My father was a big Ali fan, at that time I was 8 years old and here in Germany the fights were always late or early times. this was the 1st fight I was allowed to watch.for me, these were world events! many many thanks Muhammad Ali❤
Again, I was in the Garden that night. Ali tried punching, but you can't change a guy who's only an arm puncher who wins by cuts & TKO's. Joe Frazier's a real fighter, who comes to win and to punch as hard as the best of them. No matter how pro-Ali the broadcasters called it for Ali, I saw the fight and Frazier won it just as the score cards said. Boxing had to change boxing gloves to laceless and thumbless due to Ali, who rakes & punches to the eyes and hopes to win on cuts. Case closed.
This is so awesome. This event took place just a couple of months before I turned two years old. So my dad had probably watched this classic between Ali and Frazier but I was already in bed🤣🤣

48 years ago today. What a great fight! What a great era in boxing. Too bad Howard Cosell wasn't calling this fight though. Ali and Howard go together like Ali and Smokin' Joe.
After hearing of Ali's Death, I had to watch his three fights against Joe Frazier and his fight against Foreman. This first fight against Frazier was absolutely brutal. No wonder its considered as one of the greatest fights of all time. The heart, will-power and stamina of both were incredible. Frazier was just relentless in his attacks from beginning to end. They both fought until utter exhaustion. It was sheer just will-power that kept them on their feet. After watching all four fights, I think I have figured out Muhammed Ali's most important fighting strategy - He never goes for body shots. He focuses exclusively on head shots. That's a very clever strategy, since the only way you can knock a person out is by hitting his head, so why waste energy on body shots? Plus if the brain gets too many knocks, it gets tired, and when the brain gets tired, the body follows.
You are mistaken. A left to the vagus nerve (kidney/liver) will put a fighter out as well. Ali was an unconventional fighter. Headhunting is usually a mistake of younger boxers.
Liza Pierce Can't believe it can be a mistake, especially when there is an angle of punch which is guaranteed to knock out a person (this is the punch that took Ali down in this fight) - punching upwards at the jaw line of the back lower jaw. In martial arts it is known as a pressure point which knocks out a person. Ali wasted no energy whatsoever going for the body, he only went exclusively for the head. No wonder all his opponents had swollen faces by the end of the match. So I can't believe it can be a bad strategy. Sure worked for Ali.
It suited Ali because he was primarily a long range fighter - because of his height & reach - & if he went for body shots he would've fallen into his opponent's range of fire. But what suited Ali doesn't suit most other fighters. If you hurt an opponent its still better to set up your head shots with a body attack, & sometimes vice versa, & Ali probably passed up a lot of KOs by failing to go to the body. I agree with you that Ali was naturally suited to the style he chose. As a point of interest watch his fight with Al Blue Lewis. After the first few rounds Ali surprised everybody by adopting a more conventional style for the rest of that fight...

"He fired the wrong sparring partner. I got an informer in his camp..... he fired the wrong man the real one is still there and it’s up to him to find out who it is" I was dying the way he said that.
Ken Norton was the other sparring partner. The one that Joe Frazier didn't fire. That same Ken Norton fought Muhammad Ali a short time after this fight with Frazier. Norton broke Ali's jaw and won the fight handing Ali his second loss. So I guess Ken Norton really wasn't the informer working for Ali, and Joe Frazier really did fire the correct person.
This fight is one of the best fights of all time, but who ever was in charge of the replay cilps between rounds was terrible, ol' Lancaster kept waiting for replay comments that never happened, and what was replayed was not the best action of the rounds.
Joe was on a mission……he’d trade 3-4 punches for landing 1 or 2 left hooks anytime. His punches did more damage. Ali totally underestimated Joe and he made him pay. The 15th round knockdown was the icing on the cake. One of the greatest fights in history.
Yup, bobbing, weaving, peek a boo style; I would say Tyson did it even better than Frazier; Tyson ducked quicker and avoided alot of contact compared to Frazier.
