    I remember way back in 1975 and 76 seeing a lot of 71 to 73 Roadrunners all over the roads burning rubber everywhere they went. I'm thinking this was probably because the retail price / blue book value on those were less than the Charger and Cuda because they were the more stripped down, version of those cars. So for gear heads who wanted Mopar muscle but didn't want to spend the extra money you could usually find one with a 383 cheaper than a Charger or a Cuda.

    I heard from someone that the 71 to 74 Charger bodies are extremely aerodynamic and that body style won the most races in the history of Nascar. I also heard that Petty wanted to use the same body style into the later 70s. Can't verify that, but it came from some pretty knowledgeble people

      Also when I went to visit the Petty Museum back in the early 90s they told me the 3rd gen Charger was Richard's overall favorite race car to drive... they hung on the body style till the 1977 season. Nascar would only let you run a body style back then 3 years after the last manufactured year.

    • @georgejacob3162
      @georgejacob3162 Před 5 lety +3

      Not at all. I got exhausts, Magnum wheels, Cooper Tires, headlining and other parts no problem. I was a UK Mopar Muscle Association Club member so I got many parts through the club. I also used Year One based in Florida sometimes. Trouble is that I was fixing about 30 years of neglect by other owners and it was costing me too much! The prior owner to me had the car repainted to hide all sorts of rust and other woes. The guy I sold it to had it repainted to continue hiding the same rust and woes! It was a California car and it didn't like the rainy British weather! It originally had a 318cu in engine but when I got it it had a 1973 360cu in engine fitted. One owner prior to me (I was the FOURTEENTH British owner!) obviously had dreams of drag racing it as it also had a fuel shut off and adjustable air suspension fitted. Last I heard was that the car went back to the States.

    • @georgejacob3162
      @georgejacob3162 Před 5 lety +1

      Sunny Ray. Mine went back to the States and hopefully got the love it deserved. At least I hope it didn't fall into the hands of Chip Foose! If I had the money I would have taken it back to bare metal and had all the rust repaired properly and had it repainted in its original Bright White rather than Ford Diamond White which is what the previous owner had it painted in due to the fact that he worked for a Ford dealership! It left the LA factory in May 1971 in Bright White but someone had repainted it at some point in Top Banana. Then Ford Diamond White was slapped on on top of the yellow paint by the owner prior to me purchasing the car. So, if you see a 1971 Charger with a half black vinyl roof in the wrong off-white color and with the wrong engine (a 1973 360 cu in motor) and a green vinyl bench seat interior with column auto transmission then that will be my old car! I expect the car probably has a big block motor in it by now and hopefully someone has sorted out the bodywork and the color! Oh and the front bumper which was painted black to hide the badly pitted chrome! That car needed a LOT of love as previous owners had ruined it by trying to turn it into a drag car (fuel shut off, adjustable suspension, 14" front Cragar wheels, 15" rear slot mag wheels with different width tires and I think different tire manufacturers etc) and neglecting other areas. I sorted the wheels and tires out with Magnums shod with Cooper Tires all round.

    I love to see posts about these Gen3 Chargers. I was unaware of the hood difference between 73 & 74, so thanks for that. However, the rear side window openings, without SE fillers, are different between 71-72 (sweeps back as shown in this video) and 73-74 (sweeps forward, more like a 72 SE). And unfortunately, 71-72 and 73-74 front bumper brackets will not interchange as mentioned in this video. The bolts will not line up.

    • @RegulerShowTV
      @RegulerShowTV Před 7 měsíci

      To tuck the front bumper on 73/74’s, all you gotta do is oval out/slot the bumper bracket bolt holes to bring it closer, the small upper brackets will have to be modified a bit but not too badly. To tuck the rear bumper you can get 71/72 brackets, or section a 1.5” piece from each side bracket. If you google “how to fix ugly disco era bumpers” there’s a motortrend article that shows exactly how to do this with a 73 charger rear bumper.

