Robot Carnival Opening

- It would seem that there aren't many die hard fans of this anime out there but luckily I'm one of 'em!
Robot Carnival was one of the first animes that I remember seeing. I guess I first saw it when I was about 9 and admittedly I didn't get what most of the shorts in this film were trying to say. Actually, I still don't get some of them. Most of them have messages in them, the message of the opening and ending being "The pomp and grandure of today will be the destruction of tomorrow." Or ... um ... Something like that! ^_^'
Anyway, please enjoy Robot Carnival.
I could burst in tears. I just traveled back in time. The sleeves in my school sweater, that girl Elba, that odd song with a robot singing "Every time I see you falling..." on the radio, the smell of brand-new of my Dad's Jetta, and my Mom who rests somewhere else for the time being.......1993 is so far away now. I just found one of many many ghosts in my memory I've been trying to chase since forever, just so I can get another piece of the puzzle.
Gayyy
destroying a town while carnival music plays in the background. well done japan.
"It simultaneously brings you pleasure and entertainment while relentlessly crushing your helpless village under it's massive treads and bombarding you with colorful and pleasant artillery"
Sounds like U.S. imperialism, doesn't it? Except there's nothing funny about it, unlike the deadly carnival in this silly animation.
@@henrirauhala4335 oh wow, you must be fun at parties.
@@rudiruttger I can't say myself really. What about you, do you usually watch animations at parties?
@@henrirauhala4335 Your reaction to it is the issue, however, discussing animations certainly takes place at parties. Should you have the occasion to appear at one you just might find out.
@@rudiruttger this isn't a party, it's comments on you tube. now let people say what ever they want to say without ridicule
I wish more challenge movies would happen, like this one. Such a simple idea to set a topic and select the top animators to do their take on the theme. I love Otomo's take on the childhood excitement of "the carnival is coming!", from joy to the terror of an automated carnival spreading devestation in it's wake!
I first saw his wen I was like 10 year old and to this day, its still one of my favorites.
I remember some of these having me in tears, especially the one called Presence.
Actually had it recorded on vhs but that's long gone now.
I remember seeing this on the Sci fi channel constantly on Saturday Mornings when I was a kid and other Anime shows.
This opening wrecks me with laughter every time I see it without fail. One of the single funniest things I have EVER seen.
"G'day" Boom
I remember watching this movie on sci-fi channel in 1990 for the first time, i was so amazed it was like no other cartoon i have ever saw. Still love it from this day!
With "Cannon fodder" in my opinion the two animation masterpieces of Otomo (and I have not forgotten the excellent "Akira").
Cannon Fodder doesn't get enough love! It's an artistic masterpiece.
Read about this on Wiki. At one point in time it was a grand spectacle as can be seen in the unedited ending from the historic stills. However, at the beginning of this story, it's now rusted and malfunctioning so it does the opposite of what it was originally intended for.
this was my childhood...Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
I watched this of the sci-fi channel about 11 years ago when sci-fi still did their sunday morning anime fests.
God what a good short film. I liked memories ( another good anime styled like this, in shorts ) because it reminded me of RC so much.
This was my first real exposure to anime as a kid. I remember being up late one night, laying in bed and flipping through channels. Just before turning off the TV, I saw this opening and was entranced. I had never seen anything like it and I haven't been the same ever since. ^_^
This is a pretty obscure one, but its a great intro for people who are unfamiliar with anime, because it involves several different artists portraying several different stories. You get a good range of anime's potential as art and as storytelling.
Thank you so much for posting this! I never thought I'd see these again. I remember watching it everytime they played it on the SciFi Channel's Anime hour (Saturday Anime and then when they moved it to Fridays). I saw it maybe three times and could never find the video or DVD, and I stumbled on these now as I was doing research for a major paper related to this, which is of course absolutely perfect timing. Thanks a bunch. It's like having a little piece of my childhood back :)
from the blurry depths of my childhood memory, I've been searching for this for a long time! it aired on saturday morning TV, and I never got the title. video stores thought I was mad trying to describe the bits and pieces of these shorts, trying in vain to look for it. thank heavens for the internet! this made my day. I'm gonna watch and enjoy. =)
I swear, that has to be one of the greatest openings to a movie I've ever seen.
Truly Classic. Thank you. I had not seen this in many years. It was also one of my first intros to Anime.
One of the anime that deserve 3D and 4K Remaster with Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision sound system, and deserves to be re-released in IMAX 3D and 4DX. This is the must see Sci-fi Anthology Anime if you are into anthology like :
Love Death + Robots,
The Animatrix,
Heavy Metal,
The Twilight Zone,
Star Wars Vision,
Batman Gotham Knight.
Robot Carnival deserves sequel.
Indian Jones is better bitch
There will never be anything that tops Robot Carnival.
By far the best animated movie ever made.
Without a doubt, the greatest achievement in anime history. Possibly animation as a whole.
