  • Reduce slop and increase shifter accuracy with Dieselgeek's new procedure to "shim the ball" of your shifter mechanism. This procedure applies to all 2008 and later MK5, MK6 and MK7 chassis VAG shifters. The white plastic ball socket has a VW part number of 1K0 711 699A but you can shim it for free since it is already worn perfectly to the shape of the aluminum ball mounted to the shifter stick. If you have an earlier MK5 (2004-2007) you can shim the ball as shown here: • Improve your MK4 and e...
    Sorry for the blurriness of the video in the first few seconds. We would have reshot it but the take was pretty perfect after the blurriness. Also, the width of the shim should be 3/4" or 19mm for best results. -Jim

    Hi All,
    When you do this on a car like me, don't forget to remove the shift cable on the gearbox (this one mounted on part number 1K0711203B). This will significantly reduce the time of replacement, because the gear shift will be able to be lifted much higher and you will easily fit a new part.

    Doing this in the car was a pain like no other, I'm guessing its so easy in the vid, because you have lots of leverage.

    Hi a quick question since you have this opened... I'm having trouble with my passat 2008 2.0tdi manual transmissions with the reverse light. It just doesn't come on somebody told me there should be some switch in the centre console which basically you have there with you now... my question to you is if you've seen anything there that might be related to the reverse light. Please respond me and thanks in advance :)

    Would this modification be doable on a 2015 MK7 Golf TDI 6-Speed? I’m in the process of installing my Sigma 6 and would like to do this, but I didn’t hear you mention it being applicable to the MK7 or MK8.

    Hi Jim, I tried to replace the plastic ball socket the way you’re doing it here but it’s not letting me slide it back in no matter how hard I try, I have a MK5 2008 GTI. Any advice?

    I am having trouble getting the socket out. No matter how hard I push the catches in, only 2 of them seem to actually be letting go. Anyone else have the same problem? Tips?

    • @rjmari
      @rjmari Před 3 lety

      @@dieselgeekdotcom yup, pulling up quite hard. Tried pulling from different points too. Even tried leaving screwdrivers in there to wedge, but that doesn't even disengage them.

      I finally got it out after lots of cursing and cuts on my hands and banging my knee. Not sure why my socket was particularly stubborn.
      The shim reduced the play by maybe 30%, but there's still a lot. I might consider the other solutions you have for getting the rest of the way. Thanks!

    Hi Jim
    I’m in the process of installing the first gear better on my MK6 GTI, and I’m having issues with the socket removal. I’ve been able to free out the 4 tabs and lift the socket, but it’s only coming up 1/2in. Is there something under the ball or assembly that need to be loosen in order to free the whole thing? Or I need to pry harder? Just don’t want to break the plastic part.
    Ps: I have the diesel geek short shifter installed on. Could that have an impact?
    Thanks a lot

    I had a crunch going from 2nd to 3rd. I replaced the gearbox with a second hand unit but still have the same problem with the new box. I can't believe that the new gearbox has the same problem as the old one. Linkages are adjusted correctly. Is there something else I am missing or could try?

      Mine also wobbles side my side.. almost enough play to seem like it’s in neutral when it’s actually in gear. Did this shimmy trick, new metal shifter bushings, ordered the shaft bushings but I’m thinking it’s the spring. Looked at it today and the shifter has play when it’s not hitting the side to side spring. Not sure how to fix that though
