art. Each of these represent a season and a quality of an individual’s character: the plum blossoms in winter (reflects strength of character in harsh conditions); the grass orchid for spring, this particular orchid is hard to see because it is often hidden under tall grass (reflects a good character that is there even though not seen or appreciated by others); the bamboo for summer bends in the wind but does not break (reflects good character even though things are going against them); and the chrysanthemum blooms in autumn (reflects a person whose character/wisdom blossoms late in life). Regardless of how the world treats us or our fortunes we should all strive to have good character symbolized by the “Four Gentlemen”
Damn... You're right. It has been a stressful week. Thanks man.
Too funny !! Pedal reviews and life lessons. Only an engineer would worry about serial #'s matching on decades old boxes. You guys are the best. Thank you.
Love the pedals, and I want one of them Double Drives!
Your madness nourishes me. Thank you.
Josh thank you for Record Time - it allows me a “two-fer” in the knowledge acquisition perspective.
Might I suggest a video just breaking down the effects used on The Man Who?
Never had exposure to Travis b4 Record Time - in your debt, this album transcends genres!
I love the Tweak fuzz and still use it today. Really, I just used it today to play Manic Depression. I was talked into doing the volume mod on it but hated it. I modded it back. You want to use it as a boost and you’ll hate it but use it as a fuzz and it’s a very nice. I have the box.
That rare wasabi series delay is cool o also love the distortion from that series inspiring AF!! Imagination
Nick, thank you so much for the mercy cut right before Record Time. It was really time someone put Josh out of his misery.
Super dope solo on that tweak fuzz jam.