Having watched last nights fight. I remembered watching Joe Frazier fight Ali in august 1971. If you know the history of both the above men, you make a choice. Joe Frazier was the best of everything a Man can be. A world class champion. A good and decent Man. Wrongly, ultimately a broken Man. But the very best a man can be. He destroyed Ali in 1971, he was winning in 2nd fight until he was blinded but still wanting to carry on. The greatest heavy weight boxer ever, never acknowledged……………Smokin Joe Frazier. I saw 🥊🥊🥊🥊💝💝😘
Ali often hit his opponent on the head. So another face appeared on Fraizer's face. On the other hand, such an effect was not seen on Ali's face, since a blow was also struck on his body. Because he was tall and would pull his head back, and he would get a lot of blows on the back of his neck.
Muhammad Ali landed more jabs but he only rarely really hurt Frazier. Joe Frazier after the first couple of rounds took the fight to Ali the whole time and you could tell that his punches were rattling and hurting Ali. Frazier went hard to the body and the head the whole game, was just relentless and that's why he got the win. Not to mention Frazier used Ali like a punching bag in the 15th and just whaled the piss out of him.
Right, and Ali walked away with a hurt jaw and Joe ended up in the hospital for various issues. You clearly don't know the history of this fight or Ali's boxing prowess. Know facts my man. Joe paid a heavy price after this fight. A beautiful one at that. It is always a shame that someone had to lose this fight.
That 11th round - even when he's shook he makes it wild and unusual and awesome. Two greats, right here, displaying the definition of the word. But the sequel is better.
A prime Mike Tyson fought very similar to Frazier. Yet most would agree Tyson hit harder than Frazier and was explosive with both hands and not just his left (like Joe). Mike would've given Ali some trouble but I still feel Ali would win over Tyson. (A PRIME Ali). By late round knock-out.
In my youth we were huge fans of Ali. As an older adult, I've been much more critical of Ali. In this fight however, I think Ali won easily. I can only give Frazier rounds #8,...#11,...and #15.............rd.#13 was pretty close, but I still gave it to Ali. Frazier had aggression on his side, and some might take credit away from Ali for holding. In my opinion, those things weren't nearly enough to make Frazier the winner. With the exception of round#8 when Ali was playing with baby punches, a round that he rested and gave away, he clearly landed more punches each and every round. I think Frazier was dominated early so that when he got into the fight a little more, he was given some rounds that he didn't deserve on the strength of becoming competitive. Ali consistently landed 2,3, and 4 punch combinations while Frazier moved forward and landed nothing. When Frazier landed a hook it got everyone's attention, but more than half of those hooks didn't land solid. They grazed Ali's face, hit him on the neck or shoulders, many of them looked good but missed completely. Ali threw shorter punches that you could see landing, and you could hear them thud on Frazier's head. Ali landed with both hands throughout the fight, while Frazier landed very few rights to the head. The left hooks Frazier landed solid were strong punches but few in number, especially compared to the constant combinations he was taking. Several times Ali hit Frazier and knocked him sideways off balance, indicating the punches were solid. I would have made the fight closer if Frazier was given 2 points for the 11th and 15th rounds, as is the case in today's scoring. The fact that those 2 big Frazier rounds only gained him a single point means that Frazier lost by a wide margin in my opinion. I would scored it 11-3-1 for Ali; I just didn't see Frazier land enough punches. There were a few rounds whereby Frazier landed 1 or 2 big left hooks that got the attention of the crowd and the commentators, but Ali dominated the rest of those rounds. A couple of hard left hooks and a few body shots don't make up for 15 or 20 solid head shots in my view. Overall a great fight, both guys put out maximum effort. a lot of action, far more than most heavyweight fights in the current era. compare this fight to the fight between klitschko and Fury;........Please,.........an absolute embarrassment,...... a snooze ffestival by 2 clowns..................
This never gets old. ,,,But,, this is PEAK Frazier. The greatest victory of anybodys career. He left it all. Ali a warrior,,,but not the man that fought Liston,Patterson, or Williams...toe the greatest battle of all time. Joe won @ absolutely surprised Ali. He took Ali to a place he thought he would never be.
