- Today on Dead Dodge Garage, we revive this excellent 1973 Dodge Charger. It’s loaded with just about every option that was available, and is in remarkably good shape. It doesn’t have any of the “normal” Mopar rust either, so that’s neat. But will it fire up and drive off of the trailer into the shop, where it will soon receive a full restoration? The answer won’t surprise you, it’s yes.

These years Chargers have grown on me. I didn't love them back in the day compared to the 68's or even the 66/67's, but I kinda like seeing them now.
I definitely agree. I’ve had four of them in project form. I always thought they were cool, but nothing compared to the holy grail ‘68-70. I think they’re quite cool now. Especially as a platform to build into whatever one might want.
A full restoration is what this cae deserves.

Always liked this body style s especially the hidden head lights and the gills on the doors. The. I got one from a old friend from work back in the 80s. I rode in it one time and fell in love. Had many 67-70. Well passed away. And his sister 😍 told me it’s mine ! 💁♂️😎😱

Amazing Rare Dodge Charger SE! At 19 years old my first car was a 73 Dodge Charger SE@ it had the triple three windows in the rear’ 150 mph on the dash’ I only paid $190 because at a nursing home I worked at a Nurse sold it to me because it would only get up to 44 mph” a friend I knew since 1st grade Grandfather and Brother checked it out at her grandfather’s car garage fixed it laughing at me as I was confused “ Nick! Her Grandfather told me! All she needed was a set of spark plugs!!!! You got a steal!!! Lol! I was amazed happy in shock! My Mother named her The Brownie because it was colored Bronze’ drove it for about 12 years and brought another one a white colored 74 Dodge Charger SE Brougham
It had bucket seats with a automatic shifter!

My high school car in 1979 was a mint 1974 dodge charger. Black interior and black exterior, factory air 440cid. I got my license and the car on the week of my 16th birthday. I put 80 miles on that car the first day.I bought the car with money I had saved since age 10. From moving lawns and loading and unloading freight when I hit my growth spurt to 6'-1''. During that period my friends uncle had two hemi Cud'a's. I could not grab the $100 bill off the dashboard of the Cud'a I got to ride in.
What a score. She is a very high option survivor. She will clean up very nicely.

My brother got a 72 Roadrunner in 84. It had a 400 with automatic slap shift. That 400!was a decent engine. But he blew the motor in it showing off in front of some cute girls. I had a 69 Charger with a bad transmission. So we pulled the 383 out of the Charger and put the 383 in. We ran all the 400 stuff like thermoquad carb and intake. Electronic ignition. Also had headers when he bought it. That 383 was a beast with the newer stuff off the 400. That roadrunner really came alive. So seeing that 400 brought back fond memories of the Roadrunner. Thanks for the video and the walk down memory lane.

I had a 1973 Charger Rallye with a 340 and 4spd Pistol Grip and Console. The car was root beer brown with white vinyl top, and white seats, and black carpet and dash. It also had the Tough steering wheel. I sold it in 1980. I paid $1,100 for it, and was in good shape. Worth a lot more than that now, Lol
Yes they’re definitely coming up in value. I think they’re great looking cars. I think the ‘68 is better looking, but then I’m a little biased… 😅

I have a 72 Charger Ralleye with a 340 and i love it.
My first new car was special ordered at age 22. It was a 73 Charger SE Brougham. Black, a rare houndstooth interior with center arm rest. 318, AT, full power, PW, and wire wheel covers. It was a really gorgeous car and a chick magnet.
It got lost on the way to Chicago and ended up in St. Louis. I finally received it in July of 73 3 months after ordering it.
That should have been a real omen. As gorgeous as it was, it had to go into the dealer quite a few times for problems.
Being very stupid, I traded it in in 1975 for a silver Cordoba! That car was put together even worse.

My dad was a MOPAR man. My first car was to be his 57 Savoy s-door. V8 and AT. By the time I could drive in late 1966, it was a complete rust bucket with 2x4s holding up the front seat.
We've had a few MOPARS since we got married in 77 and I still want a 68 Charger or Roadrunner. Maybe if I win the lottery!

