I watched this when i was about 12 on the sci fi channel. I really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for uploading this. I cried from joy. I really look forward to the dvd release. This has to be something in my collection. Deprive was my favorite of all the stories. The music has been with me since I was a kid.
2022, I still watch this. The music along with the action, speaks so much, what a classic. One of the best anime short films ever. Remembering the good old days of the Sci-Fi channel.
I'd also like to state that deprived is seven minutes of filtered down, pure, refined 80's anime awesomeness. It was always my favorite short in the bunch, when I was a kid.
"Never give up. Always fight for your humanity no matter how much others try to deprive you of it and save/protect those you cherish with all that you are on the inside and out." This is extremely powerful too.
to this day, Robot Carnival is still one of my favorite anime. In particular, this short, deprive, is the reason I chose to pursue a career in animation. thanks for posting it. I love it!
The quintessential anime "good vs. evil" story, stripped down to its most impressive aspects and given the second greatest music in the medium for its genre. Completely awesome. I agree with Loader2K1 - this should have been a series.
I saw this when it first came out in the late 80's.I forced all the friends i could find to watch it. It inspired me to become an artist. I think it's the only anime i watched with my mom.
Interesting how Deprive's main male character is a robot that can take human form, while in Starlight Angel, it's a human in a robot costume. Just an observation.
I caught this on Cartoon Network's "Night of the Vampire Robots" back in the 90s. Vampire Hunter D (though crazily censored) came on the same night. This short and that movie were my first real experience of proper anime and solidified my love for it. Watching this now has me in nostalgic tears. This will never not be the coolest thing I've ever seen.
hey hey hey I grew up on this type of anime. Not only did have a morale behind it it had rockin animation to it and kickin musical track. Morale "fight for what you believe in" whether thats love, justice, whatever, just don't give up on what or who ya love or your dreams.
I agree. In my opinion many of the animes show what alot of actors cannot or simply will not attempt. A pure saturation of emotion into a character. Anime always show the evil on levels we can't comprehend or devotion that we just don't believe in. I think that's what happened to Heath Ledger. He went into a level of psychy to create the Joker and it overloaded the guy.
All of the Robot Carnival shorts were masterpieces of anime, but this one stuck with me for 20 years for some reason. It's just so powerful, a potent little does of '80s rock and cyberpunk wrapped up in a neat little story.
For some reason today, I wanted to see if Robot Carnival was on You Tube. Indeed it is. When I was younger, I used to wonder why some of these skits were silent. Then I realize that sometimes you don't even need words to tell a complete story. Just good action, emotion. Oh, and kick ass tunes.
at the 2.00 minute mark is one of the sickest scenes when he jumps off of his hover craft and the robot knocks his shades off thus revealing his face and he just keeps flying as if nothing happened, that was just sick.
I saw Robot Carnival and the Casshern OVA and noticed how they were similar. Since "Deprive" was sort of a tribute to that kind of anime it makes sense. Old but cool 80s music, almost no dialogue, and various robots made this a great movie. "Deprive" was my second favorite of the segments after A Tale of Two Robots.
Robot Carnival was the very first anime I ever saw. (Not including americanized stuff like transformers and speed racer) That was back when Sci-Fi channel used to show "Saturday anime". Robot Carnival, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Iria, Armitage, 8-man, Rojin Z, TONS of 80s classics. Geez, I was probably nine or ten, so that was seventeen years ago.
Sci Fi channel showed years ago when thay actually had a anime Saturday block. A influence on me, i'm watching this evening for a short story i'm doing over. ps - that alien looks like a rock refugee, may be why the music has that style.
Oh my god, I remember seeing this as a kid! Thanks man, it still looks as amazing as I remembered it. I recall trying to copy the art style for so long until finally giving up after a lot of frustration. Thanks a lot!
You can see that this wasn't just ANY "done on a whim" anime. The backgrounds are painstakingly painted, the animation still smoother than our MODERN, etc.
No matter what type of Creature you are on the outside, it's possible to Love and have Companionship with another Species. And if there is a Stronge enough Bond between the two they would Fight to Keep it.
Jeez, this is still my favorite bit of anime EVER. Period. The first bit of anime id ever seen was robot carnival, and this one blew me away, been watching anime since i was 13 and im 27 now, this one STILL blows me away.
Aw man I remember watching this for the first time when I was like 4 years old. I thought it was the most coolest thing ever xD Still loving it, even the music lol
I wonder what it is about Japan...how there take on animation is so utterly different than the wests at large. Hell, even their sound effects fascinate me. I'd love to know what sort of cultural aesthetic is required to see and hear and feel the world in a way that lends itself to this sort of presentation. Till then, I'm content with awe-filled appreciation for it.
