Off Roading a 85 hp Rental Suzuki Jimny in Iceland Was Terrifying!

- I took a little break from working on the Zero To Awesome VW Super Beetle project and spent a few weeks camping around Iceland. I decided to rent a 4x4 Suzuki Jimny with a rooftop tent for the adventure. The Jimny was under powered, had bald tires and was terrifying to drive. In the end though "Suzie" saved my butt and helped me get out of a few tough situations.

Going way to fast over those crossings....
I kind of think if I went any slower I would still be there today floating down one of those rivers. Keep the bow wake going!
@@ZeroToAwesome You angle the path downstream till you hit the opposite side... Jimny is a good 4x4 but with that speed you could have easily sucked in water through the air intake.. but all went well and no damage done :)
Thanks for the tip! I tried to go downstream as much as possible, but a few times had to go straight across or even a little upstream to avoid deep parts of the river. I wouldn’t say “no damage”, a license plate did disappear. You are right though, very lucky no water made it into the air-box.
@@ZeroToAwesome Great video btw :) Really hope you had a good time here in the north atlantic :) 4x4 in Iceland is the best :D
Thank you! I really did have a great time and can’t wait to go back. Two weeks was not enough! Do you live there?
Man you got lucky with those crossings...could easily have gone wrong :O - cool video.
Nice video! Good to see you made it back. I'm the guy in the orange jacket with the green car hehe.
Is it really you? If so, I owe you a beer... or ten.
I’m not sure I would have done it....but I was laughing my ass off watching you make it...good idea to turn around.
Thanks! The more nervous I got the less I was explaining what was going on. The last big crossing where the water was up to the hood the little Suzuki was starting to float and bounce off the river bed. The relief driving out of there was incredible!
why is this guy red-lining it through every water crossing? just crawl through, it's less water resistance
Did you sleep on the expandable tent of your car? Was it then in designated camping places? thank you
Hi! I slept in the rooftop tent 7 of 10 nights. It was always at a campground so I had access to showers, etc.. the other nights I stayed at different hostels. This was spread out over the trip so I could do laundry and relax a bit.
What make is your pop up roof tent? It looks awesome!
It was a Roost. www.roosttents.com/roost_store.php Very light weight which was good for the little Suzuki, but for the price ($3K) there may be some better options out there.
Nice vid bro, Do u know the name of the hotspring?
I was trying to get to Reykjadalur. It is one of the natural hot springs that takes a little hiking to get to. There are 4x4 shuttle companies which will bus you up there. In hindsight that might have been a little better idea.
a Jimny won't get stuck... keep driving
It definitely didn’t get stuck. That little machine has some pep in it... also a lot of water. Lots of water in it.
The green car is a Volvo C202
Thanks! Good to know what my savior was driving.
The volvo laplander is man is @Henry the man cave camper his CZcams video's are super 😉
Did you use the roof tent? How was that? Greetings Ralf
Yep, camped for about two weeks around the island. It was fine until it rained then the thing absorbs water.
I'll be damned. Wouldn't have thought the Jim was capable of this. The water crashed against your front window but the engine didn't go dead? Apart from a strong current, the main danger are big rocks that can damage the undercarriage.
It surprised me as well, especially since the tires were nearly bald. Things must be sealed up well in that engine bay, and I was able to keep moving. I’m sure if I got stuck in the deep water I would have flooded the motor. I fell in love with that little Jimmy by the end of my trip. I would seriously consider one if they were sold stateside.
@@ZeroToAwesome l rented one now and waiting eagerly for the F-roads to open! You spurred me on.
Go for it! Maybe bring a buddy or a cone-along Incase you get really stuck. Hopefully you have better luck than I did. Have fun and safe travels!
You would not have flooded the motor as spark plugs are sealed and the only way was the air intake on the bonnet you flooded with water over and over crossing lol. also they body on chassis and non independent front & rear i have alloy skid plates on mine snorkel rock sliders so indestructible.
I can tell by your language use that you really like our water
Beautiful water, I wasn’t certain what the local translation is.
Jimny is too light, especially in stock form. You are lucky, I do have a Jimny and live north of Iceland.
I think the lightness saved me a little… definitely floated at times.
@@ZeroToAwesome good thing you didnt got swept away. Take care.
Nice vid but I could have done without the whistleing
Is nervous whistling a thing?
@@ZeroToAwesome Is that what is was?