My first car was a 73 just like that one with the 400! 16 and with at the time my dream car. Also had a Sun Roof and was Chestnut metallic. Loved that car. Eventually had it turning 12:09 in the 1/4 mile and still street legal. Wish I still had it but hindsight is always 20/20.
My first was also a 73 SE with the 400 and a sunroof too. Power windows,rear window defroster and other special options. Triple black with Cragar wheels.

Cool to see something like this come back to life! The 73 Charger is my dream car, I know other models are more desirable but having grown up a huge Petty fan that 73-77 blue and red Charger holds a special place to me.

After I lost my two '70 Bees several decades ago (one was from a crooked body shop that stole it), I just had to get another, but could only afford a '73+ at the time. But it is a real Road Runner, a factory 400 (came with a 440 in it that's on it's last leg and .060 over) and a factory 4 speed with lots of bondo, but at least it's mine. Still always lusting after a proper Mopar ('68-72), but it is what it is, and even if I ever got the year I want, I would never sell this one because I'm attached to it. I've learned my lesson. And a new one: The '73+ years are okay too.

These are one of my bucket list cars. My friends brother had a 73 charger rallye with the 400, buldge hood, side stripes, machine gun tips, and mag 500 wheels, back when I was in middle school in 1997. Ever since I Laid eyes on it and heard it, damn!

Nice car. I have a 1972 Charger SE that I restored. The 400 motor was blown and I replaced it with a 440. It has 84k original miles. Probably have more money in the car than it is worth but who cares I love it. Great video. Thanks.

I'm in Colorado and just dragged my parents '73 Charger back from SC. It sat in a pasture for 28 years. Complete rust bucket right now. Has a 318 in it right now. Got a 360 sitting on a stand. My grandfather bought it brand new in April '73. I can't wait to get it back on the road again!

These cars were GREAT! I did MUCH PREFER the AGRESSIVE rear roofline of the '71-'72 Chargers, though! THESE LOOKED LIKE MASSIVE POWER! A few EVEN had it!
For some reason I prefer this later roof line. I think because it’s so effectively copied off of the Duster and late Satellite. Haha. But I do really like the 71-2 as well.
My '73 Brougham SE had the triple Opera windows. Thanks for letting me know what they were called. It was brown/copper color with the white interior, bucket seats, floor shifter and roll up windows. Our 400 came with the Carter Thermo-quad. It never liked to start, but boy those four barrels sounded great at speed. My parents paid $3300 for it new. My dad and I rebuild the engine in the 80's with, I think, a lopier Competition Cams brand camshaft. Thanks for sharing.
That’s awesome. Yes, “all” ‘73 SE cars should have the opera windows. I’m still not sure why some of them (like this one) don’t. The Thermoquad is a legend by itself. Haha. Very cool.

Man I love these things. I have two 1973s. One is a super blue U code Rallye, but the 440 is missing. It currently has a nice running 400 4bbl in it. The other one is base 318 auto car, but it's been swapped to a 360 sometime in the late 70s. Before I got it, it had been sitting in a field since 1983
Nice! I’ve had four 71-74s, and I’ve never had one that was drivable. This blue SE is a work project, but at home I am working on what I call the Toolbox Charger - a base model ‘73. It was recently painted, and will get a 440 swap at some point soon. I sold it to my friend Tracey, who has ordered stacks of new stuff for it. It’s going to be awesome when it’s finished.

The only 8-track or cassette memo/play units I have seen was a 'doba-charger and the player was like an extension of the center console almost touching the dash.
The other was very similar to the Charger one-but a 8-track/memo in a '70 'Cuda. Guy recorded his street racing data with it.

It’s actually a Trail Duster! Which is funny in the context of “Charger stuff” if one thinks about it. Evan has two of them now. They’re neat - but both pretty rough.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Had a '76 Trail Duster bought non-running. Body not as rough as the one at the shop. Sat a while before washing frame. Tons of crummy welds, patches, rust, and cracks under the muck and grease.

