2023 was an interesting year for comic book movies and TV shows to say the least. There were some really bad ones. But there were a lot of good ones as well. Some of the bad seems to drown out a lot of the good that there were. But because of the fact that it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, instead of a best of this year, we decided to do a recap of everything that was. So in this episode, Kristian, Winston and Coy will go over the list of all of the comic book TV and movie properties and give their thoughts of what was the best and what was disappointing. #DC #DCU #Marvel #MCU #Comics #Movies

GOTG 3 was the pinnacle for me when it came to films, and Loki S2 is #1 for series. SMATSV is close behind Guardians, and Gen V is close 2nd to Loki.
"There is no god! That's why I stepped in!" High Evolutionary was amazing and one of the best villains in years
I'm glad you guys mentioned Blue Beetle. It almost made my top 10 list of the year. That's a movie that should've done way better than it did. Speaking of my top 10 list, I don't know if you saw it on your top 10 list video, Kristian, but I swapped out The Holdovers for Poor Things at number 10. It was a tough list to out together as it was. Anyway, back to this topic, I have to push back a bit on The Marvels as far as the ending. You're right that Carol could've easily transported her stuff to Monica's house on her own and she likely did and we just didn't see it, but Kamala and her family were probably insistent about helping Carol move in as a show of gratitude and she probably didn't want to hurt their feelings. Also, I'm sure Kamala's house is being repaired somehow. I assume they at least have insurance. I don't know, I think you're being very nitpicky about this. Given all the problems that movie has, this one isn't really high up on the list.
I will say Superman and Lois is show that maybe you guys are sleeping on probably because it’s on CW. But each season has been consistently great
I know and im confused as Kristian is such a huge Superman fan and Henry Cavill fan. Tyler Posses all his qualities plus more.

I love just how much the One Piece fandom has embraced Kristian and how joyous they are for him. I've never been a OP fan, but maybe I should give it a go. The fan base, alone, makes me want to.

The Flash is a guilty pleasure comic book film for me this year. 😬

I overall think superheroe content is not as bad as people say it is. Its cleary not what it was but its not horrible like some people say.
Great recap my guys, just finally finished the full episode. Love the show, and as someone who enjoys this genre, I won't deny I'm ignorant to the details of everything, so always looking forward to C&C.

Movies were meh this year. 2023 was the year for video games. One of the greatest years of all time in the gaming sphere
I loved The Killer! It’s the only 2023 movie I’ve seen 3 times. The fight scene in it was the best fight scene of the year!

it was good. killer was super competent, but i never really cared for his motivation, etc... just came off way too nihilistic of a character to get behind - which is the point of the character, but still not a great choice for a movie

@@apocalypsepow I simply found the story lacking, protagonist muddied, couldn’t help but feel like I consumed a meal with empty calories. I wanted more and imma huge fan of the director.

I’m just 10 minutes in, but I’m going to have to agree with Coy about Across the Spiderverse. They also capture Gwen’s world so well. We didn’t get to live in it long but it felt like we truly watched the first couple issues of her comic come to life on screen.
I love Reloaded, the freeway chase is among the greatest action sequences ever but the CGI doesn't hold up at all in the court yard brawl but even that was amaze-ballz

I’m just here to say I agree with Coys take on Bradley Cooper being better as Rocket than Leonard Bernstein. He was good in Maestro but I don’t think he was phenomenal.

I totally understand why Kristian would pass on a 'Worst Of' but it is enjoyable to simply discuss the movies we didn't enjoy. But mixing it in with the movies you loved is smart.
This season of what if? Is proving way stronger then I every thought it would be.

52:22 I had the same problem with how Cassie described Scott being stuck in the Quantum Realm......she was like "when you were gone for 5 years" the expression, hand gestures and the way Newton delivered that line was awful
Watching Cassie for the first 10 mins of that movie made me consider not having kids.....and I'm the one who adored young Cassie and even had teary eyes when Scott met her in endgame after getting out of the quantum realm.....and she just treated it like it was nothing, that should have been horrifying for her, her father just vanished from the face of the Earth along with 3.5 billion humans

Regarding Quantumania, I remember Peyton Reed, who directed all three Ant-Man films, say in an interview that the reason they made a third film in the Quantum Realm with Kang is because he felt the two first films were palette cleansers and wanted an Avengers-scale Ant-Man film. In retrospect, it was a bad idea and I wonder if it was really his intention or the studio’s.
There is no shame in the first two Ant-Man being palette cleansers. They’re charming and fun filled with Paul Rudd’s charm and Ant-Man’s unique size-changing nature. I can name a lot of superhero movies that are palette cleansers like Spider-Man, Shazam and Aquaman and it doesn’t make them lesser films.
To answer your question, it was probably a mixture of both over ambition and studio interference.

I get it's all subjective but man I couldn't help but roll my eyes when coy said that Bradley Cooper was better in Guardians 3 than he was in Maestro. Beyond his likely Oscar nominated performance, this man also co-wrote, directed and produced the film.

