    Amen. Southern Chicken and Dumplings is dumplings, chicken, and lots of black pepper. None of this celery carrots and gnocchi. That’s chicken stew. Lol.

    I had a 5 foot 2 inch Mom who had chicken coup outside behind the garage. She had a big stump where she
    Chop the head off and it was in a vacant lot an that chicken would run around all over that lot. But she made the best dumplings (flat). I love that you brought up that memory. It is one that I will never forget that. I was about 6 years old at that time. I am now 79 and still can see this in my mind. The dumplings I make just like you.
    The south can cook. Thanks

      Thank you very much for sharing that...It is part of a by gone era where raising chickens, gathering eggs and even an occasional chicken for dinner was a common chore. I guess it's easier now though..LOL thanks for watching and commenting.

    When I see a recipe for chicken and dumplings, and the cook includes peas; carrots; onions etc. I just want to cry.
    My mom makes and her sister made, the best Chicken and Dumplings ever. I followed a combination of their recipes a few years ago in my Crock-Pot. My cousin Kathy told me they were as good as our mothers' recipes. Best compliment on my cooking EVER!

    believe it or not, in a jiffy you can slice up some flour torillas and add them to the soup and stock at the end. Let them cook a few minutes and they blow up and turn into some amazing chicken n dumplings. Also for some added flavor, start out by sauteeing some diced onion, celery, and carrot.

    FINALLY a chicken and dumplings recipe on CZcams that does NOT include carrots, celery, peas etc. This looks like my own dear, sweet Mom's. Now I want to call her and ask if she used/uses Bisquick.
    Her sister would add a chopped, boiled egg. The highest compliment I have ever received for the little bit of cooking I do is when my cousin, Kathy, told me that my chicken and dumplings was better than her mother's. BTW, I made mine using frozen dumplings--forgive me.
    The ONLY reason I prefer to watch other Instant Pot C & D recipes, is they're usually done by cute blonde women. But, I like your recipe way more.

    Yes chicken thighs are my choice as well. I also add about 1/4 cup of chopped fresh celery, and a throw in about two, 4 inch pieces leeks these add more flavor with little extra effort. If I don't have celery I will use 1/2 can of cream of celery soup and also I use the cream chicken soup if needed.

    Made chicken and dumplings in my ninja again tonight. This time they came out perfect. First time I made them. Some scorched. So this time I done it different. Made sure my biscuts for the dumplings was cut up first. While chicken was cooking. Then after I let the steam out. Turned it on Saute. Let it boil, turned it down to medium. Let them cook for like 1 minute or so. I used better than boulion broth paste it is so good in it. I love cooking dumplings in this now. :)So easy and quick.

Funny....they had a chicken coop too. lol And one of my earliest memories is also of a chicken running around with it's head cut off. That's an image that sticks with you no matter what. I seem to remember being somewhere I was told not to be when it was done. John, excellent video (as all yours are) and this is just like my grandmother and mom made them - well, they didn't use a Ninja or Bisquik, but otherwise. . . And my grandmother also killed the chicken - by wring their necks. I would suggest trying some milk in a jar with a couple of spoons of flour to thicken the broth. And probably just a matter of degree, but I've always found my dumplings (or 'dumplins') needed more time to sufficiently cook for my taste. But again, each family had their own preferences. Again, thanks so much for your recipes and the cheerful, homey feel. Best to you, Diane

    Alot of people also like potato dumplings, not just flour dumplings. Well, I started thinking.....what about a potato/flour dumpling? And I've been successful using potato flakes. Use 50/50 ratio and they are the best of both worlds.

    And in eastern NC and S.C., they have something they call “Chicken and Pastry” which is probably a modern version of flat chicken pastry, but actually is pretty wide noodles. Kinda odd, as I was used to traditional chicken n’ dumplings.

    • @JohnSanders
      @JohnSanders  Před 5 lety

      They do have a point because it could be considered pastry and like I say in the video' everybody's dumpling is different, I think mine is smaller and not as long as most peoples but it is all preference which makes everybody's a little unique and in my opinion changes the whole experience...but as you said you were used to one thing and even if theirs was really good it wasn't what you were expecting..anyhow, I guess I went a little long on that explanation but thank you for watching and commenting!!!

    As one can prob tell based on comments, etc... been binge-watching some of your older videos today. That said, O..M..G..... YUM! Am right there with ya about the veggies, add-in's, etc. I've had many versions of chicken broth w/ like little won-ton's added in, or.... even some bake thing w/ biscuits on top... even a chicken/dumpling w/ spaetzle type dough in it & the long(er) 'dumplings' (which, by taste... imho, were more like noodles. At least the ones I had anyway) Haven't had even close to an authentic chicken & dumplings since I was a very young girl. SO.... you get 'em started & I'll be on my way from Chicago. I usually add about 1/4 to 1/2(max) teaspoon of poultry seasoning to my Bisquick dough before making it into dumplings. It gives the dumplings a little more flavor rather than the sort of bland taste of just the cooked dumpling dough ...but don't put in too much because you don't want it overpowering that smooth and delicious flavor of the chicken ...which it can do, then you're stuck with it. Sorta like adding too much salt to a stew...ya can't take it out once you've put it in. I enjoy your videos...enough so that I bought my own Ninja Foodi Delux. I'm using it a lot now. My kitchen stove keeps asking me "Hey, what gives...don'cha luv me anymore?" LOL! Keep it up, and thanks!