I was stationed in Seattle back in 2008-2011. There were just a ton of solid late 60s and early 70s MOPARs. I got stationed there again in 2019 and they were all gone. The sound of those MOPAR starters are like music.
Man nice Charger!! I wish it was my. I helped a friend of my work on a 73 Charger with a 400 and the nice thing about that year model Charger is you can put bigger back tires on it with out rubbing the fender well as long as there not way to big.
Oh yeah. There’s plenty of room for tires. Heck my ‘68 has 295s… unfortunately the driver rear rubs, but that’s another story.
My uncle had a brand new SE back in the day. Red with a black top. Had the 3 small windows. I remember he drove it like he was an old lady going to church. 😂
Wow, I didn’t think a 2bl carb would be on a 400, but I had a friend that had a 440 in a old truck stock that if I remember it had a 2bl on it but it looked like a 1bl. Id love to get out they and check your stuff out, you have all the cars I like, I wanted a old power wagon soooo bad when I was younger from the one we had at snoqualmie pass to work on lift towers.
The cool stuff does kinda congregate around me. Haha. I love the Power Wagon. Such a cool truck. I don’t think any 440s came with two barrels actually? If they did I haven’t seen one. But a lot of low deck engines did. My Charger was an original 383 two barrel.

Yes, it is a 400. I said that in the video, didn’t I? Someone else also commented informing me that it’s a 400 so now I’m curious. I definitely said it’s like a 383, but more. Haha. It’s a sweet car. I have only been able to find pictures of one other SE ‘73 without the opera windows. Someone on the B body group insisted it can’t possibly be an SE… yeah ok but here it is right in front of you guy. Haha.
Those 400s do sound good. If you look up stock specs they have decent cam specs in 73 still. It’s possible the 2brl is different but when I researched it was definitely 268 duration and had close to .450 lift. Also they have a stock windage tray and I believe a double roller timing chain from the factory. My friends 73 chops pretty hard with flowmasters on it.

It’s becoming a pretty car again. The body and paint are already done. We know a good bit of its history as well.

QUICKEST car ever drove? A 1971 Charger 440 Magnum R/T around 1985, Engine had been blueprinted, balanced and Trans had been replaced with an after market street/strip...with a 3:55 rear end ratio..
best could measure, hand held stop watch, beach asphalt parking lot, 1100 foot run..but worked out to about a 13.2 qutr mile, having to launch at 3000 rpm, or would bake the tires(bias ply L-60's_) off
figure today, could improve times, btr tires, suspension, on a strip, an easy 12.5 or better
I recently bought a 73 Charger SE Brougham with a factory 400. Great original shape and even more rust free than yours. I sure do love CA cars. I’m just finishing up rebuilding the front end and switching to poly body mounts. Also switched to 72-earlier 41” T bars. Next move is to swap to pre 73 leaf springs. After all the rubber is gone, it might be a decent handling car.
I’ve heard mixed reviews on whether they really handle worse than the earlier suspension setup or not. We are doing a stock front end rebuild on two of them currently - one with poly bushings, and this one with aluminum. I will be very interested to see how they turn out.
@@DeadDodgeGarage another change I made just last week, was to remove the torsion bar sockets from the 73 cross member, and install them in the 72 location. This opened up a wide range of bars that are cheaper than the select few 73 bars.
Only upgrade I would make would be to change 2bbl to a 4bbl. Very nice Dodge with a ton of rare options. I even notice the cruise control on one of the views.
Yes I forgot to mention cruise control! It’s definitely there though. Haha. My 383 Charger was upgraded from factory 2 barrel to an Edelbrock. It works really well. The owner of the ‘73 actually has some big plans for it drivetrain wise… if it were me I would leave it mostly stock, but I’m looking forward to the build regardless.

That’s awesome. If you had factory exhaust tips I imagine they would’ve been those rifled chrome units, which are one of the coolest pieces ever fitted to an exhaust system if you ask me.