Achievement of what
I love this entire movie, but this might be the best part. It's the music that really makes it. (Jo Hisaishi is like the John Williams of Japan.)
This was one of my first Japanese anime experiences too and I didn't get most of it, but I still thought it was cool and it still stuck with me. Thanks so much for putting it up! :)
Absolute best of anime. This is the peak of Japanese cartoons, people! Take it and enjoy it! This is the only reason I ever started watching anime!
I love that opening. this big amusement thing thing coming in and smashing everything, almost like something Monthy Phython could have thought up.
Thanks for uploading i really like Robot Carnival.
My favourit is the tale of two robots.
Joe Hisaishi (composer behind all of Miyazaki's films) actually conducted the music for "Robot Carnival" with the exception of 1 segment. :)
I'll never forget this I saw this when I was about 10 on channel 48 in philly. I remember calling the station asking if they would ever bring it on again and they said no probably not. I have always wanted to see this again though from beginning to end.
wow I remember this! I even think I was around Nine years old when I had seen it too. And then I had caught it again during the early days of Sci-fi channel where they also played Akira and Ghost in the Shell on Saturdays. Hell yes! to the 90's generation. lol
i loved this anthology of anime shorts! saw it when i was really young...it is still amazing even today.
I remember this fondly from when i was a kid. been searching for it forever but couldn't remember the name in the slightest, and when i'm searching for a mecha anime to watch, i finally find it. i think a tale of two robots and starlight angel were my favorites
Age: 12
Channel:TBS
When: Summer of 1995 Saturday night/Sunday morning 4am right after experiencing "Vampire Hunter D"....
Mind: Blown to all hell.
cartoon networks saturday anime
right after vampire hunter d and twilight of the cockroaches
You guys are speaking my language. THIS is the kind of anime I remember as a kid.
What a beautiful yet terribly tragic opening!
i have been looking for this for years. my mom had it on a vhs tape with the original vampire hunter d when i was young and i have searched all over thinking it was called robot circus.
this just made my night!!
This was actually one of the first animes that I ever watched. Loved it.
Another die hard fan signing in! I remember seeing this on the Sci-fi channel when I was in high school! My two favorite pieces were 'Deprive' and ' A Tale of Two Robots'!
I remember watching this on TNT or tbs in early mid 90s
Me too..
Cartoon Network hasn't shown this in more than a decade! (And this was back when CN was really worth watching.) Thanks so much for uploading this film!
I really loved it, even though I did feel sorry for those poor villagers...
This is the first anime I saw too,but I saw it when I first got cable back in the 80's. Now I'm a full fledged otaku... thanks Japan! :D
Oh, it's been too long since I saw this movie. Remember seeing it back when I was younger when Sci-Fi Channel had that Saturday Anime. I woke up early so I wouldn't miss a single minute of it, thanks for bringing up fond memories.
I've been looking for this Anima on DVD for several years now....this is one of the best.
dude i am also one of those die hard fans of this anime.
i fully appreciate you uploading this opening scene
Got this on VHS haven't got around to getting it on DVD or looking for it. Loved the short stories and the artwork.
I remember watching this on Cartoon Network probably like 16-17 years ago....this was one of the first anime's I had ever seen, right along with Vampire Hunter D and Twilight of the Cockroaches
This is a pure classic. I have been trying to find the english dvd version for years. I got a ripped copy for now but I continue to wait for the remastering and rerelease of Robot Carnival
Brilliant movie. Such great vision and execution of ideas and concepts.
holy shit dude! i'm so happy you have this anime here ! it means so much to me. . . !
dude robotech was the shiznits i bout cried when roy died but then again i watched it in the early 90s when i was like in first grade but still its my alltime fav anime still.
Look at that monstrocity its HUGE! and it saids Robot Carnival
Fantastic! Thank you so much for uploading this. I was wondering if I would ever get to see it when I thought, "Hey, maybe it's on CZcams..."
I remember watching this on the Sci-Fi channel (at least I think it was the Sci-Fi channel... not sure) back in the mid to late 80s real late at night and it was confusing as all hell but I enjoyed watching it. Didn't know that all the shows were Robot Carnival, I just thought it was random artists showing off their good work.
One of the best animes I've seen. Thanks so much for uploading these :D
First saw this on scifi channel years ago, back when scifi wasn't a steaming pile of shit. Downloaded it from torrents. Been happy ever since.
Maybe we should get a petition going, and post it on their website. Funimation, Disckotech, Sentai Filmworks, Bandai U.S. Manga Corp. whoever. Please release this great classic on DVD,before it is forgoten.
WoW WioW WoW WoW WoW WoW WoWeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!
A jugernaut of frenzy....And then....Gone.......
One of *THE WORLD'S BEST* openings of any anime anywhere!!!
Saw this first at a con years ago. Scored a VHS copy!
Love the screeching dancing dolls....
And then
Well...that escalated quickly. Apparently, this is set in a parallel reality where the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was sponsored by the Imperium of Man.
