- If you've been following my series debunking Discovery Institute, the Christian propaganda mill, you know about Gunter Bechly. I debunked him twice, as have several of my colleagues, and he decided to have a tantrum about it on the DI's blog called "Evolution News". In his post, he hurled insults at Aron Ra and Erika from Gutsick Gibbon, due to their debunking of some unrelated creationists, and he lumped them in with myself, Jackson Wheat, and Dapper Dinosaur, referring to us collectively as "deplorable ilk". The projection is strong with this silly little German! Well what could be better than assembling the fearsome fivesome to tear through Gunter's pathetic antics? Join us for a fun conversation!

I got out of YEC a long time ago - 1980. The irony is that I was majoring in Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University (affiliated with the fundamentalist Christian denomination called the Church Of Christ) in Abilene, Texas. I took an astronomy course to fulfill science credit requirements, and that professor taught the actual science (no YEC pseudoscience). Studying the actual science of astronomy in detail made me realize just how false young earth creationism really is.
@@steveg1961 i was fortunate enough to get my degree in medical science that focuses on genetics and pathology, but the YEC indoctrination ran so deep it wouldn’t allow me to accept what I was reading about evolution. It wasn’t until I saw Professor Dave’s debate with James Tour that the scientist in me finally kicked in and I realized just how nonsensical these fundamentalist beliefs actually are. It’s been so liberating and I’ve been vigilantly deconstructing since.
@@kyle19939 If I may ask, what did it mean specifically that it "wouldn't allow you to accept" things? I'm loosely familiar with the idea of cognitive dissonance, which I assume is what you're describing, but I want to understand it better if I can, especially so that I can help people in positions like yours to break out into truth even sooner. What were you thinking when information like this came up, and what might you try to say to your past self now that you've had your eyes opened?
@@riluna3695 well, the reason evolution was so difficult to accept was because I lived in rural South Dakota for such a long time and it was so common for people including friends and family to believe in things like Noah’s ark and Adam and Eve.
In my head I thought “evolution can’t be true with all of these other believers, the believers are seeing something that I am not. Creationism is just as valid as evolution” even when it so obviously was not. I had this constant reinforcement that creationism was true from pastors and family so it was pretty deeply ingrained.
But even reading through evolution in school I only accepted the material that allowed me to do my job, and I refused to accept the material that supported large-scale evolution. To be fair since my degree was in healthcare we mostly just focused on genetics and disease in humans, not as much the evolutionary aspect but we still got some.
I just called it nonsense in my head and said we didn’t have enough evidence for it. I figured since there were still Christian scientists and smart people like Kent Hovind (🤦♂️) that also have intelligent scientific theories about creationism as they have a whole museum (🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️), then creationism is still valid.
When a series of events caused me to start struggling with my faith a few years down the road I didn’t have a clear answer in my head in regard to creationism anymore. I decided to finally settle this and look for real answers about creationism and Christianity by talking with scholars and watching educational content like Professor Dave Explains (also literally just reading the Old Testament).
Watching the debate between Dave and Tour was what really clicked for me. I was finally able to see what happens when the evangelical echo chamber I had grown up in for so many years was challenged by a competent scientist and I felt like a moron for actually believing this creationist stuff for so long. It was the beginning of my actual deconstruction.
If I had to say something to my old self I’d probably tell him to not accept everything you hear just because people say it’s true. Find evidence to support the claims themselves.
@@kyle19939 Thank you so much for taking the time. This has been very helpful. I guess I've been underestimating the sheer power of the idea that "well I'm sure someone out there knows better". Frankly I'm likely guilty of the same myself, in small pockets scattered about my worldview. Though I do my best to ensure that anything important that's been actively challenged (as opposed to "we dunno yet") gets equally actively researched, so I know for sure where it counts. But sometimes the brain just wants to rest and say "meh, someone else has got it."

I don't know if you'll see this Dave, but I really can't thank you enough for what you do for the science community. Because of people like you, I'm able to intelligently explain why creationists are wrong. I grew up in an evangelical conservative household where the mere thought of believing science over their religion would have gotten me punished. I didn't feel like I had a voice growing up and you've really helped me feel like I have, not only the ability, but the right to speak up and defend objective scientific facts. I really wish someone would walk these creationists through the math of evolution. It is great to talk about individual fossils and such, but I think the best way to go about this is to at least start with the math. To show that, as a general concept, evolution must be true. The only real question is how specifically it happened.
Get them to admit physics and math are real, then walk through the consequences of this, AND THEN talk about individual fossils/lineages/etc. Lay the ground work to demonstrate how of course evolution is true, we are just figuring out which ideas are what actually happened and which ideas are “simply” internally consistent theories
The "Creation Myths" channel just published (a couple of weeks ago?) an excellent, very detailed takedown of the YEC claim of "genetic entropy." The two scientists totally get "down and dirty" into some of the details of the mathematics of population genetics, and destroy YEC's genetic entropy claim from the ground up. I highly recommend the video.
But you're wrong at the end there. Creationists don't/won't acknowledge that they're wrong - which is why they keep right on promoting their cornucopia of bogus pseudoscience claims after they've been debunked for decades.

Obviously the creationists don’t want to engage with reality. The point of this is to show to their general audience (ie - not the other hardcore creationists that follow them but the people who just watch for the entertainment/are only passively engaged with the material/etc) how believing in math and physics necessarily precludes creationism.
This would be for the part of their audience that can still be reached, not for the creationists themselves
The assumption that creationsist are in it to find out about reality is a mistake.
It's all about psychological needs.
Anything they conceive as stabilizing to their core-beliefs is permissable, all else will be dismissed.
"I feel it therefore it's true" is the method by which this works.
Presenting facts only serves as invitation to either feel attacked or engage in further mental gymnastics.
This really is the Justice League, just the best creators ı know and ıdolize thank you again for pushing back against religious beliefs and promoting science, logic and reason.
