Hi Tom. Looking back into these videos as I'm finishing a small side table and need to add a finish in a hurry. I really like the shellac but since the table will have a horizontal surface, I'm wondering if you've tried to add a top coat of satin waterlox on top of it. My plan is to add several coats of shellac, let it dry for a day or two and rub out the waterlox 10-20% diluted. Any thoughts?

Yes Diego, if you use wax free shellac and keep the coats thin to dry faster it should do fine. Of course there are a lot of variables with any finish application, including the conditions, temperature and humidity, so evaluate cure times accordingly. You will see that wax free shellac is advertised as being suitable under varnishes such as tung oil, and follow the guidance on the tung oil can as well. Hope that helps! 👍

BLO works perfectly with Shellac. In the turning world, we use a 1/3 mixture of Blo, DNA, & shellac as a friction polish or to prepare the [wood] turning for its final finish of: oils, urethanes, resin, CA, etc.

Thanks for the advice in this video. I am in the final stages of a ash dining table. Any recommendations for a durable finish that will keep the wood ash close to natural as possible. Thanks

I’m a big fan of Waterlox for the beauty, ease of use, and protective qualities for a dining table top. Outside of professional methods of spraying “water-white” lacquers and conversion varnishes, wiping or brushing on oil varnishes are the easiest, best and safest way for to get great results at home.
There is a slight amber tint to the Waterlox and many other oil varnishes, which I don’t mind because it feels a little “warmer” in appearance. But if you want absolute clear, look for products described as “water-white” since that is the term commonly used in the industry. Hope that helps! Tom

always success for you, I am very inspired by your video tutorial. I hope I can follow the way you do it. The problem is that these materials are not yet available in my country. Are there other alternative materials to replace these materials? Thank you and my respect greetings from Indonesia

Thank you, I am glad to know you found the videos helpful. I have been to your country, in January 1995! It was very beautiful and I loved so many things about it. I even got to visit a Furniture making shop (owned by John Kim in Bali) where they were building 18th century reproductions. In the finishing area they were spraying on the finish which seemed like a kind of lacquer. I’m surprised shellac is not available, perhaps you may find it in the flake form? If so, it is mixed with alcohol to dissolve and make it useful where you could brush it on.
Thank you again, see you on the videos!
      Tom

Tom just found your videos, very informative and entertaining. As a bowl turner what do you recommend for food safe finishes. Thanks Dave

      Flaxseed oil all the way!

      Hey Dave,
I have not tried this finish yet but Mike Mahoney, a well known bowl turner, recommends walnut oil. He even started selling his own brand which I have heard is very nice, and it is food safe and will cure unlike the mineral oil which is commonly used as a simple food safe finish. I haven’t tried flaxseed oil but that seems worth checking out too.
      Hope that helps! Tom

@@EpicWoodworking Thanks Tom. I have used his walnut oil, works great. I put it on my wood handled knives, very durable. Just watched your Classic Woodworking program, enjoyed it a lot.