In order for it to start quickly, you have to close the carburetor by hand, do it at the same time as you accelerate a little, after filling the bowl and constant and direct supply of fuel to inside carburetor.
Having the distributor tight and the timing halfway correct would’ve helped quite a bit… I have started many, many classic cars that have been sitting for years and am pretty familiar with the techniques.
That's long time sitting. Guessing had to O/H Carb and wash out gas tank and lines, Sweet old school Mopar
I didn't do a thing to the carb to get it up and running... I was using a gas can instead of the tank. It is getting a new tank, lines, etc. - as well as EFI.

if it is the car i am thinking of, that car was bought new in 73, parked in 79 and sat until 1994, revived by roger johnson, the dual exhaust was put under there by fat max custom exhaust
it has been re upholstered, if it is the same car, it had less than 30 k miles on it in the early 90s, if it sat 30 plus years again miles will be close to accurate,
roger had it re painted by one day paint and body, it will only have one chrome driver side mirror, the rest is correct from what i see,
if this is the right car, it was bought side by side with a black on black on black royal monaco vip 4 door with a police package with a 440, crazy to see that she survived. the odds of another this similar is a million to one
Wow. That sounds eerily similar to this car, but a couple things don’t make sense. The biggest being the family’s story that it has been in the garage this whole time… We found old or spare upholstery for the front seat in a bag in the trunk, but what is installed is already worn out. Not sure how that happens with never having miles put on it since it was done. Judging by the last tag being in the early 90s, I don’t think it has been driven enough to wear out the seats since then. It has absolutely been repainted at least once. In fact we’ve learned it was dented on both quarter panels and has evidence of stud work to pull out the damage. As far as the exhaust, it sure looks like factory type stuff, but I haven’t been under the car to know for sure. Very interesting story. The chances of two identical cars with almost identical stories have to be low… but not zero.
@@DeadDodgeGarage is a very close comparison to roger's car, since you know that it was ordered in washington, it is not the same car, just very close, the one that roger had was bought new at big country dodge in albuquerque, was driven until 79 when we had a big gas crunch, the owners parked it and the monaco they bought the same day, roger got the charger, and broke the pair up.
those cars lived across the street from where we went to junior high school,
the charger roger had was factory strait, not with mashed quarters that had been repaired,
this car fooled me, i thought you had gotten rogers car,
that one of yours, and the one roger had are very similar, is a beautiful car with too many similarities, repaint re upholster, same s,e, package, red stripes in the grille, thinking back, i dont think his had the tape player in the floor, but so close is beautiful, good luck with it.

I could do that. I’m actually wiring the dashboard for the ‘73 “Toolbox” Charger soon. Do you have rallye gauges like these? The nice thing is, on rallye gauges all of the connections are labeled with the color of the wire that should go there.

I learned something new here.. Amazing but is it true and factory? With cruise control on 73 B bodys.. The washer reservoir on the hood latch extension.. Normally mounted where the cruise unit is .. The screws don't look right.. Some one just mount it there?
You’re completely right. Cruise is not on the build sheet, hardware looks wrong, and wires were extended for washer reservoir. We’re thinking dealer installed? Looked like a clean job, and correct fitting parts. Good eye on that.

NO! Lol. Going well. We just got it back from the paint shop yesterday, and it looks awesome. I am building the stroker engine as we speak. I think Evan is starting on the front suspension overhaul this week. Things are coming together!

I’ve done so many videos doing exactly that. All I can say is to watch some and look for pointers. If your cordoba has lean burn though… that could be an issue.

Start it on 2 stroke fuel ⛽️ will help lube a dry top end .
I too have watched all of the Vice Grip Garage… but for some reason, I have had so much starting stuff on mix has. In fact I’ve done two Dodge trucks this year that just refused to run, and I later realized it was because of that fuel. It works fine in my weed whacker… so I don’t know what that’s about.
Have you heard of bent frame rail rolled in on Duster. I took my Duster to the alignment shop and they said it rolled in can't align it.
I’m assuming by rolled in, they mean one of the front frame rails is twisted inward away from the suspension. I have seen a truck frame twist but never on an A body, which is of course a unibody with the rails welded to the body. But I imagine it’s the same idea. I would take it to a frame shop, or a body shop that has a frame table/rack, and see if they can verify it is bent and straighten it.

i have a 74 charger similar to this one but im struggling to find a radiator that lines up with the old mounts
There are two basic sizes - the standard 22”, and the 26” used for AC cars (and possibly found in other applications.) The only differences I see tend to be the height of one or both lower bolt hole locations. This is usually pretty easy to accomodate for with some mild modifications to the radiator side brackets.
My car had a new motor put in it before it was parked don't know if it has a different radiator than stock. The old one i have is 28" wide.@@DeadDodgeGarage