    Nice video, Tony.... You covered a lot of the Basic Exterior changes between the 4 year models and what one could expect to see from a "Factory Stock" charger.... But,, you know that back in those days, a person could Dealer request or Special order them any number of ways from the Factory... Case in point....
    My first car was a '74 charger that I bought in '79 from the original owner....It was an SE Model , Red with a White Landau Vinyl top, 6 slot filled Quarter Windows....With white interior...
    But, the owner had went into the dealership and put in a special order to have some items changed/added...These were,, a 360 with a 4 barrel, keeping the Factory A/C, backed by an Automatic transmission, AM/FM radio, with a power antenna (this was Dealer installed, not Factory), a Rear Window Defrost and also,Cruise control...as well as other options that he chose from the Rallye package...He opted for the High back Bucket seats with a Center console, Rallye wheels with chrome centers and Beauty rings,, Raised White Letter F-70's all around, and Lastly, a Power Bulge Hood with Hood pins....all this back in 1974 put the purchase price Right at 5,000 dollars....
    He gave me all the paperwork when I bought it, and I can tell you one thing,,, I sure wish I still had her today....
    Keep up the good Videos and info, my friend...

    Given only 4:32 to extol the differences in 3rd gen Chargers is a tough job. In so far as giving a good overview, you done good! The most important aspect that must be corrected is that the quarterpanels are not the same shape between the 71/72 & 73/74 variants. The leading edge, & therefore the door shape at the window sill is 2" lower on the 73/74 version. As you mentioned, the later are like the 71/72 Plymouth. Even the upper door panels interchange on 71/72 Plymouth & 73/74 Charger. But the 71/72 Charger & the 73/74 Plymouth don't interchange. Also, as you pointed out the front fenders between the 71/72 & 73/74 are different. They do not simply swap in that bolt alignment is different. That can be overcome, but the difference in wheel lip height can lead to interesting head scratching. Keep up the good work Tony!

    at around 3800 ponds for the RB models, these cars arent near as heavy as they look, and never was an issue on the round track anyway....no 70-71 429 torino, or 454 chevelle weighs in at 3800.

      3800 pounds would be a featherweight in the pony car class today! Something this size would be lucky to come in near 4000.

    My Dad bought a new Challenger in 1970, I could not believe my eyes, until I found out it was a 6 cyl, real skinny tires, but it did have a 4 speed. I asked him why didnt you get a V8, Gas Son Gas it aint cheap anymore. But it was a cool looking car (Red). I think gas was around 50 cents a gal, but 50 cents was not cheap back then.

      What if they bought the car and never registered it, or waited a few years? I found a 1990 (I think) C1500 454 SS a few years ago on craigslist that was a 0 owner never registered truck. They bought it and put it in a garage with 20 miles on it.

    Just a suggestion- when you're doing this kind of Identification work, why not use pictures to demonstrate the features? If you're talking about a feature I'm familiar with, I can usually imagine it in my mind and imagine it on your demonstration vehicle. But if it's not a feature I'm familiar with, then I can't. There are a lot of Mopar pictures showing the features you're referring to available for free on the internet. I've heard they're not difficult to insert into the video and then people can see them in the flesh rather than trying to imagine something based on your description (as good as it is). The door gills you talked about, which weren't present on your demo vehicle, come to mind. Just a thought. Great channel. Always look forward to your new vids.

    Didn't the center bumper medallion also disappear on the front bumper after 1972 and the 1973 -1974 Charger SE had a distinctly different grille then the non SE.
    And let's not even start on the taillight selection like the dressed up 1972 Specific SE taillights and so on lol.

    • @mikesbbody
      @mikesbbody Před 4 lety

      Yes, you are correct about the medallions disappearing in 73/74 front bumpers the 71-72 hideaway's were different, pretty sure the grills on 73/74's were the same regardless of it being a SE or not 72 SE's did have the trim on the taillights if you removed it it looks just like standard 72 Charger taillights. 71 RT and 500 models had different taillights than all other 71-72 models with the exception of the 72 Rallye model which shared the same only you could not get them in black in 72. on the 71 RT's they came in black or argent silver (just argent silver on the 500's) depending on you're bumper color combo that's another thing the colored bumper package was only available in 71 in 6 different colors you could not order hideaway lights with the colored bumper combo
