Highlights from the London 1948 Olympic Games as Fanny Blankers-Koen wins one of multiple gold medals, leading to her being rightfully named the female athlete of the 20th century.
Francina Blankers-Koen made her Olympic debut for the Netherlands as a high jumper in 1936. Although World War II deprived her of competition when she was at her peak, she still became the star of the 1948 London Games. Aged 30 and a mother of two, Fanny Blankers-Koen she was dubbed "The Flying Housewife".
Blankers-Koen was untouchable in London. She won the 100m, 200m, 80m hurdles and relay and could have won more medals, but for a rule limiting women to three individual events in track & field. At the time, she held world records in the high jump and long jump.
In 1999, Fanny Blankers-Koen was voted Female Athlete of the Century by the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations).

This woman is too underrated. Why don't people talk about her more often?

She is not underrated but lets face it she competed at a time when opportunities for women were not global.

Flying Housewife the greatest of all time. Although it looked like the leg 3 Dutch girl stepped out of lane , the most impressive was the 200m in the cold rain on cinder track from lane 1!

Of the nine women's track and field events in 1948, Fanny Blankers-Koen won FOUR. Her neighbors bought her a bicycle so she "wouldn't have to run so much."

at the time women could take part in just FOUR events, while at the same time she held the world records in both high-jump and long-jump as well, but wasn't allowed to compete, you can imagine ...

Nobody gainsays the triumph of Blankers-Koen, but I guess that Jackie Joyner-Kersee deserves also to be track & field queen of 20th century!