They don't make 'em like they used to kids.
And all will fear the day
When Robot Carnival arrives to the town
I agree completely, Entity4two. I loved this as a child and I owned the video but..it was ruined but now I found it on youtube! Yay!! x3
I remember seeing this on MTV along with Liquid Television when I was younger. Much younger.
Really, thanks for uploading this. I don't know where else to come by any Robot Carnival, so this is pretty much a Godsend.
Now that's some military grade entertainment...
I finally found it, thanks for uploading
I remember watching that on some godforsaken cable channel in the mid-80s…
I've always liked this film. I wish there was a R1 dvd release.
OMG!!!
Thank you for posting this I've been trying to find this for YEARS!
God damn right. Sci-Fi channel aired this, Akira, and Vampire Hunter D in a weekend or something and got me hooked on anime forever.
Yessssssireeeee! Reminds me of when my kuya BJ played thus for us on the VHS back then it was a wonderful day.
God i remember this thing from when i was alittle kid. Also the twilight of the cockroachs. I always wondered where i knew these scenes from but could never remember a name. Thanks alot.
this had to be one of the first animes i ever saw, and honestly i had no idea wtf was going on bc i was a young kid then
Saw this when it first came out in '87, and it's still consistently the most goddamned-ist funniest thing I have ever seen.
i visited when I read "there aren't many die hard fans of this anime." This has been one of my favorites for years. parts of the soundtrack used to be available free online but I can't find it any more.
Who would like to see a full version of this? By which I mean an anime movie based on the premise of this unstoppable juggernaut of joy and destruction and people having to live with it.
The music is composed by the same guy who does all the music for Hayao Miyazaki's films, Jo Hisaishi, in case anything sounded familiar. ; )
This feels like something out of 40k
Another die hard fan here, just haven't seen it in a long time!!
My dad, mom and sister were all crushed under the tracks that day. I was gone on a trip to Ontario, Canada. I think i would be happier now if i would have died with them.
YESS! i just remembered this from middle school!
Lies - Robot Carnival was AWESOME. Wish I could find it on DVD or something...
Cloud & Tale Of Two Robots are my faves! Thanks for sharing!
I loved this anime!!!!
I can't agree with you more, Robot Carnival was one of the first animes that I remember seeing too. I guess I first saw it when I was about 9 too and admittedly I didn't get what most of the shorts in this film were trying to say either. the message of the opening and ending being "The pomp and grandure of today will be the destruction of tomorrow." but that was when the concepts of robotics were in the theoretical stages an robots were the concepts of Sci-Fi.
As a matter of fact, I think that Ghost in the Shell, Gunn Mu, Rock Man, Gundam, Heavy Metal, etc might have been my inspirations for pursuing engineering in the first place. ( A bit sad and disturbing really.)
hey man thanks a lot to upload this kind of anime, the real pieces of art of this gender like vampire hunter d XD
anime its the best thing ever, manga its far beyond.
Robot Carnival it's was animated by Atsuko Fukushima (wife of Koji Morimoto).
Whoa... it's been a while.
I remember seeing this on Sci-Fi.
My mom had taped it for me, but I lost it.
Thnx for upload man.
OMg Thank you for posting this up this is my first anime that ever watched
Be careful; another user had uploaded all the parts, and their account was suspended. That said, this was the first anime I ever saw, and I loved it!
this along with the "cockpit" is some of the very best anime in the world
I Fell In-Love with this Shit YEARS ago...,!!!!!!
I Agree with GreenBeardsRevenge.
Love this when Sci-Fi had this one Akira, Lensman, Odin, Casshaun, 8 Man After, and others on their Saturday mourning anime,
o.o omg i thought id never see this again. i remember seeing it when i was lil on a vhs tape that mom recorded it on, and well..who has a vhs...
@Entity4two YOU my friend, have said EVERYTHING I had been thinking in regards with today's animation studios and encapsulated that into one beautifully coherent statement that I COULDN'T agree with more. I look at what's on television today and what my younger siblings only know and I weep for them. They are robbed of the childhood I had been privy to. Now I'm collecting all the DVDs and VHSs I can so that I can show them to my son when he's old enough to talk.
Seems when robots commit genocide they like to make it as festive as possible.
I agree completely, Entity4two. I loved this as a child and I owned the video but..it was ruined but now I found it on youtube! Yay!! x3 Plus I loove the music, its amazing
Thank you for uploading, I can't find this anywhere.
I like the references to Western Imperialism invasions - the carnival music, bombs, and machine-like massiveness... notice how the doll figures jumping from the machine resemble paratroopers flying from bomber planes?
All of us were. Fond memories. Though, I would always switch between Sci-Fi and the International Channel's anime block.
Still, those were some of the good days of anime.
I personally think it's haywire, and glitched technology from an era of prosperity. A vessel built for pleasure, now Ironically turned against it's human creators.
My copy went missing 10 years ago T_T
Thanks for uploading!