Across the Spiderverse, Loki season, Guardians 3, Invincible part one of season 2, Gen V (surprise I like it as much), and What If season 2 (Coy and Greg Alba reaction to those episodes priceless 🤣)are my comic book highlights. Agree no more empty calories in our movies/series. Zachary Levi turned me off to see the sequel
The final episode of Secret Invasion was jaw-droppingly AWFUL. A true waste of a great cast.

Blue beetle was a box office casualtie that suffered from the reboot of dc and the majority of low quality superhero films lately.
I thought for sure you would title this episode
A year in memoriam: 2023 comic movies.
Always great to have the longer episodes, enjoy them on my drive home helps keep the boredom away, great to laugh along with the crew.
Spiderverse was my favorite film, Gen V was my favorite show in the genre

I think the saturation has been turned up too much for these streams, the colours class with the natural colour tone that was present before
idk if it's the new computer, camera, lens or what but it looks great!!!
The color is FAR too saturated and highs are blown out.

Hah, Winston brought up the compliment sandwich and just before he mentioned it, I was thinking if you or you guys do a top 10 great and crappy movies/shows of the year, you could do the same thing; bottom 5 of your the year's greatest, the top 10 of your worst, then to finish off with the top half of the top 5 would be a good format?
Not a strong year for comicbook movies and TV. Aside from Spider Verse, Guardians 3, Loki S2, and Superman and Lois S3. This year was mid and shows that a reset is much needed.
I think the problem causing a "bad" year for cbm is the over saturation of the market with cbm and TV shows causing the products to be diluted and less impact full. GOTG3 and ATSV are amongst the best cbm ever made, but sadly, that gets easily forgotten for the "next" show or movie that comes out.

Best animated TV show of 2023 is scavengers reign on Max. Underrated, unique, and probably the best sci-fi in years!
I personally didn't like One Piece anime (haven't read the manga) but I loved the live action show
The anime is for all ages even the live action show

I used to go opening night for every superhero movie leading up to infinity war- i only saw gotg3 and blue beetle in theaters this year
GOTG and Across the Spiderverse were absolute gems. I would love the Fincher movie but ALIEN cubed, I still cannot forgive!!!!🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️

Gen V, The Boys, and Invincible HAVE to be catching Marvel and DC eyes. Those shows have been executed so well, and not containing the writing to being family friendly is so refreshing.
Also glad to see Mutant Mayhem get mentioned. I grew up in the 90s so ofc I loved it, but what tells me its more than nostalgia bait is my 10 year old loved it too. Both of us agreed spiderverse was great, but we had more fun with the turtles.
And animation is not just for kids

For me, TMNT Mutant Mayhem and Gen V have my top spots for best comic book movie and tv series. Secret Invasion was the biggest plunder of the year in my opinion.
I also really like Drea de Matteo. Makes me think why I haven't really seen her in anything besides Sons of Anarchy, which was at least a decade ago now. Also, I miss the Tony painting, KH!

I thought Secret Invasion was better than most people thought. Dialogue and acting are my main positives. It poses a strange, yet ballsy question in the end. Most people hated it, but if it works I feel it can be good.
Loki S. 2 was the best, though! The Killer was frinking nice too.
I'm glad you like Secret Invasion because I wished I did, It was the only Disney+ show that I hated.
@juanluismendoza8655 That's too bad. To me, the only ones I really disliked were Obi-Wan and MoonKnight. Vader and Obi-Wan stuff was the best, but lost its meaning due to the other distractions, and I just didn't vibe with Moon Knights' story or characters in general. But there's so much other good stuff, so it's okay in the end.
Finally got the Gen V talk I've been looking for although a episode by episode Deep dive would have highly appreciated. On another note can we please get an Invincible deep dive in the new year?

Pretty mediocre year for comic book movies but last year was worse. I didn't really hate any of the movies this year. Nothing this year was worse than Thor L&T

Capes & Cowls: The Lost Episodes!
Gen V was so good. It took a few weeks for me to get to it because I didn’t expect too much from it. I ended up staying up until 2 am one night bingeing/getting caught up on it.
Across the Spiderverse is my favorite comic book movie of the year and my favorite movie of the year. I normally don’t like movies that are part 1’s because they don’t feel like their own movie (I.e. Dune) but this one felt like it’s own story.
I’m still in therapy after GOTG 3, I loved it but damn Gunn relax! Lol

Best TV Show for me was "Moving" on Disney+/Hulu, In fact it was the best superhero thing I saw overall this year.

I feel like, when looking at the entirety of year's films and not just comics or animes and adaptations, this was a pretty fantastic year. But, I feel like when it came to comics and anime, it was very high and low, sort of a gulf between the good ones (like GotG3 or Spiderverse or One Piece) and everything else.
It’s been a fire year for anime. Bleach, Vinland Saga, Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan finale, Jujutsu Kaisen. Many others as well that I’m sure I forgot

The Killer is GREAT.
GOTG3, spider verse, Loki and gen v were all products of love and passion for these characters and having a story to tell. Ant man3 , flash, marvels, aquaman 2 and secret invasion are examples of the studios losing touch of the audience.
Do you think people would remember Transformers Rise of the Beasts more if it was only the second Transformers movie ever made after Bumblebee?
