How Girls Und Panzer Uses Minimal Dialogue to Make Great Action Scenes

  • An aspect of Girls Und Panzer's awesome action scenes, especially the climactic ones at the end of the first season and Der Film, which is often overlooked, is just how little dialogue is present. This is a strength for these scenes, and it's an excellent demonstration of storytelling through the visuals and the audio.
Here, I take a look at both of these scenes, and talk about why this was such a good choice, leading to these being among the best battles you'll see in any show.

Observe and understand is definitely what the series wants you to do. It's why when Miho and Maho talk at the end of the movie, you can't hear any dialogue nor do you need to. It's almost like you are one of Miho's friends too, watching from afar.

Yeah, absolutely no reason why we need to be hearing those specific orders being given. We can see the results of those orders with our own eyes.

It was once said somewhere that the original creators didn't intend for the series to explode as much as it did.
But time and time and time again, all evidence points to the fact that they put huge amounts of effort into every little detail, even getting into a disagreement that delayed the first season by a week, hence the filler episode.
Part of those issues they overcame probably contributed to Anzio being in an OVA.
What I really wish they would do now is go into the side stuff, all the other schools,Little Army I and II,Ribbon Warrior, the various high quality fan works which explained the prequel, and then a little wrap showing the future where they've gone to college and the like.
They could also explore the tangents of the other outrageous clubs they had.

I think this series is HIGHLY underrated. Some people just see another cute girl anime in military hardware. But theres so many layers in this series that definitely needs to be appreciated more.
Also, its just plain fun to watch. Whether your a military history nut (like me) or just a fan of action anime.

This entire fight felt like a samurai duel or cowboy standoff, the moment Miho realized Maho was trying to fire at her from behind then quickly rammed her to stop Maho's gun felt like slamming someone's sword back in the scabbard or gun back in the holster in a choreographed hand to hand type scene- it was amazing and all the quiet had me beyond tense even a little scared for the outcome, them cooperating in Der Film was that feeling x100

An another thing what I love in gup is, that it can make long, 20 minute action scenes without boring parts.

Yeah, it's a harder thing to pull off than most people would expect, and GuP does it perfectly, every time. I don't think any other film has or could pull off a nearly hour-long battle scene like we got in Der Film.

Absolutely amazing analysis! I really want to add more to this, but I'd just be repeating what you said. But you are right, the lack of dialogue was perfect in both scenes and just goes to show how amazing both scenes, and the anime as a whole, are compared to most other anime. Minimal dialogue is needed, and just so it's not completely silent other than the fight, and that works to better immerse us into the fight as real combat isn't between to chatterboxes. It's like you said, a dual between master chess players. And both fights show that in spades and were the absolute perfect closes to both their battles. Thanks for the analysis and I can't wait for the next one.

I dodged this show for a decade, because so many of the cute girl/military hardware mashup series are such duds (in my unworthy opinion). I'm so glad my friends steered me toward it at long last. It's one of my favorite shows. So well written, so full of history buff fan service and inside jokes, wonderful characters, and action scenes good enough to leave you with goosebumps. It's so much greater than it has any right to be.

then there's chivalry of a failed knight which manages to chill you with 10000% dramatic dialogues, epic music, and a "fight" scene with absolutely 0% fighting at all.

I believe the literary or theatrical principle is “show, don’t tell”. It’s one thing to notice the details, but another thing to recognise what is being relayed and the significance of the event. It risks causing confusion among casual watchers or those with less knowledge of the world-building, but success at understanding these details gives the rare pleasure akin to finding Easter eggs in the media.

Another Great thing about GuP is it being an Animated Art Form. If it was a Live action series. The only tanks They'd be using are M4 Shermans, T-34s, and modified Cold war tanks, and Getting the only Operational BT-42 to run is Hard, Risky and Expensive, and Trying to get a real working VK.45 Porsche Tiger is down right impossible. Also they'd have to be extremely delicate with the tanks as they are a part of History and I wouldn't want them to be Severely Damaged. Also the Fact that it's and Anime mixed in with Really good 3D models with Cartoony esthetics make the viewer get immersed in the Situation and Not Snap back into reality when seeing Bad CGI.

Yeah, Girls Und Panzer is something that really only works in an animated format. To do something like this in live-action they'd probably end up dressing up Shermans or other easily sourceable tanks as other models. Or they'd have to CGI them, making the fact that it's live-action pointless.

When watching GuP matches I always find myself on the edge of my seat, even though the outcome of the match may seem obvious, I can't help but get extremely invested in all the action, I think a lot of that has to do with what you've presented in this video. Excellent analysis.
