Of all the videos I watch on different woodworking techniques, jigs, how To's, etc., I love Toms the most. Thanks for providing me with great instruction and guidance.
Great information, I use glass with 150 sandpaper, diamond stones 220 ,320,1200,Then water stones 4000,8000 the wood carver Mary May has great videos On the subject.
Handplanes are a joy and also fascinating tools.I have restored several , not better looking than new but in a condition to be able to do their job. Presently I am finishing up a Ohio Tool Co. # 27 I believe. It seams to be double stamped. I would also say It is in very good condition for its probablable age. I have also builded a block plane and a shoulder plane, among other tools. Enjoy creating tools very much. Enjoy you videos very much. Every time I come home waging another plane my wife coment every time is, don't you have enough of them already. My answer , a man mever has enough tools.
I’ve just found your channel and am glad I did. This video is great again. I have a nice 5.5 but my major thing to solve is clamping for planing. In my small workshop I only have a ‘normal’ bench without good vises. Building a carpenters bench is an option but my worries are mostly to get a good flat top as reference. :-)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
ANOTHER great, great, Tony the Tiger GREAT(remember this,) subject. I have so many planes(for an amateur;) like seeing them on my wall. Reminds me of my dad, when I used to fly fish back home, asking me why I needed to buy 3 of EVERY fly ever tied, when I used basically only two or three of the same name. I suppose it's similar. I'd tell dad, "makes me look like I know what I'm doing..." When the flies didn't work, I'd switch to worms...Cheers richard Normandy, France
Hand planes are the BOMB! Thanks for the video. 👍👍
My pleasure Jerry! 👍
I watched a video interviewing an old timer that felt the corrugated plane would hold extra wax in the grooves of the sole that would reduce the number of interruptions needed for additional waxing
Great class
Agree - Tom is fantastic !!! Tom - any thoughts of how to adjust a sharpening guide? Mine seems to be off enough that I have difficulties getting the edge perpendicular. Keep the great work coming!
Great Video - Thanks for your devotion to teaching!
Thanks Bill! 👍
Hi Tom. I love your videos. You are a great teacher. However .. I must pull you up for referring to green compound as "rouge". Rouge means Red! :) Regards from Perth, Derek
You are so right! Rouge is “red”…I rent that from the French named city Baton Rouge in Louisiana, meaning “red stick”😎
For some strange reason though, over time “jewelers rouge” started being used in general for these fine polishing compounds, no matter the color. In fact, you can search online and find jewelry equipment suppliers selling “green rouge” and “white rouge.” So I stand corrected…sort of 👍😎
Significant part of hand plane problems are sharpness, then sharpness and almost finally sharpness. 😁
Yes agreed, I’d say sharpness first too 👍, then setting (thin and even), then slipperiness 😎
Thanks Tom!
Do you flatten your stone
Yes, especially waterstones because they dish out with use. I use a diamond plate to quickly flatten when they need it. Thanks 👍
Hand planes in wood working are like micrometers in machining. Enough have been made please stop new production is no longer needed as everyone that wants one has enough to last two lifetimes. Why are people still making knives? Like candles I have one and are now pretty much set in knives and candles for life.