I had always thought Frazier won, but Ali won this fight. Never really looked at it from a scoring standpoint until now. Probably landed twice as many punches or more, and many more power punches, though Frazier landed many more devastating punches. Maybe 7 of the first 8 rounds and 12-14. Ali clinched a lot and he should've been deducted a point because he was warned early about holding behind the head. But he still won the fight. The judge that scored it 11-4-1 was on drugs.
Boxing is not scored on who lands the most punches. It would sound like a basketball score. It is also is who the aggressor, who takes the fight to the other one. When one is constantly against the ropes and you are making a lot of clinches and holding the back of the head like Ali does in just about all of his fights. The referee warned him a couple of times about that one time it was obvious in the early rounds. To me that is not an artful form of defense, but just trying not to get hit. Ali did land more punches, but was not in control of most of the rounds. That deducts from my way of scoring. I have heard Ali admit Joe won the first of the three fights. I scored it 9 rounds to 6 for Frazier. In a 10 point must system it would have been 145 for Frazier and 141 for Ali. The 15th round would have been scored 10-8 for Frazier for the knockdown.
A much, much, better fight than the more highly touted "Thrilla in Manila". Ali was in total control of that fight. In this one, the winner was in doubt until the last round. A great fight.
Ali Channel, Thanks for this magnificent fight. Both men making great efforts but Joe a worthy winner for his sheer aggression. Ali not as nimble in the ring as normal and resorting too much to 'holding'.
i ve seen the fight more than ten times and i feel it closer to a draw.the score cards at the end where really unfair for ali.Frazier gave also one of the greatest fights of all times but he also took a huge beating no matter if he had the enorous heart to keep going and punching deadly blows
Frazier lost Ali out pointed him. However during that time Ali was not liked very much due to his religion, and politics. Nevertheless that fifteenth round knockdown is what made it easier for the judges to award Frazier the fight. Throughout the fight Ali landed at least five punches to Frazier's one. Also what a lotta people don't understand is Joe Frazier was an above average man most men would have been knocked out by those barrage of combinations. Joe Frazier lost twelve pounds in the ring that night, and stayed in the hospital a month immediately after the fight. The will, and desire of Smokin Joe Frazier was God like 🤜 Ali had a record of 31 wins 25 by knockouts at that time which means contrary to popular belief he knocked out, or got the fight stopped because his opponents were taking to many combinations 🤜 Some say the damage Frazier took in his fight against Ali is what made it easier for George Foreman to beat him in 73. Although I still don't believe Frazier would have beat George Foreman his style was perfect for big strong Powerful George Foreman to beat.
@@stanleyadams2046 nope, joe won, even ali admited years later that no one could have beaten joe in that fight, l really don't see why some people see ali winning here, he fought wery well for a rusty man but he pretty much got knocked out twice in the 11

without question Ali would beat both Tyson and Frazier prime/in a trilogy 70's Ali wins also.. Tyson wouldn't take the punishment joe Frazier took..
The greatest sporting event in history!
Mohammed Ali was just a god given gift to the world in those trouble years... Rip the greatest of all times
One of the best heavy weight boxing championship all of the time.
❤
This never gets old. ,,,But,, this is PEAK Frazier. The greatest victory of anybodys career. He left it all. Ali a warrior,,,but not the man that fought Liston,Patterson, or Williams...toe the greatest battle of all time. Joe won @ absolutely surprised Ali. He took Ali to a place he thought he would never be.
Frazier won this fight very well!
The 13 round was really wonderful 😨😨😨😨😨😨😨
Agreed. Almost mythical in its pre-fight hype, but it lived up to its billing
That was the real fight Rocky VS Apolo.
Ali Channel,
Thanks for this magnificent fight.
@@claykendall7681 Frazier was the better fighter that night. I make it 9-6 for Frazier.
I had 8-6-1 for Frazier and alot closer then alot people would think.
