  • On phone with UPACK to notify them of this massive security flaw that allows anyone with a socket or wrench to effortlessly bypass your locked moving container. Their phone rep claimed I was wrong because no one in 20 years has complained. They claimed there is no major security flaw. Access your locked U-Pack relocube without key or combo -"feature not a bug"

    I used two of these for my move and the bolts were in the correct position, not like yours. Mine had the bolt on the inside so couldn't be unscrewed when my lock was on it. You just needed to flip your bolt, which was installed backwards. Easy, easy fix.

      This is an older vid. They have changed the design since

  • @whatisrealknowtheformula6137

    They store them adjacently with the doors facing each other so the first tool needed would be a forklift. I was curious about this, too, so I drove out and verified at a storage facility. This is why you can’t access them if you are storing over a longer period of time.

    Thank you, I decided to cancel my reservation after seeing this and as you said they didn't believed it or care much for it. Instead, their argument was "But our cubes are made of metal and other companies don't even have that", which is completely useless if my stuff is 1 bolt away from getting stolen.

    The funny part is the bolts are smooth on the inside. If they just flipped them around, the flaw would be completely fixed.
    But then again, that would mean they couldn't get into your stuff after you lock the container.
    You've got to remember: the vaults were never meant to save anyone.

    U-PACK and ABF Freight (an Arcbest company?) were less than grateful to me for tipping them of their security defect. They denied it on the phone. Insisted I was mistaken but that he didn't have a lock in front of him to argue this and that they were inclined to believe I was wrong because 20 years and no one else brought it up.
    After being brushed off I shared a video so they could see just how serious and real the problem was and hopefully that would get them to acknowledge it was real and it needed to be fixed and so failing that too, consumers could protect themselves.
    Their response was to breach our contract which they had been told, was not feasible to replace them at this point and would incur significant damages. When they told us they'd be violating the terms of our contact they were reminded how that would be very damaging to us and asked why they would do this: they said "Because you made a CZcams video of our company so now we're "canceling" your move. My wife reminded the company that she is pregnant and how damaging and stressful this malicious intent of the company is and they made it very clear that they don't care. They are retaliating by breaching contract to exact damage on us for exercising first amendment right and sharing honest experience and information in a PSA so upack and ABF would KNOW the problem is real not imagined so they could fix it and while not holding my breath: so consumers could protect themselves.
    Is this a company you want to do business with? A company that retaliates against its customers for speaking up, being honest and sharing their experience with other consumers so that they can make sure they're protecting themselves, even when the company doesn't. A company that didn't honor their agreements contacts or promises? A company that would seek to damage anyone for speaking up. A company that will attack a pregnant woman because her husband tried to point out a gaping engineering defect in their product that puts many of their customers at risk!? So much for expecting them to do the right thing.
    U-Pack and ABF Freight....
    A very Stalinesque corporate culture for companies doing business in America.
    I'd go with packrat PODS Uhaul or any one of a number of other portable storage and moving companies. If U-Pack worked half as hard on competently engineering and assembling their fleet as they do silencing whistle blowers with abusive business practices and not honoring their commitments and contractusl agreements it might not be so horribly negligent in security and customer relations.

      I was hoping to use PODS but they don't service my final destination. Overall, you're a great guy for sharing this concern with the public and corporate. Their loss is your potential gain. Maybe you should get a patent for a security proof storage container..before anyone else steals your idea. What is the size of the socket..can somebody use a socket head cap or cover to deter thieves?

  • @bartofilms

    Darn, I just ordered 2 of these for my move... Just one thing. This looks like an oversight by assembly person. Why don't you just reverse the bolt, so nut is on the inside? I think this would take less than 5 minutes, depending on how many bolts are installed that way. Anyone else agree?

    • @searphhoney
      @searphhoney Před 5 lety

      How much did yours cost?

    • @bartofilms
      @bartofilms Před 5 lety +7

      @@searphhoney $1400 from SFO to SEA. $1800 for two containers. I elected to tow about 1/3 of my stuff myself so needed only 1 cube. 12' U-Haul Trailer for that was $400. Happy to be done with it. ABF was great. My cube did not have the bolts facing the wrong direction.

    I think I would peen the bolt ends. They might not like it but it would help make it more secure.

    It's funny you say this. I noticed this right away.
    Not a single person in 20 years, huh?
    Btw, this circumvention can itself be circumvented by wrapping a chain around the two locking bars and pad-locking it. Just a heads up.

      His bolt was flipped. I used the service; bolts were opposite with them on the inside, not able to undo when locked. Not sure what happened to his cube.

    I shared this with one of their employees and he didn't realize there was a design flaw. He mentioned that the cube would be in controlled access between customer's residence (if they're home), their warehouse, and final destination. It would have made sense to have those socket pieces welded or have the accessible socket points in a covert location. Do you have a temporary solution to this design flaw? Corporate won't jump on a permanent fix because it would cost more to replace the flaw
    ..or have a new security designed storage container. Thanks for sharing!

    • @amariev226
      @amariev226 Před 2 lety

      His bolt was backwards. I used two and they came with the bolts flipped with them unable to be removed from the inside when locked. Not sure what happened with his cube.

    wow so much money for these crates for so little protection😺. Love how these companies mass produce literal shit. If they see a problem in the beginning why not fix it and avoid it in the long run?😂 I HATE when companies “approve there products and that they provide protection for your belongings ” then the shit gets stolen a couple weeks later...half of these companies are a joke man☠️

      In some businesses, physical or cybersecurity tends to not be considered in the design and implementation phase. and those who suffer are the customers...
