Panera isn't a bagel place as Rhett stated. You don't go there thinking oh they have bagels, you go there thinking that you want bread or soup in a bread bowl or a sandwich with a soup in a bread bowl.

As a baker at Einsteins the cheesy hasbrown bagel for the first round was appalling! That store can do better!

Schmear and smear are basically the same word. Smear is the English word, Schmear is the yiddish word that has recently been borrowed into English. Schmear has more to do with food and is more readily used as a noun but I think both can be used as nouns and verbs.

Cream cheese is a type of schmear. All cream cheese spreads are schmears but not all schmears are cream cheese based. Although typically schmears are cream cheese based.

I was an Einstein Bros. store manager for 4 years way back in the early 2010's while I was getting my Masters degree. Link is 100% right about the "schmear marketing". Einstein's cream cheese is a whipped cream cheese so it "schmears". The word comes from the German word "smear" which essentially means to spread butter... a lighter, more spreadable topping than actual cream cheese. It's easier to spread because it's whipped and almost butter-like.
Okay but regular unwhipped cream cheese is also schmear.
Both these places are near my work. I opt for the independent little bagel shop with the homemade breakfasts.

As a Panera Bread baker, I'm sad we took this loss!
On the last cinnamon sugar bagel, the cinnamon sugar being on the inside is actually a mistake by the baker who made it that day. You're supposed to perfectly pinch the dough and put the cinnamon crunch topping on top, but I'm assuming their dough partially came apart before baking.
Unfortunate loss for Panera, but as many others stated, Panera is more of a sandwich and soup bread place than a bagel place.
Einsteins does slap though.
Can I ask how much of the food is still made in-house, rather than shipped/reheated? I've loved Panera since I was a teenager and I still like certain items, but it seems the quality has gone down :/ Love the cinnamon crunch and asiago bagels tho.
Just looked up Einstein Bros and found that theirs two in my city. Crazy, I never heard of them before. One in a college a the other is across the street from another college. Pretty strategic.
They are definitely targeting college set- the only ones we have around d here are in student centers
All 3 in the state of Alabama where I live are on or very near college campuses. They seem to be targeting the college student market pretty specifically where Panera likes to target a wider market of working professionals and soccer moms.

This definitely wasnt filmed at 2am. They 100% film multiple episodes a day, and more along a regular work day schedule. There's a ton of people that work there, they can't have all of them working nights.

I agree - I'm pretty sure Panera doesn't have bagels at all their locations, because I never knew they even had bagels. Around me, I only see people going there for lunch. Everyone goes to Einstein Bros in the morning for bagels. I would compare Einstein to Great American Bagel (those are the 2 biggest ones near me, anyway), and I would compare Panera to something like Potbelly I guess; though I don't think Panera would win regardless of which category you put it in. I think Panera used to be better when it was a smaller, private company (though I'm just assuming it was a mom & pop shop at some point).
I don't like Paneras lunches i only like there bagels and pastries. I tend to think of them more for breakfast. They are also closer to me so there is that.
And yet there is much internet debate between the two. Maybe this will help put it to rest.
Compared to the classic NY bagel made by small bagel shops, chain restaurants like Panera and Einstein merely produce bread donuts - a proper bagel requires a crisp outer crust thanks to taking a plunge in a lye water bath prior to baking.

Good call, it hasn't changed much. There's a few things that are ok, but it's over priced and the service at most locations is horribly slow.
Well like, Panera is not a "bagel shop" by any stretch of the imagination. They have bagels, but it's not what they are known for. They are pretty much a "soup and sandwich" place. MOST of their soups are amazing. Their mac and cheese is also quite good. Most of their sandwiches are good. If you're going there for a good bagel.. you may not find it.

Fun fact: when i worked at Panera a lot of customers would order it as a "muffle" instead of a muffie 😂. I would giggle every time! The pumpkin muffie is by far the best! That and the cherry and cheese pastry were so good! The asiago bagel sliced and toasted with the sun dried tomato pesto (which i dont think they have anymore) was phenomenal!

This is the first time I've never heard of one of the restaurants. I'm from the east coast (Maine), now living in the midwest (Illinois), and have never heard of Einstein Bros.
Both of them constantly saying "muffin" and "cookie," but not once putting together that it's a portmanteau of muffin and cookie was driving me insane.