You are correct as Ali gave Joe a back alley whupping that night. Ali 9 rounds to Frazier 6
@@stanleyadams2046 nope, joe won, even ali admited years later that no one could have beaten joe in that fight, l really don't see why some people see ali winning here, he fought wery well for a rusty man but he pretty much got knocked out twice in the 11
Muhammad Ali started talking slower after Joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali.
true///Ali fight doctor said he noticed lasting brain damage after the first Frazier bout 💯
The hatred between these two was not faked, unlike all of today's fights. These two would have happily killed the other man in the ring.
58:45 thats why we all here arent we...that legendary dodge
I love boxing.
I hate the attitudes of so many so-called boxing fans, as seen in the comments of this video, and in many other matches with many other boxers. Such sad disrespect for great fighters just because they're "the other guy". Damn shame.
In the replays, they show mostly Frazier`s aktion.
Anyone can say what they want, but 1:12:30 is the greatest moment in any boxing match for me.
Truth
Burt Lancaster is a pretty good color commentator.
And Archie Moore kind of sounds like Emanuel Steward at times.
Throw Lamps in there, you'd have a legit HBO booth.
I was thinking the same about Archie sounding like Emanuel.
49:21 Impresionante, Frazier lo golpeaba como si Ali le debiera dinero.
I think of , Ali as I JSK
a non approachable start with a disaster oud
History is a subject that[ often solidifies the FUTURE
Ali won the prefight trash talk show down. Fraizer dominated only during the actual fight. Therefore the media remembers that Ali won.
You cant recognise frazier after the fight. Ali won first 5 easy 9 10 and 14 but was a close fight
Frazier won 3 & 4
MY FAVORITE FIGHT MUHAMMAD ALI WASN'T JUST BATTLING JOE FRAZIER HE WAS GOING AGAINST THE POWERFUL FORCES IN THIS COUNTRY TO SEE HIM LOSE.IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I MEAN IM TALKING ABOUT THE US GOVERNMENT BECAUSE HIS STANCE AGAINST THE WAR IN VIETNAM.
Great fight - the best!
Burt Lancaster ruined a lot of it ...
That Romania Doll could have been an Voo Doo Doll first time i ever known about that Doll before that first Ali Frazier Legendary First Fight March 8 1971.
dövüşmemiş adeta yerlere eğilmiş frazier.belden aşağı eğilmesine hakem engel olsaymış m.ali onu kum torbasına çevirirmiş.
45:58 so COOL
I’m here to see Nicky Barnes and frank Lucas 😂😂😂 in the front row
Me too did you find them?
@@stevenwillis2002 lol no
Tak to jest właśnie ta walka stulecia, prawdziwa walka stulecia.
Muhammad Ali wasn’t prepared for this fight with Joe Frazier. Ali didn’t know how good Joe was actually, and that’s why he lost.
No fighter - not even the greatest - can be out of the ring for 3 years and come back the same fighter that he was. Pre boxing ban ali would've demolished frazier....even in this fight he still threw more punches than frazier.
@@LeighRichards27 yeah. That’s why Ali is my fav in my opinion
7/2021 ALI and that beautiful physique; that stance he's famous for.. faking round 9 his great 'come back!' the sphinx! maya angelou's 'I RISE' great fight and w/out bulldozer Joe wouldn't have been such a riveting fight! frazier's a POWERHOUSE but could've used a stretcher at the end. Ali knocked flat and bunced back up; think fight should've gone to ALI ! controversial fight because he wouldn't go to war?. and they're both 'gone' now. HI FRANK [sinatra] !
!!!😊❤
Warriors
I respect both, always have...but I was upset at Ali at the time for thinking that HE won the fight? I do believe in his later life though, he gave Joe the credit he deserved. Both were tough fighters and wonderful souls.
It was a very very close fight even if joe won it.With ali from a long lay off of 3.5 years .i was quite unfair for a fight of 15 rounds .Taking nothing out of Frazier who gave a performance you see once in every decate
Joe Fraizer was a great fighter also a good, decent man & Clay was a great fighter but not a good or decent man. Frazier fought for Clay outside the ring, he fought him inside the ring. He was the better man on both sides & deserves due credit on all sides. Great man, Great fighter…… 19:23 🥊🥊