This was always my favorite segment of the anime (besides the one about the inventer and the robot girl). I love how the rock music went real well with the fighting.:D
I am happy to see 'Deprived' from 'Robot carnival' featured on CZcams. At one point a very difficult video to acquire in Canada. I had to ask a relative in the U.S. to mail us a copy. Thank you for featuring this animated clip from that video - good memories.
This is one of the greatest animated science fiction shorts EVER. There are many elements of humanity and idealized life. Robot Carnival blows away the overblown Akira.
btw dont mind me but I think the movie of the story with the old man with his puppet girl was extremely powerful and left me with tears. Thus maybe surpasses Deprive. IMO.
I saw this for the first time on the Sci-Fi channel back in the 90s. I know this came out in 1987, but I didn't know about this until the 90s. Still though, this is a timeless classic.
The third movement (when he's fighting the robot in the bad guy's throne) is the single most epic anime song ever. To this day. The other parts aren't bad either, but that's simply the best.
you're right, it's a stereotypical sci-fi anime but compressed. They're using a few minutes to tell a story that could take 2 hours to develop. Pretty interesting how you're still able to pick up on the characters' roles and their relationships with one another.
I watched this when i was about 12 on the sci fi channel. I really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for uploading this. I cried from joy. I really look forward to the dvd release. Saw it in 1995 cartoon network saturday Japanime late night, and on Sci fi channel
Adventures in Japanese animation on SciFi in like 91, they showed robot carnival, vampire hunter d and Lensman that I recall. I became hooked.
Me too it was this, Lens man and vampire hunter d back to back and have been a fan of anime since
"I honestly don't think this one has any kind of meaning." Hey, it's the Hero's Journey.
"Deprive" should have been developed into a full anime series IMHO.
"Never give up. Always fight for your humanity no matter how much others try to deprive you of it and save/protect those you cherish with all that you are on the inside and out." This is extremely powerful too.

This has to be one of my favorite shorts for "Robot Carnival", along with Starlight Angel, A Tale of Two Robots, and Nightmare.
4:29 From that point all the way to the end... This song is fucking good !
This and Robotech was my introduction to anime.
"Deprive" should have been a movie, really.
The quintessential anime "good vs. evil" story, stripped down to its most impressive aspects and given the second greatest music in the medium for its genre.
Completely awesome. I agree with Loader2K1 - this should have been a series.
The quintessential: I have no idea whats going on, but i love it.
This is one of the stories from Robot Carnival that got my attention the most.
1997
i'm in front of my tv watching an anime/manga documentary which contains several shorts of "robot carnival". and suddently, THIS !!!!!
absentlive
toi meme tu sais !
And in Presence the robot ascends it's fragile, broken form to become.... something else.
The moral of this story: Never deprive a robot of its master. Otherwise, there will be hell to pay.
Even in the year 2024 that anime still kick ass I love the music and artwork and story
Cyber Dude went the distance for the one he loved.
all of this...lives in my head rent free
hey hey hey I grew up on this type of anime. Not only did have a morale behind it it had rockin animation to it and kickin musical track. Morale "fight for what you believe in" whether thats love, justice, whatever, just don't give up on what or who ya love or your dreams.
I love it.
A straight-forward 'damsel in distress' story with some crazy kick-ass action. What's not to like?
I agree. In my opinion many of the animes show what alot of actors cannot or simply will not attempt. A pure saturation of emotion into a character. Anime always show the evil on levels we can't comprehend or devotion that we just don't believe in. I think that's what happened to Heath Ledger. It shows love & devotion against huge odds.
This was pretty much just one, long, kickass AMV
at the 2.00 minute mark is one of the sickest scenes when he jumps off of his hover craft and the robot knocks his shades off thus revealing his face and he just keeps flying as if nothing happened, that was just sick.

I always wanted this Episode made into a Anime Series this is my favorite one out of the story's

A girl's best friend and protector is her robot . . . seriously, my throat always chokes up over this . . .
Oh my god, I remember seeing this as a kid! Thanks man, it still looks as amazing as I remembered it. I recall trying to copy the art style for so long until finally giving up after a lot of frustration. Thanks a lot!
another great short with music that goes great with the sotry.
deprive is definitely my favorite robot carnival! and the music just...rules.
You can see that this wasn't just ANY "done on a whim" anime. The backgrounds are painstakingly painted, the animation still smoother than our MODERN, etc.
This is my favorite one!
Whenever me and my friends play air guitar, we always hum the music from this anime ... It's just so rockin' eighties! XD
When i was a kid, i thought this was the coolest thing ever made
And it still is pretty damn kewl!!
I loved the music in this one...still do!
