    Roberto Fontanarrosa once wrote "the reader is an enemy. Everything in their life pulls them away from your book, the pot of rice being cook on the stove, the bus they have to take to go to work, their partner waiting for them on the bedroom. To make the reader forget those things, to nake him or her burn the rice, miss the bus, or find their partners asleep because they couldn't take their eyes out of the page, is to win the battle"

    the risk/reward concept in relation to media was fascinating. It's true, I'm often reluctant to invest hours or days into certain books or videogames. But you're right about there being less risk for shorts. No doubt a contributing factor as to why CZcams and it's generally short content is so popular

    • @master0fthearts894
      @master0fthearts894 Před 3 lety +4

      Yeah, they say ‘If you can’t make your movie good, at least make it short.’
      Means that even a bad movie can be enjoyable if it’s speedy.
      Your expectations for it is lower, so it has a greater payoff.
      Love, Death, and Robots takes that idea, makes good shorts instead, and works to be incredibly inventive and creative.

They stick in my head for years, prompting me to re-watch my favorites just to get a hit of that payoff again. • @thesunthrone
    @thesunthrone Před 3 lety +2

    First off, great video and great breakdown on why this show is popular. Now, while I understand what you're saying and I do agree overall on the psychology for general audiences, to me, these short stories are the opposite. They are very rarely worth my time, because they are the exact opposite of what I'm looking for. It's why I only made it through perhaps half of the first season of LDAR - this episodic, scattered approach felt unfocused, and my investment in those world felt like a waste of time, because I'd not get any more than just a small glimpse in them. So then, why bother at all?
    This is why choosing a book to read is a process in and of itself. Now, maybe those little previews I'm talking about are themselves a short of its own. Maybe it's just the cover, or maybe the summary, or maybe a review somewhere, something that gives me a glimpse into what the books are about, what are the themes dealt with in those stories. I want to see if I'll get something out of it before I put the time investment in, otherwise why bother? There's an absolute multitude of books out there, endless shelves of classics, history and philosophy magnum opii. Do I really have time to try and figure out these one-and-done stories?
    Ultimately, I'm into long form stories, deep dives into characters and significant journeys into fictional worlds that have plenty of thought behind them. That's why I'm not the audience for this show, nor short story anthologies in general.

    This channel is awesome man. Been bing watching your entire channel. I have to admit, I've only recently began writing. Quite a lot harder than I imagined. The begining is easy. But as you build your characters, your world, the plot, the sub plots. It's easy to have them overlap and even become seemingly distant from eachother. If that makes sense. Even trying to keep my own lore straight is a challenge. What do you (or anyone on here) recommend learning how to write books? Should I start out smaller? Maybe a short story or something? How do you guys keep your story straight all the while building and expanding on characters, sub plots, and the world itself? I've written over 120 pages JUST on the plot, world, and characters for reference. Not even the actual book. But it still seems difficult lol. I'm only 400'ish pages into the actual book. Idk, any tips or pointers from anyone would be awesome.

      I think the season could have landed much better just by swapping episodes around. The first ep and last were among the weakest of the bunch, and that does bring the experience down quite a bit, while weaker episodes can be sneaked into the middle to make them less noticeable.
      Personally I'd have opened with all through the house and ended with snow in the desert or pop squad- two strong episodes, the first one short and sweet to hook people, and the last one long-ish but traditional with a good emotional payoff.
      Season one opened fairly traditional with sony's edge (still had a twist though) and ended traditional again with the secret war, but the point is, these were both pretty strong episodes and I don't really know why season 2 opened with a dud, and finished with a rather nice episode, but one that was a bit lacking in payoff.

    honestly i really disliked the show. i watched maybe the first two episodes but couldnt stand it, i found the dialoge to be really unbelievable and the story to be way too obvious. the premise of the first episode was okay maybe, but i honestly dont remember the second episode at all, maybe i didnt even watch it.
    fascanating how our opinions about fiction are so alike but our experience with this series was polar opposite.

    Second season was terrible. The best episode of the second season was just a discount version of Equilibrium

    I didn't like the first season that much. It had a few good stories but I wasn't really into it. I decided to give the second season a chance and I thought it was great, start to finish.

    It’s the most misogynistic show ever made

    I feel like this is a really capitalist view of storytelling. I'm the kind of person who won't actually watch something until I've intentionally spoiled myself which might be part of the idea that people prefer to determine if a story is worth their time, but I definitely don't think what's discussed here should be spoken about so generally because there are a lot of ways that people enjoy media beyond just what is taught in media courses. It's a good video overall I just feel like it missed some of the nuance of why media is made and how people enjoy it, for example, people who prefer spoilers and find that enhances the experience.

      It’s a twenty minute internet video, it’s not a masterclass in business psychology. The vast majority of people are affected in approximately the way he describes, with most nuance being in their actual threshold for whether something is worth there time. If this shouldn’t be spoken about generally, nothing should be. That’s not very useful. Unless you actually have the degrees and experience Savage has, an extremely sophisticated and detailed analysis probably wouldn’t be nearly as effective at communicating the actual point he was making.
      As for capitalism... he was talking about marketing and anticipation, that is by necessity a market related discussion. The way something is advertised affects its reception regardless of whether you’re critical of capitalism or not. Ideology is a nonfactor.

    I watch them and usually just lament the waste of aesthetic and resources for stories so unsubstantial and pathetically reliant on vulgarisms and cheap gimmicks.