Joe Hisaishi always managed to compose some kickass anime scores back in the eighties. See Nausicaa and Venus Wars if you ever need further proof.
holy shit the music!
and the anime is awesome too!
No matter what type of Creature you are on the outside, it's possible to Love and have Companionship with another Species. And if there is a Stronge enough Bond between the two they would Fight to Keep it.
Jeez, this is still my favorite bit of anime EVER. Period. The first bit of anime id ever seen was robot carnival, and this one blew me away, been watching anime since i was 13 and im 27 now, this one STILL blows me away.
total action packed love story with a touch of foreshadow
Aw man I remember watching this for the first time when I was like 4 years old. I thought it was the most coolest thing ever xD Still loving it, even the music lol
Wow. Man, I grew up with this. It was still my favorite part of the show.
i think it's theme is about how robots can feel and the bond that can be created by it
sweetness!!! Most epic thing I've ever seen......from back then, that is...
When your rockstar boyfriend leaves you hanging, BOB to the rescue!
I still have this on VHS along with lensmen Project A-ko and the rest of the anime movies.
I first saw this in the 90's myself on video as a rental from Blockbuster Video. It took my breath away then, and it still does now.
I'm pretty sure the moral of this story is... Don't mess with a super-powered robot's main love interest!
Dude, I used to watch these back in the day( about the age of 8) I'm 23 now.
i dont know why i still come back here every couple of years...oh thats right, its bad ass!
That's some powerful hair gel! ;)
2:40 "hey thanks for burning my other clothes off. i look cooler in this outfit anyways" robot carnival is awesome!!
I remember watching this back in the early 90's, still one of my fav's to this day!
Wow! This is my favorite of the Robot Carnival anime shorts!!!
Sweet. I used to love this one! *tear* brings back memories.
The music is almost like a mix between old doom and sync music combined.. strange combo, but oddly enthralling.
This was always my favorite segment of the anime (besides the one about the inventer and the robot girl). I love how the rock music went real well with the fighting.:D
That explains a lot.
Like the fact that it's awesome.
Wow I love the villans hair. So 80's Radical
My favorite among the Robot Carnival Stories!!!!
Play a game with a friend. Blindfold them, start this, and dare them to tell you where the Hero arrives.
Anime. Emotively clear music.
I am happy to see 'Deprived' from 'Robot carnival' featured on CZcams.
At one point a very difficult video to acquire in Canada. I had to ask a relative in the U.S. to mail us a copy.

I have loved this from the first time I saw it . . . I cry every time I watch it, heroism born from love . . .. thanks for posting!
actually most of the robot carnival mini stories were left to interpritation. you sortof watch them and make up your own story. its a real fun concept
Maaaaaan, this was my favorite short out of the entire Robot Carnival movie!
Simply a love story.
I watch my anime I recorded on my vhs tapes every saturday morning. THIS stands as my favorite of all time.
you're right, it's a stereotypical sci-fi anime but compressed. They're using a few minutes to tell a story that could take 2 hours to develop. Pretty interesting how you're still able to pick up on the characters' roles and their relationships with one another.
the drawning style of this looks like the one the used in the first robotech serie; the macross saga.
Perfect Terminator-Cyborg-Mix Verry Nice Muzax too!!
Props!
awesome great short film
This had no talking, a lot of action. still a better plot than a lot if movies now.
Some should make this into a full anime movie. it would be awesome if done right and btw thanks for posting
this short is a metaphor of Grundge music fighting Glam rock
Interesting view.
THE MOST AWESOME MUSIC IN ANIME
Great music in this short, I listen to it all the time. Also, I love that pink laser dust attack that one of those big ogres uses.
The Robot Carnival CD was the first CD I had ever bought. I was in 10th grade I think. I love this whole movie!!! Why isn't it on DVD yet?
Hand-Drawn Perfection !!!
I LOVE ROBOT CARNIVAL U ROCK, THANK U!!
dang, i havent seen this in ages! just dug out the soundtrack from an old harddrive, you are right, its great, thanks for reminding me!
This was one of the first anime I loved when I was a kid!
Thanks for posting the RC videos. I wish it was out on DVD. Makes me want to break out my copies of Gall Force and Project A-ko!
This will be one of my favorite shorts including Franken's Gears and A Tale of Two Robots
Sci fi days i will always love
Ha :) The eye laser always made me laugh. It's so random. The robot carnival is so underappreciated.
So, basically, this is what would happen if Astro Boy was a gigachad. Easily my favorite Robot Carnival episode 😁
@dothedamnthang2 ME TOO MAN!! I saw this in the 6th grade and knew that illustration would be my passion
Wow, I haven't seen this segment in years! Awesome.
